2009-09-30 Update: This mod still works great as of vBulletin 3.8.3!

Since I just had to make the change myself and didn't see it posted here yet, I thought I would share a simple modification that was created by someone else a while back for an older vBulletin. I just tested it on my 3.7.0 site and assume it should continue to work for any 3.7.x build.

This change will add a slightly smaller version of the breadcrumb to an area just below the threads on showthread.php, and just below the forums on forumdisplay.php. See screenshots below for examples. Please only proceed if you're comfortable making manual template edits.

Instructions:

1. Locate the following in SHOWTHREAD template:

<if condition="$show['multiquote_global']">2. Add just above:
<!-- extra breadcrumb -->
<br /><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" border="0">
<tr valign="bottom">
<td><a href="#" onclick="history.back(1); return false;"><img src="$stylevar[imgdir_misc]/navbits_start.gif" alt="$vbphrase[go_back]" border="0" /></a></td>
<td>&nbsp;</td>
<td width="100%"><span class="navbar"><a href="$vboptions[forumhome].php$session[sessionurl_q]" accesskey="1">$vboptions[bbtitle]</a></span> $navbits[breadcrumb]</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td class="navbar" style="font-size:7pt; padding-top:1px" colspan="3"><if condition="$_SERVER['REQUEST_METHOD'] == 'POST'"><img class="inlineimg" src="$stylevar[imgdir_misc]/navbits_finallink_ltr.gif" alt="" border="0" /><else /><a href="$scriptpath"><img class="inlineimg" src="$stylevar[imgdir_misc]/navbits_finallink_ltr.gif" alt="$vbphrase[reload_this_page]" border="0" /></a></if> <strong>$navbits[lastelement]</strong></td>
</tr>
</table>&nbsp
<br />&nbsp
<!-- / extra breadcrumb -->3. Save SHOWTHREAD template and open FORUMDISPLAY template.

4. Locate the following in FORUMDISPLAY template:

<!-- / controls below thread list -->

</form>5. Add the following just below that code:

<!-- extra breadcrumb -->
<br /><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" border="0">
<tr valign="bottom">
<td><a href="#" onclick="history.back(1); return false;"><img src="$stylevar[imgdir_misc]/navbits_start.gif" alt="$vbphrase[go_back]" border="0" /></a></td>
<td>&nbsp;</td>
<td width="100%"><span class="navbar"><a href="$vboptions[forumhome].php$session[sessionurl_q]" accesskey="1">$vboptions[bbtitle]</a></span> $navbits[breadcrumb]</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td class="navbar" style="font-size:7pt; padding-top:1px" colspan="3"><if condition="$_SERVER['REQUEST_METHOD'] == 'POST'"><img class="inlineimg" src="$stylevar[imgdir_misc]/navbits_finallink_ltr.gif" alt="" border="0" /><else /><a href="$scriptpath"><img class="inlineimg" src="$stylevar[imgdir_misc]/navbits_finallink_ltr.gif" alt="$vbphrase[reload_this_page]" border="0" /></a></if> <strong>$navbits[lastelement]</strong></td>
</tr>
</table>&nbsp
<br />&nbsp
<!-- / extra breadcrumb -->Edited to add screenshots and fix navbits_finallink_ltr.gif

Reserved, just because reserving the first reply spot is all the rage.

This is great but I personally use this other code as my background is dark and this adds the same colour background as in the top breadcrumbs.

<!-- another breadcrumbs -->
<br />
<table class="normal" cellpadding="$stylevar[cellpadding]" cellspacing="$stylevar[cellspacing]" border="0" width="100%" align="center">
<tr>
<td class="alt1" width="100%"> <if condition="is_array($navbits)"> <table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" border="0"> <tr valign="bottom">
<td>
<a href="#" onclick="history.back(1); return false;"><img src="$stylevar[imgdir_misc]/navbits_start.gif" alt="$vbphrase[go_back]" border="0" /></a>
</td>
<td>
&nbsp;
</td>
<td width="100%"><span class="navbar"><a href="$vboptions[forumhome].php$session[sessionurl_q]" accesskey="1">$vboptions[bbtitle]</a></span> $navbits[breadcrumb]
</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td class="navbar" style="font-size:10pt; padding-top:1px" colspan="3"><if condition="$_SERVER['REQUEST_METHOD'] == 'POST'"><img class="inlineimg" src="$stylevar[imgdir_misc]/navbits_finallink.gif" alt="" border="0" /><else /><a href="$scriptpath"><img class="inlineimg" src="$stylevar[imgdir_misc]/navbits_finallink.gif" alt="$vbphrase[reload_this_page]" border="0" /></a></if><strong>$navbits[lastelement]</strong>
</td>
</tr>
</table>
<else /> <div class="navbar" style="font-size:10pt"><a href="$vboptions[forumhome].php$session[sessionurl_q]" accesskey="1"><img class="inlineimg" src="$stylevar[imgdir_misc]/navbits_start.gif" alt="" border="0" /></a> <strong>$vboptions[bbtitle]</strong>
</div></if>

I think the better way is

https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=125790&highlight=mini+navbar

I think the better way is

https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=125790&highlight=mini+navbar

works with 3.7.xSix of one. The fact that they created a product out of it is indeed "better". Beyond that, it's all down to individual design requirements, isn't it? This solution gives you a breadcrumb that resembles the a Junior version of main breadcrumb at the top and the other creates something different inside a box and without graphics. The designer in me objects to a box containing only one item, as is the case with randominity's solution, but again it's all down to what you want.

Also, this is probably totally irrelevant but randominity's use of the word "Navbar" in that product confuses me. Where's the navbar part? (Not to debase the discussion - I'm genuinely curious).

Edit: In any case, I have no real investment either way. Just dug up a not-so-old solution used by many before me and wanted to pass it on.

Feel free to add and adapt all you want! Even if I had come up with the concept/design myself, I would say go for it. The only reservation I might ever have would be if a different solution were to appear which would call for a new thread or something.

Clicks Installed! I like this one because the last one I used had the same bg color as the top link bar which was grey when my background was white. This is transparent and looks much better!
