What this does: vB Spell allows you to install a dictionary (English dictionary included) into your MysQL database, and provide a spell checking window that works in both of vB's editor modes, standard and WYSIWYG.

Background: This mod was originally developed by tamarian for vB 3.5.x. With the release of 3.6.x the installer stopped working for fresh installs and the template changes were considerably out of date, tamarian gave cynix2 permission to release a 3.6.x version with updates. I have now carried it over to 3.7.x and will support it to the best of my ability.
This version should work with 3.5.x, 3.6.x, and 3.7.x series.

Features:
Supports most recent versions of browsers. Firefox, Mozilla/Netsacpe, Opera and Konqueror (Konqueror implies Safari, but please confirm Mac folks). Currently does NOT work in IE 7, if anybody can look through the code and know of a way to fix the mod to work in IE, then please send me a pm.
Learn Feature uses cookies, so it won't increase the database size.
Admin panel options.
Spell Check button appears anywhere there is a WYSIWYG Enhanced or Standard Editor Toolbar [includes quickreply but not quickedit].
Skips quoted text and other tags (PHP, code, etc.).
Usergroup permisisons.
Template based interface, and uses your default style.
Link buttons (Thesarus and Lookup) with links to Merriam Webster's online thesarus and dictionary links with the suggestion for misspelled words.Installation:
Unzip main package.
Upload the contents of the 'upload' folder to your forum home directory.
Regular Install:
Unzip Dictionary.zip.
Upload DICTIONARY.DIC to your forum home directory.Alternate Install
Unzip Manual-SQL.zip or Split-SQL.zip.
Import the SQL files to your database.
Import product-vbspell37.xml.
Go to AdminCP > vBulletin Options > vB Spell and edit your usergroup permisisons.
Template changes are now automatic. [need tms (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=152931)]Q: What is the Alternate Install method for?
A: If you are having problems with the Regular Install (such as your dictionary import freezes at x%) then you should consider using the Alternate Install. If neither of these methods work for you then there might be an issue with your server host.

Upgrading:
Unzip main package.
Upload the contents of the 'upload' folder to your forum home directory.
Import product-vbspell37.xml.To make template editing less tedious i have made use of Andreas (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/member.php?u=47102) Template Modification System found here (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=152931). If you install tms before applying this mod, all template edits will be done for you. If you do not want tms installed, then i have supplied easier to understand template editing instructions inside the mod zip file.

IMPORTANT: If you decide to use tms and have the templates be automatically installed, then you need to go into your styles and save the following templates.

editpost, newreply, newthread, album_pictureview, calendar_edit, visitormessage_editor, socialgroups_editor, USERCP_SHELL, SHOWTHREAD, postbit_quickedit, pm_newpm, picturecomment_form, and modifysignature

Just go into the templates and save it without making any changes for each skin. TMS will not edit any unmodified templates, so if any of them templates are already red, then they are already modified and you don't need to save them.

HISTORY:
1.1 - Added use of TMS to make template modification easier.
1.2 - Added tehtide (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/member.php?u=233762)'s fix from here (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=1546615&postcount=31)
1.3 - Made some changes in the product, and made manual template instructions a little less tedious, but there is no easy way of doing it unfortunantly. You will need to redo the template edits that go above </head>.

No need to upgrade if you have the old version installed as nothing major has changed, but i do plan on making some changes to this as the 3.6 version is no longer supported, so my advice is to install this one, and then when i release a update, you will have the choice to move to this one if you'd like.

tesing on my 3.7.0G....

Do I have to manually edit all the post and edit pages templates to make this work?

Otherwise it doesnt seem to be working using the xml install only.

Thanks in advance, and imo a great mod, beats ispell if I can get it to work on my code.

Yes, you do need to do the template edits, otherwise nothing will call for the vbspell window. I am gonna try to make the template changes more automatic if i can, but for now it's manual editing. Sry

Your instructions say to edit the "postbit_quickedit" template and look for </head>. I do not have this in my "postbit_quickedit" template. it also says to look for "$navbar". This is not in there either.

