View Full Version : [Release] Poll Hack v0.9

07-16-2000, 02:47 PM
Yep, here it is, the poll hack for vBulletin, tested on 1.1.2 and 1.1.3 Beta3.

The hack incorparates a poll as a thread starter, where users can vote and reply normally. You can view the test forum at http://www.naboonline.com/polltest/index.php

I hope the instructions are clear, any questions should go here.

Download the zip here! (http://www.naboonline.com/cgi-bin/load.cgi?http://www.naboonline.com/pollhack/pollv09.zip)

Enjoy!

Hi Doron,
I think you?ve done a great job. Really, you rock!

Here are my comments:
I downloaded your zip-file and tried to install the poll (on a totally new and clean forum, ver 1.1.3), check it out under http://www.abflussfrei.com/forum
Ok, there are a few minor bugs in your scripts:

The file options.php has an error in line 595:
your script says:
<td ALIGN="LEFT"><B>Poll Hack Options</B></td>
the correct script is:
<td ALIGN=\"LEFT\"><B>Poll Hack Options</B></td>
otherwise anything won?t work.

Then the images: you included the poll.gif. The button "Post new Poll" instead of "Post New Thread" is missing, at least I think so ;)

The correct directory name of the icons-directory is
images/icons/ not images/icon/ as you write in your poll_notes.txt.

That?s all. Your documentation worked perfectly, and with a little bit of PHP-experience it was no problem to install the poll.
The only problem is: The poll doesn?t show!!
I don?t know why.
When I post a new poll and click on the "Preview"-Button, everything seems to be fine. When I click on the "Submit"-Button, the poll has gone.

Check it out for yourself under http://www.abflussfrei.com/forum
I changed the settings for normal & unregistered users to be able to post polls.

Waiting for your answer,
bye
Michael

07-16-2000, 07:59 PM
did you add to the step 4?

4. In the postbit template, look for

$posticon <smallfont><B>$postitle</b></smallfont>
<p><normalfont>$message</normalfont></p>

change it with:

$posticon <smallfont><B>$postitle</b></smallfont>
<p><normalfont>$message<BR><BR>$pollbit</normalfont></p>

image - there is none I am afraid, need Menno to do one...

new zip with the fix to that small bug in options.php

07-16-2000, 08:05 PM
Hmmm, weird. I´m sure I changed the postbit-template.
I did it again and now it works. Perfect!

bye,
Michael

Dose voting on a poll send it to the top of the list? Or do you need to reply in the post to send the poll topic to the top?

you can toggle it in the control panel, but yes, that feature is in.

07-17-2000, 09:46 AM
Just installed this on beta3. Works like a charm so far!

Thanks for the great hack.

07-17-2000, 01:57 PM
How about if the user does not want to submit a poll, and just wants to submit a normal message?

I tried it and it said it needed a topic and at least 2 options.

--WildWayz

07-17-2000, 02:03 PM
cool... all i need now is to upgrade to beta 3...

The Post New Post icon should not(!!) be replaced, but rather add after it the code with the Post New Poll image for your forum (you need to create it yourself)

07-17-2000, 04:18 PM
I have one little snag - when I try to change my usergroups to "allow polls" and then submit, it still goes back to "no". It's like it won't let me change that field from "no" but will allow me to change any other field.

Any ideas?

07-17-2000, 04:56 PM
wierd, it works on my 1.1.3b3 and my test 1.1.2 board. Can the usergroups post polls though?

07-17-2000, 05:14 PM
I tried re-coding the usergroups file and I'm not sure what I did differently, but it seemed to work for the registered users, but not for the admin usergroup.

Suggestion: maybe for future versions, instead of using an entire "replace" field for the long strings, you can tell us what to "add" instead. Ed has us "replacing" for his PM hack, and then this tells us to "replace" to - but the two conflicted so I lost something.

Excellent feature though, I love it - now if I could just get the admin (me) to be able to create poll posts!

[Edited by Me2Be on 07-17-2000 at 02:16 PM]

07-17-2000, 06:01 PM
you can edit manually the sql tables, look for your usergroup and set canpostpoll to 1.

but highly wierd

07-17-2000, 06:07 PM
Same thing with super-mods - can't post polls.

