[Sorky]

Purpose
This plugin allows extensive control of how SubForums are displayed.

Use any mix of between 0 and 10 columns
Different layouts can be used on specified forums
Change formatting
Display Thread/Post counts
Limit the number of SubForums shown (Show More/Less)
Collapse entire display
plus more!

Import XML file (as product): AdminCP > Plugin System > Manage Products > [Add/Import Product]

Hide or edit the SubForums: display
Add thread & post counts after SubForum names
Allow a DEFAULT layout of between unchanged, 0 or 1 to 5 columns
Allow INDIVIDUAL SubForums to be specifically set as unchanged, 0 or 1 to 5 columns

Tips
To get it on the Forum Home page, set the "vBulletin Options" > "Forum Listings Display Options" > "Depth of Forums - Forum Home" to "1".

For all other pages, set the "vBulletin Options" > "Forum Listings Display Options" > "Depth of Forums - Forum Display" to "1".

You should also set the "vBulletin Options" > "Forum Listings Display Options" > "Depth of Sub-Forums" to "1". Setting it higher will also work, however, beware that the grandchildren & indenting does not integrate well if using alphabetic sorting (use Forum Display Order sorting instead).

If the following templates have been modified from their original, either "revert" them or test this Mod carefully before use:

Version 1.1.0 Changes

1) Added ability for user to set the characters containing the thread and post counts

2) Added ability to alphabetically sort the SubForum list by row (horizontal) OR by column (vertical)

3) Added blank cell padding so that the entire grid is fully populated no matter how many elements so that coloured backgrounds look better

Please add the function to: apply a different depth of sub-forums to specific sub-forums.

You can specify a default for all forums AND you can specify individual forums to have specific settings that are different from the default.

Options are:

Leave as original (screen2.jpg)
Apply formatting only (screen3.jpg)
Put in 1 column
Put in 2 columns (screen4.jpg)
Put in 3 columns (screen8.jpg)
Put in 4 columns
Put in 5 columns


The "formatting" is the addition of the (thread/post) counts as well as the ability to style various aspects of the SubForum display.

For an example, please go to AdminCP -> vb options -> forum listing display options -> Depth of Forums - Forum Display

This function defines whether sub-forums below a certain depth are shown on forumdisplay.

And:
AdminCP -> vb options -> forum listing display options -> Depth of Sub-Forums

I have several forums where I would like to handle this different from the rest of my forums. It would be nice if you would add settings for this.

It is only designed for 1 at this stage, but if you enter more, the grandchildren, etc get listed also (no differentiation though) .

I would like to just display subforum Y, without listing its 50 subforums.

i only edit something in this section
its at bottom of the SubForum list Formatting
i leave everything blank. no comma or ( / ), and i choose Post/Thread counts display after SubForum name : dont show any count
Hide the count display if there are no threads in the SubForum: NO
also the back ground color.fonts..etc everything else blank

Your width seems very narrow... May also be a problem with non-english... Can you try turning all the formatting off and then do No change, Formatting Only, 1 column, then 2, etc (trying with a couple of short named Sub-Forums). PM me the screen-shots and I'll see what I can figure out.

Similar but most definitely not the same... You may note that I credit Cybernetec for the idea & inspiration. I tried his but the big problem for me was that it did ALL or NOTHING. I wanted some forums with 1 column, some with 2, some with 4 and others simply formatted. I offered my suggestions and even sent him adjustments to his to make it almost what I needed. As I received no response, I simply did it all myself. If you were to compare the code from both you would be hard pressed to find any similarities... In fact, his logic/methods and mine are very different.

I'll leave the functional comparison up to you... Whatever works for you is ok by me.

Make sure you select an option up the top (even if it is just "apply formatting") and then make sure the "Separator to use between SubForum" is cleared ;)

There's heap of options, give them a try, you can simply disable/uninstall if you're not happy with the results!

Is there any way to get this hack to follow the style? I've got quite a few different user selectable styles and it would be nice if the hack used the styles instead of the colors setup in the options.