In fact, the only thing you are telling me to find that is actually in that template is the first step when has me looking for

<if condition="is_browser('ie')">
<td><img src="$stylevar[imgdir_editor]/separator.gif" width="6" height="20" alt="" /></td>
<td><div class="imagebutton" id="{$editorid}_cmd_spelling"><img src="$stylevar[imgdir_editor]/spelling.gif" width="21" height="20" alt="$vbphrase[check_spelling]" /></div></td>
</if>

Well, it turns out that I was reading the instructions int he included text file and they are totally wrong. In addition, these instructions are convoluted at best and this hack does not work at all.

I need a simpler spellchecking solution.

I need a simpler spellchecking solution.

For quick edit in postbit_quickedit, use this for step C (A and B are in showthread):

Do you read where change A and B are in showthread, the only change in postbit_quickedit is adding the button. Go in postbit_quickedit and search for preview or go_advanced and place the button code under that line.

The instructions work fine, it's just how it's read that may be more difficult for some people. I gotta change the button code instructions as copying and pasting the whole line won't give any results. Just search for preview, go_advanced, or save and then put the button code under that line.

Not true. Your instructions in the first post make 2 references to this template. One at the beginning of the instructions and another at the end. The text file that you provided actually detail more edits to this template.

The instructions work fine, it's just how it's read that may be more difficult for some people.
Well, the text file instructions that you provide are horrible beyond belief. The ones in the post are easier to read, but still need alot of help.

You need tms (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=152931) installed first in order for the template edits to be done for you. Then need to save all the templates that are gonna be edited beforehand cause tms will not modify unmodified templates. >8( So it's not without tedious work, but its alot easier to just go in the templates and save them, than manually editing the templates yourself.

Hi,

I've installed this with manual template edits as I didn't want to install TMS but cannot get it to find vbspell.php.

The popup works on Firefox but not on IE and the error FF is giving is:

"The requested URL /vbspell.php was not found on this server."

This is the code added to the Editpost template:

<form name="spell_form" id="spell_form" method="POST" target="spellWindow" action="vbspell.php">
<input type="hidden" name="spell_formname" value="">
<input type="hidden" name="spell_fieldname" value="">
<input type="hidden" name="spellstring" value="">
</form>

I've tried inserting /forums/vbspell.php and http://www.mysite.com/forums/vbspell.php - neither of which work. All three files are in my /forums directory along with the Dictionary file.

Any idea why this isn't finding the file please?

Thank you for pointing this out to me, and since i don't use IE, i didn't see the problem beforehand, in which i SHOULD of checked in ie too. Does that mod make use of tms? It could be due to the spell checker overwritten template edits of that mod, but i can't be sure. What you can do is remove the auto-template changes for the templates that are giving you this problem, and then manually edit the templates. Does it happen on forumhome, or like when your seeing a thread?

No it don't, only under message editors, it could be done though with he approproiate editing, you'd have to add the buttons under the input boxes. and the </head> and $navbar change. It would be pretty tedious though to do it for every template though.

There is a bug with this hack.

When enabled, certain functions do not work. One I just noticed is that when you click a checkbox on a post, it should by default highlight it, and on the bottom right side of the drop down menu (moderator options) the Go button should change the number from (0) to (1) for example.

Your mod conflicts and voids this functionality. As soon as I uninstalled it, the original functions worked again.

It has been awhile since I have done manual imports on MYSql but not that long. This isn't wanting to import even using the small chunks.

An error occurred while attempting to execute your query. The following information was returned.
error number: 1064
error desc: You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near ';
CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS `vbspell` (
`word` varchar(30) collate latin1_g' at line 1

I have tried importing the entire file using the file. I tried copy/paste directly into the query into phpMyadmin and I used the chunks of code where you broke it down with all methods to include the default in vBulletins "Execute SQL Query" and I get the same errors.