Has anyone else got this working that is using the PM hack or is it just me?

[Edited by Me2Be on 07-17-2000 at 03:07 PM]

07-17-2000, 06:12 PM
Hi,
look at http://www.abflussfrei.com/forum/ (it?s my playground..)
Everything?s ok there in Germany ;)
Did you run the makeprivtables.php from the pm-hack and the makepolltables.php from the poll-hack?

bye,
Michael

07-17-2000, 06:17 PM
Hi Michael,

Sure did. The PMs are working fine, and with regard to the polls, only registered users are able to post polls even though now I have told admins, super mods and registered users should have priviledges to post polls.

(Where in Germany?)

07-17-2000, 06:29 PM
did you set the "number of posts for polls" to 0? maybe that fixes it

07-17-2000, 06:45 PM
I'm going to try a fresh install without the PM hack (gotta love having a test board) to see what happens. Be right back!

07-17-2000, 06:54 PM
@Me2Be:
Bavaria, in a city near to munich..
cu,
mm

07-17-2000, 07:16 PM
I did a brand new install without any hacks added, and it works perfectly now. I'm going to try and re-install the PM hack and see if I encounter any problems on there. Thanks Doron, I love this hack!

Michael, how far is that from Kaiserslautern? (My husband went to high school there)

07-17-2000, 07:25 PM
wierd, i got it running with the pm hack.

07-17-2000, 07:34 PM
@Me2Be:
well, it´s 373 km from where I live. I´ve never been there.

bye,
Michael

07-17-2000, 08:54 PM
And what's even more strange is that I reinstalled the PM hack after I installed the polls and everything is working perfect now.

Maybe it was in a tempermental mood or something ;)

07-18-2000, 12:53 PM
I have found that when someone who is not logged in comes along and votes in a poll it says Invalid Username - I think it should take them to the login screen thing. I'm having to delay the rollout of the polls on my forums because of this.

07-18-2000, 03:02 PM
No matter I've added a login box to forumdisplay

07-18-2000, 06:14 PM
hmm, it should ask them to log in, must be a error. thanks for catching it.

07-19-2000, 11:20 AM
Can my anybody help?
I have Install the hack. In the "normal" forum, working the hack Perfect! But I have 3 foren with a own Template. In the, are no Poll. I have making the Step 4 but here is only a "Post New Thread". No poll.
Have I forgot a step or?????
Thank you!
Bye
Tho

07-19-2000, 01:59 PM
you need to add $pollbit to where in the other templates oyu want the polls to show.

07-19-2000, 10:06 PM
hi doron... the poll hack is looking great :D ... i want to install it now and was wondering if the zip file you have above is the latest ? what do i need to install it ?

07-20-2000, 06:42 AM
the zip is the latest, there is a notes.txt which tells you what to do.

It's been isntalled on 1.1.2 and 1.1.3b3

07-20-2000, 08:32 AM
YOU DA MAN!

07-20-2000, 01:34 PM
I'm not sure whether this is related to this hack or not. Im running 1.1.3 beta 3 with the latest version of the PM hack installed. I have just added this poll hack and had followed the step by step instructions precisely to the stage where i had successfully posted a test poll, which worked perfectly. I could view the test poll and vote on it without a problem

at this point i decided to switch my VB back on. However, after submitting the options I ended up getting a parse error:

Parse error: parse error, expecting `STRING' or `'{'' or `'$'' in global.php on line 57

which corresponds to
// ###################### Start dovars #######################

If I try to visit the forum I receive a slightly different parse error:
Parse error: parse error, expecting `STRING' or `'{'' or `'$'' in global.php on line 52
corresponding to:
eval($optionstemp[template]);

I've got no idea why this has suddenly happened, especially as global.php isnt altered by the poll?

Does anyone know what I could do to fix this problem?

TIA

Hi Doron,

I added your poll and now everything is running smoothly. However, I do have a couple of remarks:

1) I do not use icons; therefore, I kept getting a mysql error. I solved this eventually by changing "iconid=$iconid"; in poll.php to "iconid=0;".

