I've seen several forums, including this one that use [ ] around certain words. For instance [AJAX], what is that mod to be able to do that?

this is BBCODE you are talking about..

its a default feature of every board softwares..

Do a search for Thread Prefixes

Is that Thread prefixes you are talking about ?? it is a default feature in vB 3.7 and here (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=123033) for 3.6