You can remove the color definition from the options (I simply put that in as an example). You can of course then put in styles references instead ;-)

I had a similar behavior, which is why I added the "Use the full column width for the SubForum table" option. The fact that the vBulletin table did not have the 100% width setting, meant that the layout could vary. Turn this on and let me know if it helps. If not, PM me the URL so I can have a look at it live.

I've added indenting for Sub-SubForums ;) [NOTE : Sorting won't work well with Sub-SubForums, so if you want to sort, use the Forum Display Orders]

Can I change the font type of subforums?
There is quite a lot of space between each row. How can I remove that?

The SubForum List is displayed in a HTML Table with just the one element [I refer to it as the SubForum Outer Box (table) formatting]. Inside that is another HTML Table [I refer to it as the SubForum Table (table) formatting]. Each cell in that table contains a SubForum name that can have further formatting applied [I refer to it as the SubForum Element (td) formatting].

By working with the first two formatting options you can easily generate a display with or without grid lines with various degrees of spacing. The third formatting option lets you change the SubForum name display.

Enter the formatting here... (ie : Set a different font)

i'm using "sorting subforum as it is option" and in "2 colums" but it's showing side by side in order i wanna show them up to down in order and then continue in next colums..

I'm lost... I can only sort alphabetically, not on any "desired order" that is not somehow a value in the system

How about you take a screen shot of your site as it is, then how you want it to be and then I'll let you know the best way to do it

Simply changing the display order swaps them : Compare this to my previous post

Personally I don't see the point as "Display Order" does it - however, I will add that to the wishlist as "Leave as is (uses the forum display order) - Entered Vertically"

Works for me... You may have had the version for 3.6.x installed (ID = Sorky01) and then installed the version for 3.7.x (ID = Sorky02) or visa-versa... That could be why and is something I've seen.

If you can repeat this behavior, PM me your URL and I'll have a look at your system.

what I suggest is to make a link to the rest of subforums that are not displayed with the word "More..." so any one press "More..." on it, it will take him to the forum which has those subforums.

I'm having a little trouble getting the collapse functionality to work.

The hide/show icons simply perform the listen URL (which takes you to the top of the page) without collapsing the sub-forum display. I could be missing something really obvious in a general config setting sense as I haven't changed a great deal of the default settings.

It was working in the SubForums, but not on the hope page. Update fixes that.

First - You have edited my PlugIn, so it makes it almost impossible for me to debug as I cannot search for the places that my edits affected. If you want my assistance, you should NOT be editing the PlugIn.

Second - What version were you using before? 1.3.0, 1.3.1 or 1.4.0? I can compare changes, but the place bit that puts in the collapse icon hasn't really changed.

Third - I have tested on 3.6.8 and 3.7.2 without any problems. What changes have you made to your forum - they are the likely culprit - did you happen to install any other PlugIns?


From what I can tell, you may have changed your "forumhome_forumbit_levelX_YYpost" templates. As your forums seem to link to ".../audio-video-14/" instead of ".../forumdisplay.php?f=1 - that would probably be the reason.

Only possible thing I can suggest is to go to admincp - Plugins & Products - Plugin Manager edit "Sorky02 - SubForum List Control - parse_templates" : Change the "Execution Order" to 1 and see if that works.

No more help will be provided on an edited version of my PlugIn.

Actually with a color that is should not be there are all. I did take a look at posts #16,17,18 and it did not fix the issue. Here is an image of what I mean:

Have you checked the options? I put some values in by default so that it makes it a little more obvious what can be entered and what they do. Check these three ;)

After some changes on the templates i received a strange symbol string right from the sub categories. You can see it in the attachment.

No, I didn't put allowance for cookies... It will revert to the chosen state of open or collapsed - I'll add a "remember" state to the Wish List.

I have 3 level:

0 level - category
1 level - forum
2 level - subforum

the setting is:
Depth of Forums - Forum Home 2

it works fine in the index forum home as you can see:

You probably just need set the very last option (Other Formatting Options (Global) / Use the full column width for the SubForum table) to Yes.

If that doesn't help, PM me a link and I'll hapilly take a look.