2) I would like to have a regular prefix to poll threads in their title, something like "[Poll]:" - any idea how I can do that?

3) I think that somewhere on the forumdisplay, next to the poll-thread title or even under "replies" it should have the total number of voters so far. Any idea how I can add that?

Thanks for a great hack!

Toda :)

yeah, that's the best way

2) I would like to have a regular prefix to poll threads in their title, something like "[Poll]:" - any idea how I can do that?

showthread.php, line 69
look for
$threadtitle=htmlspecialchars($threadinfo[title]);
change it to:
$threadtitle='Poll: ' . htmlspecialchars($threadinfo[title]);

That will add a Poll: infront of each poll.

3) I think that somewhere on the forumdisplay, next to the poll-thread title or even under "replies" it should have the total number of voters so far. Any idea how I can add that?

that's planned for the next version ;)

07-20-2000, 09:41 PM
Doron,

Changing that line 69 in showthread.php will put a "Poll:" prefix ahead of ALL threads, not just the poll ones, no???

07-20-2000, 10:11 PM
Doron,

You have a small bug - in the template pollresults, the link back to the forum is forumshow.php?forumid=$forumid whereas it should be forumdisplay.php etc. :)

07-20-2000, 10:18 PM
One more impeding wish, Doron:

Can you please add to the user permissions (as opposed to usergroup permissions) a "can post new polls - yes/no" option? This way, if someone abuses this option, I can simply bar him personally from posting polls.

Thanks,

Bira

07-20-2000, 11:23 PM
Doron, in the vote options (the options you vote for) it adds a slash ahead of an apostrophe, like "It\'s" :(

07-21-2000, 07:17 AM
hm... if you use addslashes() in the right way, there shouldn't be a problem.

Unless magic_quotes is activated in your php.ini file.

Magic_quotes is on (1?), but that doesn't cause any slashes to appear in the posts. I've only got this problem in the poll options.

Wierd I don't get that on the test board. Could you show me the poll that is doing that? http://www.naboonline.com/polltest/showthread.php?threadid=34

I tested it, seems to work. It adds the slashes to them, but should not show em when viewing.

As for the Poll: code, add after the line (in showthread.php)
if ($pollquery[pollid] <> 0) { //post has a poll

add this:

$threadtitle='Poll: ' . $threadtitle;

that will add a Poll: only if it is a poll

Ok, i uploaded the new zip with the fix for the forumshow (what a stupid mistake). The reason is that I had poll.php and pollshow.php at one time.

As for the user "pollvote", I think what I will do is a "pollban" field where you enter there userid's. that's for 1.0, in say about a month's time?

[Edited by doron on 07-21-2000 at 01:12 PM]

07-22-2000, 12:17 AM
Doron, here - I made a sample for you: http://www.atlasf1.com/bb/showthread.php?threadid=7213

Please note that this is the only place where we have this slashes problem :(

Thanks for the "Poll" prefix - however it's not much help if it only shows on the actual thread itself. If you're there, you can see that it's a poll, heh. I wanted a prefix to the title on the forumdisplay page.

And also thanks for adding the userban :)

07-22-2000, 06:48 PM
very wierd, I can't dupe it. Are you using php 4 perhaps?

07-22-2000, 09:45 PM
could you check if the slashes are existent in the db? They should not be. That is the only way to explain this.

07-23-2000, 01:09 AM
doron, I'm using php3 and the slashes exist in the database.

07-23-2000, 06:36 AM
$DB_site->query("INSERT INTO poll (pollid,options,question) VALUES (NULL,'".addslashes($polloptionsstring)."','".addslashes($question)."')");

It addes the slashes to $polloptinsstring, but when it gets added into the db, they should be stripped by the db itself. Sounds like a php error not removing the /'s.

07-23-2000, 03:46 PM
ok, new zip is on the server with a postpoll graphic from menno.