I think that this spell check system is increase the server's load when the dictionary file is big. :(

With english dictionary it works fine.
I try to re-install it with a greek dictionary* (7mb - when I import it to db the table was 14mb)...
The system accepts the dictionary and works ok on spelling BUT it want a lot of time and cpu usage to spelling!
eg, for 1 word needs 35sec (!!!) - for 15 lines of text needs 220+ seconds (!!! ) and the cpu usage on those secs was 90-100% (I run mysql and apache on my PC for tests).

Is there any way to fix this problem?
why it is so server intensive with this dic? :(

*i think that the dictionary file is ok... it is a text file with a lot of words, one below the other, without spaces (also, the words recognized ok from the vbspell on "suggestions" etc )

Thanks!!

Sorry for my bad english, :o

I've run into a error, at least, in IE. The Spell Checker doesn't open and I get a 'spell_formname' is null or not an object error message in Quick Reply and in New Reply and 'document.forms[...].message' is null or not an object error message in the Visitor Reply form. Is this as simple as just having done the template edits wrong?

bairy

I get the same error in IE7. I'm gonna see if I can work it out.

Edit: Had a quick look. It seems that this line:
h_spellform.spell_formname.value = formName;

confuses IE. It works in Firefox but IE7 doesn't recognise "spell_formname" as part of the form object.

I'm afraid someone with more knowledge of javascript OO will have to have a look.

Also Replicators I found a bug, don't know if it's just my board. Within a thread if you click edit on any of the posts then the spell check button, it will check the text in the quickreply at the bottom. I'm guessing there's a mix up over the id of the textarea it should be reading.

I actually like editing templates manually - It makes me feel like I'm actually doing something LOL - But I tell ya - these template edit instructions for vBSpell is one of the tedious set of instructions I've EVER seen... It'd be nice for you to at least order the instructions so that you're not coming back 3 or 4 times to edit the same template... Also may want to make clear that in some templates you will be making the same edit anywhere from 1 - 4 times LOL

At anyrate - Thanx very much for the sharing REPLICATORS. It would be wonderful to have spell check especially for a Forum like JPiC which specializes in the sharing of literature & poetry. I have an issue though - It's odd really - I've done the template edits - followed the instructions to the letter = none of the Spell Check buttons work when clicked.

Suggestions & Support appreciated :)

Your instructions are pretty off or not clear.

Example

Find the following Text in Template socialgroups_editor
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
<input type="submit" class="button" name="preview" value="$vbphrase[preview]" accesskey="r" tabindex="1" />
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Below that, insert the following Text
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
<input type="button" class="button" value="Spell Check" onClick="spellCheck('vbform', '$editorid', '2');" />
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are 4 results for that line to replace, Same for the rest of the template edits after this one. So which one of the 4 do we insert this under?

Well if you can help in any way to make this mod work in IE, then please do so as i will need the help, i edited the mod to work for me which it does, later did i find out it didn't work in IE. I don't use IE, so it would be a easy overpass, and all that needs is some line changed, but i wouldn't know which, this was just carried over from 3.6 and i made some modifications for it to work in 3.7. I have asked people that if they know of ways to make this mod better, then tell me. It's a free mod, so you have the choice to install it or not, not like you had to pay anything o0

Why in god's name would you make a spell checker that only works for Firefox when Firefox has a built in spell check?!

Also, I installed this exactly as describe and even in Firefox it doesn't offer any suggestions.

Coming from a one post wonder. Its a free mod, he worked on it for FREE. You know what you need to work on? Your attitude, your manners. Change it, or else do not come here with your whining. No one is obligated to heed to your demands and selfishness.

And to the mod author, your work is appreciated nonetheless. Although I uninstalled it due to the IE issue, I'm not a coder so I cannot help you. Perhaps someone from dynamicdrive.com might know?

Supports most recent versions of browsers. Tested on IE,

Why would you say that? You even admit it yourself, you hadn't tested it in IE. Did you test it in any other browser? Has anyone ever gotten this working in IE? Does anyone else even get suggestions to their misspelled words, even as simple as "tesst"...

I took "Tested in IE" to mean "Tested in IE" my mistake.

No need for the disrespect, obviously that line was copied from a earlier version of this mod, and obviously it was tested and did work, for IE 6! IE 7 does things differently though which ruins most html and php scripts which is why i recommend everyone to use firefox or netscape as IE 7 is crap.