I just checked your site with IE7 and FF3 and it was working perfectly. I presume you have disabled some other plug-in and all is fine ;)

The image only "shows" the URL - I cannot see from the image what happens when you click on it. Clicking on the img would actually call the function that shows/hides the table. The URL only executes if the function does not work.

As I said before... Your site works perfectly for IE7 & FF3...

i'm using maxthon and checked in firefox and IE7 too.

The URL you see is EXACTLY what I see. This is 100% correct. It SHOULD NOT execute as the script runs instead. Please CLICK when in IE or FF and see - I have gone to your site with both browser types and the URL displayed is as you showed (which is perfectly fine) as it does not execute - The collapse works perfectly on your site when I visit it.

Unfortunately, if I don't put a URL, the mouse will stay as an arrow, rather than changing to a hand when pointing to the collapse/grow image... This is something I want, so there MUST be a URL - I'm open to suggestions if you can think of something other than "#top" that won't break anything ;)

My categories aren't showing total # of posts and threads. Not sure what's going on.

Test Forum (category)
=> Category 1 (category)
==> Forum 1 (forum)

I now see what you meant... The Parent of the Category or the Forum ONLY shows the number of posts actually in the included Category/Forum. It does does not add the counts of the Sub-Forums of those.

I'll add an option to include Sub-SubForum counts in the total to the WishList

I have selected to show 2 columns and the table is not splitting the entire space in 2 but is saving a small space on the right side like is having another column or the subforum box is 70% out of the outer box table. Looks to me like you have both the 3.6.x version (Sorky01) and the 3.7.x version (Sorky02) installed

I just loaded 1.4.1 and them 1.5.1 went straight over it - no problems...

I know you'll have fixed it by simply removing the old one (after copying the settings), but if you can work out a reliable sequence that reproduces the problem, I'll be glad to check it out.

I can't (& would not) replace someone else Mod.

Not sure how they would interact (they should not both be needed) so you can simply disable the other Mod rather than removing it. That way you can try mine.

One more thing sorky, you may wanna upgrade that in Cyb Subforums, infront of each subforum, it shows in the brackets how many threads are there in the subforum along with number of posts in there like:

Forum A
--Subforum 1 (23/159)
--Subforum 2 (45/450)

so on and so forth.

At least I liked that a lot and would want this to happen in sorky 1.5 as well.

Back after a short intermission, I have managed to get some work done on this (thanks JakeS)... Seems that Project Tools does not have the Hook I'd like, so a template mod is the easiest solution to getting multiple columns working nicely. Simply replace the template with the contents of the attached file.

Could do more with this if by doing some minor work on the Project Tools add-on itself, but I'll need to raise that with the creator.

So here it is... On Cyb's demo site he has the column's arranged however to the right where it shows the most recent thread it shows multiple from the subforums... Is there something in the Vbulletin software that turns this on or is it another mod the works in conjunction with these forum managers... I will probibly upgrade to Sorky's mod as it seems to get more support...

CYB has done a great job producing many really great mods and I have only done mine because I couldn't get answers/improvements. I then modified it myself and sent him the update, still nothing. Then I simply decided to redo it all myself and share the benefits of my efforts in return for the inspiration ;)

I just noticed this mods breaks XHTML validation because it puts a table (block element) inside a span (inline element). The span is the show or hide span by the way.

Isn't it possible to use a div instead of a span?

Edit: did a quick test by editing the forumbit_display plugin and replaced the span by a div. Mod still works fine (for me anyway) and now validates.

You are absolutely correct - I fixed that in version 1.6.2 which is available for 3.8.x (as noted in this thread ;) )

You are absolutely correct - I fixed that in version 1.6.2 which is available for 3.8.x (as noted in this thread ;) )

No "Need", but there are lots of improvements. See the thread for 3.8.x and the "more details" posts for the low down.

Not hard to migrate...
No need to uninstall the existing one
Install the new one (will appear as Sorky03)
Set the options to match the existing one (you can check the existing one)
Disable the existing one (will appear as Sorky02)
Enable the new one
Remove the old one when you are ready
