There should be a News Feed in the profile or forum homepage that gives you information about what your Friends have done lately (such as join a Social Group, added a friend, posted a thread, added a picture in their album, etc.). It's similar to how Facebook and other social network sites have it. Currently, there is no way of knowing what your Friends have done without clicking on each individual profile.
If this is being worked on, or if there is a mod out there that generates news feeds for this, please let me know! :)