You know they stopped support of Netscape recently. They're sending everyone over to a browser called Flock. A browser name that inspired about a dozen obvious puns seconds after reading it.

What about Safari? I tried this mod in Apple's Safari, which is the majority browser on the Mac platform and a strong third now on the Windows platform. It didn't work.

Everything was installed properly, including the tms template system. The spell check icon shows up, but when you click it, it does -- nothing!

So where do we go from here?

Peace,

The original still works fine for me so I'll just stick with that but I would like to know how I could get the spell check to show up in the quick reply box? I tried the edits from this mod but it didn't seem to fly.

Any ideas?????

Could this be made with AJAX?

So the users don't have to click the check-button and get warnings/correction suggestions while they type.

Will someone update this for 3.8.0? I had an older version working (even in quick reply!), then tried to update some things and now I can't figure out how to get the damn thing to work again. It only works on newpost or newreply, I think.

It works fine on my 3.8.0 board. After the update I found that most of the edits from the Manual Template Editing.txt were missing and once I did those all is well.

Yeah, but my existing spellcheck button used to work, without having to install ieSpell. I didn't have to add another extra spell button in every template. What screwed me was thinking I should update to this version. I didn't know it wasn't the same as the last version, and I ran the xml file. It hasn't worked right since, even though I uninstalled it and installed the earlier version again. (Which had no manual template edits, except the one for quick edit, which I never did get to work. But at least it worked everywhere else!) What exactly did it do that made the earlier version stop working as completely as it used to? More importantly, what code in the templates that still do work is responsible for that? Maybe I can add it to the others and get them working again. If anyone has this working with the older version, with the iespell button, will you please post your templates?

Does this version of vbspell work with 3.8?

This version is nothing like the old version, which worked so well with the existing iespell button. This one requires you to install an extra button in all the templates listed. (That's what all that manual editing is about.) Too much of a PITA, IMO. And I don't want two spell check buttons...I just want the old one to work, as if iespell were installed, even if it's not installed. That's how it used to work.

Hummn.... sounds a bit like it was in 3.0... I think I had to edit quite a few templates.. but I think it's less than six...

If it works, I'll install it, my users are used to it (me also) and it looks like iespell only works with... badabing... IE.. which, isn't necessairly, the only browser folks use these days..

Oh well.. Vbull guys, wish you'd simply add an option in the admin panel to enable this useful feature....

If you read above, the author claims it does not work with IE. It used to work with any browser in any form, except quick edit. I think someone needs to take a look at the old version and update it so it works like it used to. There were no manual template edits before (except one optional edit), since it worked with the existing button. Right now, I just went ahead and installed iespell and advised everyone else to do the same. Mozilla has their own spell check add ons, so they can get their own as far as I'm concerned. I'm not a fan of FF, and I don't cater to those who use it. Recently, one of my users was using FF3, and was having some weird problems with tables not appearing correctly. Nobody else was having any problems. She finally went back to FF2 and all returned to normal. All I will do is try to make the forum display correctly for those who use anything but IE. If they have any other random and/or isolated problems that can't be reproduced, then there's nothing I can do for them.

Yeah, I really don't understand why the most feature rich forum has to be hacked just to have a working spell check. :rolleyes:

Well, it's funny, if you google back a few years for posts from the dev's on this forum, (actually, on the dot com version) they give you a pretty good explanation of why they did not impliment spellcheck into vbull.. I think the key word was "server intensive"...

Well, times have changed, servers are pretty roubust, lots of folks can/do afford dedicated boxes for their boards, I've run the old 3.0 version, have had so many folks, that the server cut them off (like over 500 and I had not yet adjusted the limits) and no problmes whatsoever with vbspell...

Comon Vbull team, at least, give those of us who have robust servers that can deal with this, the option to use it, without trolling boards to find a "hack" to do what this board can do without any outside help!!!!!!!

You can do it!!!!!!!