07-23-2000, 04:13 PM
doron, so what are you saying? That's it's not fixable? :(

07-23-2000, 09:21 PM
what I am saying is that I really have no idea how that can be. I'm looking into this, but my guess is that

a) This is some wierd php bug with your system
b) you copied the hack somehow wrongly (even though i do not see how).

Do you get this when a poll is not closed as well? What about if you edit that poll - do you get the '/' also in those textfields?

07-24-2000, 01:50 AM
Doron, I get those slashes in every situation, including on edit - even if I remove them and click submit.

The only way I can get rid of them is if I remove them via phpmyadmin - i.e. directy at the mysql table.

I checked that I copied the code correctly - no problem there.

What boggles me is the fact that I don't get slashes anywhere else than in the poll options.

07-24-2000, 03:25 AM
doron - you probably missed a stripslashes() somewhere. I haven't looked at the code yet, so I don't know where :)

07-24-2000, 04:26 AM
duh, i missed them somehow. Funnily, even without em, it works on my testboard.

Bira, look in poll.php for:

$optionQuestion = bbcodeparse($splitoptions[$run],$forumid,$foruminfo[allowsmilie]);

replace with:

$optionQuestion = bbcodeparse(stripslashes($splitoptions[$run]),$forumid,$foruminfo[allowsmilie]);

that should fix it except for the editing.

07-24-2000, 08:29 PM
ummm, no, slashes still appear there and on new polls added after the change. You sure there shouldn't be a stripslashes() also somewhere else in the code?

07-24-2000, 08:31 PM
ah, found it.

Doron, the same change should be made in showthread.php :)

Thanks to you and to Ed :)

07-26-2000, 03:56 AM
duh, showthread, showthread. Sorry, I wrote that in a hurry, forgot that.

07-28-2000, 08:52 AM
Doron, I just installed this and I want to say thanx:)

The only thing I would change (not including your future additions) is the setting default to "can't". OMG what a pain when you have a lot of usergroups and mods!

Great hack, though!

07-28-2000, 11:33 AM
Can someone please add bar graphs to it?

08-04-2000, 03:49 PM
so anything new happening with the poll hack ? i am finally ready to try it  be afraid to do so before :(

08-04-2000, 04:59 PM
just being picky :) i thought'd i add if not already states that in newpoll template you need to edit the smilies and vbcode links to point your own forums :)

Thanks to you and to Ed :) i installed the polls on my test forum and added the 2 lines Ed said in the poll.php and showthread.php

now when i post a poll with a ' in it

i.e. don't it comes up => don't which is fine

but hit the edit link, and do nothing but submit again...

the don't now comes up as don\'t

and if i do another edit and submit it ends up show as

don\\\'t

08-05-2000, 07:22 PM
I finally installed the Poll hack and everything went perfect. I just modified it so that a user can't enter a message along with the poll, put in their signature, or put in a topic subject. I feel all of that is not needed in the poll post. Thank Doron.

look for the same lines in editpost.php. I'll get the exact code latter and post the changes.

the next version will have graphical stuff in it. Hopefully it will be done next month

08-07-2000, 07:42 PM
thanks doron... your poll will be a great addition to my anime forum :D ...after that it will be to get a more on my prequels forum :D

08-07-2000, 08:05 PM
Doron : Problem..

User who have "Store username and password" set to "NO" can't vote because they aren't asked for their username/password so they always get "Invalid username/password" message".

Gonna make a fix? I guess you need to throw in a form in the middle that asks for their username/password before sending it on to the verifiyusername function.

[Edited by rangersfan on 08-07-2000 at 05:06 PM]

08-08-2000, 02:00 PM
ah yes i forgot not everyone sets save username and passwords...

08-08-2000, 05:22 PM
i have a fix for that, gotta test it better. The basic idea is to have a login form in the poll template if the user is not logged in.

08-08-2000, 05:29 PM
Yes that would be a good way to do as all the variables would then be passed on.

