If you want much more functionality than a forum portal gives, consider giving vBdrupal a try (http://www.vbdrupal.org/). I've used it on three sites now, and I love it. The only downside is the learning curve with Drupal. The effort is worth the reward, though!

I use vBAdvanced: http://www.sevenstring.org/ (guest/guest for login)

They all do look the same though. menu column | content column | stats column.

Really a portal is a portal unfortunately unless you crank out something on your own.

Thank you. I heavily modified the vBdrupal frontpage, so I don't know that you want to take that as a typical look you'll get when installing it. No matter what software you use, the default layout and style tends to be quite generic, so you'll have to put in some work to make it look unique (or hire someone).

Oh, and vBdrupal is completely free.

Agreed. Some folks have done a lot to give vBadvanced and vBportal a fairly unique look but, to me, that always seemed to be more trouble than it was worth for the functionality you get in return. No matter what you do, those portals are tied to vBulletin, and can do little to nothing on their own.

Of course, that's all some people want: just a simple frontpage to sum up their forums, and there isn't anything wrong with that. It's just that I see a lot of people with these vB-based portals installed, yet wanting more functionality out of them than they can deliver.

We have used vbadvanced for a while but have huge problems since upgrade to 3.7, can't edit or see any content of the modules in admin cp. We are looking into other options now as the support at vbadvanced in not quickly forthcoming.

I strongly recommend vbdrupal because it comes with power of drupal (blogs, etc).... and its open source as well. so completely free (no link in footer needed either)
