Change Posts Owner
Created by Marius Czyz aka Phalynx.
Tested on vBulletin 3.6, 3.7 and 3.8
What does this modification do?
It can change the owner and date of multiple threads and post. For this, it adds another option to your mod actions on forumdisplay, showthread and search results. After selecting some threads or posts, you can choose the new owner by name or by UserID. "By name" works with the AJAX namesuggestion, we all know it from writing a PM. After changing the name, it rebuilds thread/forum counters and post counter of old and new user. Attachments will also be assigned to new user.
Installtime: <1 minutes
Difficulty: very easy (1 product)
Demo is not available, due to missing permissions on my board.
Please click Mark as INSTALLED, otherwise I will not support you.
Features
- Can change owner and date of selected posts and threads (including database attachments - it will not move file attachments)
- Can change owner to unregistered user and back
- Can accept user id and username
- Username input is driven by AJAX
- Post count of involved users will be increased/decreased
- Thread and forum counters of involved threads and forums will be rebuild
- Supports inline moderation
- Makes use of $template_hooks, hooks and simple group permissions
- Every change will leave a notice in moderation log
Features for future releases
- Incrementally change time, f.e. first posts is 12:01:01, second one will get 12:01:02h, third one 12:01:03h....
- Moving file based attachments to the new user
How to install?- Simply import product
How to upgrade?- Uninstall existing product, install new one

Long period leave absences, job changes, etc... Among many others examples, boards where Threads with important contents must be updated from time to time by the thread(s) owner(s).

Sort of understand. But if a user is away for an extended period of time, why would someone else take over ownership of his/her posts/threads? Wouldn't other owners just keep replying to keep the threads/posts alive?

Hello!
Nice mod - thanks!
will just ask ... can we use this mod when we will move or separate some posts from some threads? (exp. user who posts with re: prefix - make like thread owner in another forum?) - that is sometimes problem when we move some posts ... and they come on top of threads!

If you cannot find a valueable reason for this mod than you probably don't need it.

In my experience - There is this thread started by some user long time ago, he was banned and he just have 3 post inside the thread. The thread become so popular and in my case i posted 90 percent of the replies or updates to that thread. People ask who is that thread starter all the time :) the thread is about Photos = Models.
So this hack is helpful in a way.
Scenario 2
We started from those freeboards. no way u can back up. we got tons of good materials. Now mods are assign to manually copy paste from freeboards = VB.
With this, mods can easily copy paste/move then rename it to proper thread owners.
Nice hack installed.
Very good and useful mod...

You have a forum with a Rules sticky. When current mods leave, and new mods come in, you just change the post owner to the new mod, so that people know who the moderator of that forum is. :D

I use two accounts on my board. One is my personal account, the other used to post notices under my business name for a more professional touch.

What general purpose can this MOD serve? What reasons would there be for the original post owner be changed to someone else?
Maybe I'm missing something here...why would you need/use this?
One example, is that I use both the "admin" account (for some admincp functions) and also my personal account. Occassionally, I'm accidently logged in as "admin" and reply to a post or start a new thread, this mod would easily enable me to change it to my normal user acct.
I actually looked for this in the standard Vbulletin and was expecting to find it, seems like it is something that would come up fairly often. I'm happy to find this mod and give it a try.
Thanks,
Jason

My main account was deleted and the messages created under that account were changed to "Guest". Is there any way to do a mass search and replace on these messages?
Phalynx
05-12-2008, 11:07 AM
No, this modification does not work with guest posts.
Instead, you will have to run a query to assign the posts to a user.

ok, I got it
only the first post of the thread will be modified
I have another issue
when I search for all the posts of some user, I can't find the in the options the option of changing posts owner.. but when I search for his threads I can find that option
I've two IDs in my forum and I want to change all the threads and posts in my second ID to the first one.. but when tried doing that when search for all the posts by the user I couldn't find that option..
how can I make the option show in the options of the results of the all user's posts?
I hope you got what I mean ^-^
thanks
:)
Super Jinni
05-18-2008, 06:14 PM
OK, I got that to work
all what I had to do is just to add the code<option value="changepostsowner">$vbphrase[changepostsowner_link]</option> after the code <option value="unapproveposts">$vbphrase[unapprove_posts]</option> in the "search_results" template
if there is any another way to do that please let me know
thanks

05-18-2008, 09:43 PM
Hi Marius, just wondering, is possible in the next version improve something for the 'reset or change' the IP? cause if i change the thread/post's owner he takes the IP of the older owner ...
Phalynx
05-18-2008, 09:50 PM
What IP should be taken? Last known IP of the new owner or the last post IP of the new owner?
KURTZ
05-18-2008, 09:55 PM
let me explain better:
1) i wrote a thread with my IP
2) i change the owner from me to another user
3) i do a IP search in the ACP (i put my IP)
4) the result told me that me (obviously) and the new owner have the same IP ... this isn't correct i think ... :)
also if i put the mouse over the icon in the post it told me that the IP (after the change) was mine ...
Phalynx
05-18-2008, 09:57 PM
I know what you mean. That's why I asked WHICH IP should be used for the new owner post?
KURTZ
05-18-2008, 09:59 PM
i dunno Marius, maybe the IP of the new owner? or nothing? :)

great hack......people may ask why u need this hack??? I would provide u with reasons. Say u are transfering from PHPBB3 forum to vbulletin and u find that the post owners are not matching , then u can easily change the post owner to match the same.
Anyways Phalynx i have a query . How can i put this option in the moderator menu in "search all the post by user" . I want to trasfer bulk post from one user a/c to another so i think if i can put this is the moderator menu in "search all the post by user" then that would have helped me .

