Ok, so I have imported a new style and uploaded the image files to the correct location. I have checked the style vars and the paths are all correct. However, when I load the page the status icons are pulling from the standard vBulletin style instead of the custom. I have done a CTRL-F5 to force the refresh, but no joy. Any ideas??

It's a new install (files wise) of 3.7.1 PL2, upgrading my 3.6.* database. The css is configured to deliver as a file.
In the last post column you will see the standard icons

Just to update, I have now Clear all my firefox data. I have also copied the forum_old.gif icon from the custom set over the standard vBulletin icon, and guess what..... it still shows the standard one that no longer exists!! I'm lost, tired or just going crazy.....

Hmm looks like you didnt import the style correct.
When you import.. hope you created a NEW Style and not merged into the last one.. try importing another XML
Download/Import Styles >
Upload the XML file for Style..
Merge into Style: Make sure its selected as CREATE NEW STYLE
and No Parent Style (just for test).
If you are having a problem again with this procedure then try a diff. style from vb.org just to test..

I imported the style as a new style (no parent). Only issue was the style is for 3.7.0, not 3.7.1 but I don't think that will be an issue.
Maybe I will just use your Carbon theme, that quite nice too :)

Reimported the style xml for the sake of it, with same end result

Interestingly, your carbon fibre scheme is doing the same......

FIXED: It was this setting - "Show Default Post Icon" under thread display options