08-10-2000, 09:11 PM

Insert whatever identifier you want. This will make all NEW polls have that in front of them in their title. Your old polls will still show the same title as before. This is the much easier way of doing it. You have to edit several files, (forumdisplay, showthread, search.php) just to name some if you want to check every post for a poll and then add "POLL" if it is one. Saving it as part of the title is the way to do it. You can even insert html into there to make it stand out more. [/B]

Hi Rangersfan,

Thanks for the help and advice. I have two questions though:

1) Right now, in poll.php lines 146-7 I have:

$subject=censortext($subject);
$message=censortext($message);

Your instructions are a bit confusing. Do you intend me to add a line, inbetween the above two lines, without a semicolon at the end??

2) What do you mean I can use HTML? How?

Thanks for your help mate - I appreciate it.

Cheers,

Bira

08-10-2000, 09:55 PM
Well yes you need to put the semi-colon :) and the line can go in the middle or after both lines, it doesn't matter. As for the HTML, scratch that idea as the code will make that line into a Link later on and it wouldn't work.

08-10-2000, 09:58 PM
thanks Rangersfan :)

08-24-2000, 09:31 PM
Doron - request

Can you make it so that if I edit a poll (as Admin) I can have some blank fields to add options to?

08-30-2000, 03:59 AM
I've got the hack installed, but it keeps telling me that it is having a problem accessing the database...the rest of the forum works fine though - any idea whats wrong?

08-30-2000, 03:40 PM
TWTCommish - could you post the url or the exact error?

My apologies for being so vague...I figured it all out, however. KILLER hack!!! The instructions were a bit tricky to follow, but the hack itself is awesome.

Hello,

On my forums at http://forums.paintballcity.com the poll.php script runs sooooo slow and eats up MySQL.

Any way to fix this?

Could you show an example poll for this? Is it during poll creation or during the view of a poll or on an edit?

09-07-2000, 04:53 PM
Edit seems to be the longest.

Welll I actually took the poll links off my site so that people did not try and post polls.

09-07-2000, 05:24 PM
Without wading through all 6 pages of this post, where can I find the most recent, complete version with all the bugfixes worked into it? Or is there not one?

I hope vBhackers.org will be different than UBBhackers in that it has each totally working hack setup proprietarily, instead of linking to the thread.

Nobody knows a answer?

09-08-2000, 05:38 PM
could you show the url please?

As for the poll hack with all working bug fixies, it will come out very soon. Those comments about poll.php being slow scare me and I'm going through the code again to see if I can optimise it.

A full release (0.9.2) will comeout hopefully next week.

You have to talk to your host about giving you "alter" permissions. Nothing we can do about that.

Ed Sullivan..

Is this answer for me ?

yep, the error means, you may not use the alter command...which is bad, very for upgrading. You better contact your host and request alter privlidges.

Ed Sullivan ,doron

Is "alter command" needed for PM also ?

If so . i don't know what is it . what i have to tell my host ?

Thanks

alter is needed for any upgrade or hack.

What host are you using? Tell them that you need ALTER privlidges for your mysql databases.

10-29-2000, 05:13 PM
No doren...

The site support mysql and php3 and ssi ...

And i ask them to install vB for me first time and they do and charge me . But to day whin i ask thim about "alter " thay told me that we cant do it cos it is not fault and every thing work well , i am sure thay said like this cos thay dont know how to do it . And i told them you can charge me any thing you want but thay said NO.

So do you know any company or person can move my vB to new server if i get one ? and wich the BEST host in your opanion ?

Um, best ask in the hosting forum for that ;)

Hi Doron,

Thanks for a nice and stable hack, the instructions worked fine for me.

Just one important thing, though... Users who have not stored their Username/Password in the browser can't vote, they will forever get the "Invalid Username" error.

This needs an instant fix as many users don't select that option at all, particularly those accessing forums from Inernet cafes and other public places.

This is fixed in the 1.0.1 version, which will _hopefully_ be released this week. I have to test the upgrade script before I release the code. You might want to wait for it.

Hi Doron,

Thanks for the reply. I will wait for the next release and do take extra time for the testing.

Btw, may I suggest the following in the documentation?
1. Warning to users who have installed other hacks, so as not to overwrite other parameters especially in the options.php, user.php usergroup.php stuff

That's all.