All they'd have to do is have a simple checkbox to disable it for whomever would like to disable it, if it became a problem. I'm running a dedicated server right from my house, on a measely (and ridiculously slow) DSL connection and have never had any problems. It's not even that robust of a server, but hell, the entire forum runs from RAM alone, pretty much. I rarely even see the HDD light flicker, if ever. (unless it's doing backups or something) Granted, I don't normally have 500 members, but I have had 793 users online at once, and never had any complaints. (And that was before I even upgraded my server.)

As a member who is very unfamiliar with template modification, I would love if this mod could automatically do that somehow. I really would like a spell check installed, but I'm a bit uncertain about having to go through and edit the templates individually.

This is a great mod though, from the forums where I've seen it implemented.

Hello.

I?ve installed this version into my vb 3.8.1 and it works great. :) Thank you.

There is still one problem. My spellcheck is in german, ive found the german dictionary and it works good but when there is a word called "Rechtschreibpr?fung" or "Kr?uter" the vb spellcheck always cut the word after the ?, ? or ? and the spellcheck means that "Rechtschreibpr" und "?fung" are two words. The same with "?"!! How can i fix this problem?

Thank you very much. :)

Out of curiosity, are those that are having troubles using AME (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=202476)?

When viewing the source for the vbspell popup, I see this:

<script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.mysite.com/vbspell.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript">
<script type=\"text/javascript\">ame_toggle_view({other : 'true',post : 'true',blog : 'true',group : 'true',vm : 'true',sig : 'true'});</script>var mispstr = "My Search String";
var misps = Array();;
</script>It looks like the AME script is being inserted in the middle of the vBSpell script.

I may look at the plugins and see if I can figure it out.

OK, here is something weird. I installed this on my site at traprunner.com and it went flawlessly. I did the exact same thing at hidingplace.com and it installed perfectly, but it does not display the ABC icon anywhere. I just double-checked and all my template edits are there and without typos.

Ideas?

I have vbspell installed on my 3.8.3 site and it works great as I used the TMS to add all the template changes but the problem is that TMS is causing issue for me, When I try to modify or view any styles in Style Manage in admincp everyting looks messy as everything is not displaying correctly. If I disable TMS everything works and looks normal but VBSell links no longer show up. Can someone post the template changer for VBSPELL please so I can change them manually and uninstall TMS .....Unless there is a way to uninstall TMS and leave all the template changes intact..

I am still having vbSpell 1.3 issues on my vb3.8.3 system. On IE, it does not popup at all and shows an error in the lower left corner of the browser. The error says"

I read on this this thread that you are having problems with it working in IE, which is a huge shame. I tried in in Firefox and get this error.
var mispstr = "
"; var misps = Array();;
and then the message:
vB Spell installation problem, please notify the webmaster.

A couple of notes:
1) I do not use TMS, it never works for me, so I am stuck using the manual template edits.
2) Your template edit instructions refer to adding<input type="button" class="button" value="Spell Check" onClick="spellCheck('vbform', '$editorid', '2');" />after<input type="submit" class="button" name="preview" value="$vbphrase[preview_message]" accesskey="r" tabindex="1" />in several templates, the problem is that in those templates, there are 2 or more entries of ]<input type="submit" class="button" name="preview" value="$vbphrase[preview_message]" accesskey="r" tabindex="1" />Do I add the code after all of them?
3) I read somewhere in this thread that there may be a problem with this program and AME. I am running AME and cannot get rid of it. Could this be the problem? is there a workaround?

As it is now, I have to uninstall this as it does not work at all.

Ideas?

Yeah, I wanted to install this specifically for IE users since most other browsers have built-in spell checking. I'd install it and try to mess with it but I don't have the time right now. Perhaps in the future.

Under Plugin Manager in my admincp there was something called "vB Spell Template Changes" which I dont believe is being used with this version and may of been a left over from when I upgraded my site from vb 3.5 to 3.8.x and upgraded to the latest version of vbspell, I disabled vB Spell Template Changes and everything works now including vbspell.....

If you are not going to update, why not pass this

as this would be a very useful tool for those
