list users by a field !!

Editing profile page for users is very nice in vb. memberlist is useful for me but my need is to list them in some categories.
I dont want to list all of them. I want to list them in about 9 lists. I mean every user is in one group. and I need to have 9 list of users and when visitor clicks username it will show his/her profile page.
I dont know If I add a custom field for this 9 group can I list them in 9 page? or I have to make 9 usergroups and this will be possible to list them in 9 usergroups? or I have to make 9 ranks or ... ?