You said it works in 3.8. I really don't have time to upadate. Can you tell me wich template edits should I do or something.
Thanks
Phalynx
06-24-2008, 11:52 AM
vB 3.8 is not out yet. If you mean 3.6.8 - update your templates to 3.6.8
I said it *should* work, I used the word should because of the introduced template hooks. If you are using old templates you don't have the hooks.
Options are not displayed. How do I add them manually?
If you choose to not automatically add both options you have to add that options manually.
1. Disable automatic template edit in the Change threads/posts owner settings
2. Open the template FORUMDISPLAY.
Search for:
<option value="mergethread">$vbphrase[merge_threads]</option>
Add after it:
<option value="changethreadsowner">$vbphrase[changethreadsowner_link]</option>
3. Open the template SHOWTHREAD
Search for:
<option value="undeleteposts">$vbphrase[undelete_posts]</option>
Add after it:
<option value="changepostsowner">$vbphrase[changepostsowner_link]</option>

Never, never use this under the influence. LOL
I had an ex poster who was an A**h*le. I installed and thought I made all his post to "Ex-Member" but only one was attributed to that name. The rest of his 300 post went to MY NAME! LOL
Not a bug. I just forgot that I had checked "all post" before hand.
Live and learn eh?

did you mix up the release dates für the two versions? I can't believe you released 1.7 (4 June 2008) before 1.6 (19 June 2008) ;-)

if there are attachment in the post saved to the file system it gives an error that the attachment can not be found.
is there a workaround for this?

Cannot confirm this. When do you get the message?
lstintxs100
08-13-2008, 05:36 AM
I got the message after uploading a number of pdf documents to the forum. I store them in the file system due to the size of the files. they can be a few k in size to over a 100 meg.
I uploaded a number of files and then changed the name of the user associated with the files. When I went to look at the files to download them for testing I get the error. I Then moved the owner of the thread back to the original person who posted the message and was able to download the files fine.

I have previews and attachments as zip files. The only thing this has done is change the users name. When viewing the thread after a change the preview is now a red X and the attachment gives an error page.
So unless this can move the attachments from one users folder to the new one this will not work.
And as above, change it back to the original user and everything is fine.

Really great mod, although I am having one little problem with it. When changing the time on multiple posts at once, vb for whatever reason reverses the order of the posts. So the last post in the thread becomes the first, and the first becomes the last. So I was wondering if there was anyway that the time change could be done incrementally?
So that if I select 3 posts in a thread and tell it to change the post's time to 08 00 00, then that would be the time of the first post, the 2nd post would be changed to 08 00 01 or 08 01 00 (and the 3rd 08 00 02 or 08 02 00)? Do you think this might be possible?
Or if that isn't possible do you know how vb determined the post order, that an option could be put in to reverse the order of post processing (thereby putting things back in the correct order)?

vB 3.8 is not out yet. If you mean 3.6.8 - update your templates to 3.6.8
I said it *should* work, I used the word should because of the introduced template hooks. If you are using old templates you don't have the hooks.
Options are not displayed. How do I add them manually?
If you choose to not automatically add both options you have to add that options manually.
1. Disable automatic template edit in the Change threads/posts owner settings
2. Open the template FORUMDISPLAY.
Search for:
<option value="mergethread">$vbphrase[merge_threads]</option>
Add after it:
<option value="changethreadsowner">$vbphrase[changethreadsowner_link]</option>
3. Open the template SHOWTHREAD
Search for:
<option value="undeleteposts">$vbphrase[undelete_posts]</option>
Add after it:
<option value="changepostsowner">$vbphrase[changepostsowner_link]</option>
Great Advice for vB 3.6.8, works fine on that Version but requires this Template Edits for the Options to Appear.
My Best Regards.

I have a question regarding this mod. I know you already said the purpose is to change thread and post owners, but what about post count as well as attachments? Will those all be automatically be updated too? As in the owner of the attachments would change from one user to the other, and if the post count would also be altered. Thanks.

Found a bug with this mod... it doesnt hasn't 12-HOUR clocks. If a post was made at 6:30 PM... the edit box will automatically enter 6:30... the problem is that it should be entering 18:30... So if I edit anything, the time gets pushed back 12 hours.

This works fine apart from if the post has an attachment in.
Basically after changing the owner of the post the attachment won’t be found, however if you change the post owner back to the member who uploaded the attachment it works fine.
I don’t suppose there is a work around for this?

My test user (registered forum user - usergroup #2) was assigned moderator permissions and was able to successfully alter the thread author even though usergroup 6 was the only usergroup assigned permissions. Is there a way to prevent forum moderators from having the ability to change a threads author ... or have I bulllsed up somewhere?

Thanks for this mod. I'm using it on my site to change the date and time for my RSS news (when an RSS feed is added for the first time all the news get the same date and time). The mod is working great, except for some minor problem with the time. For example, if I want the new time to be 6PM I need to set the time to 12.00 with this mod.

Phalynx
01-09-2009, 03:42 PM
Nadeemjp, why do you ask in 3 different threads of 3.7 hacks where you could take a look at the 3.8 hacks and find it there? Yes, it is compatible, just check the 3.8 mod section.
Well, not sure what the problem is but I entered: 02 / 15 / 2009 into the boxes and the date returned as 03/02/10
What the ????
RESOLVED: I was entering the typical M/D/Y format into the boxes but realize now that the extension's boxes are in D/M/Y format. I just have to remember to do the date a little differently. I did have to go in and fix the "futuristic" listings via PhpMyAdmin but the issue is resolved and it's working as intended.

Works a treat. Thanks!
Allows me to change the date of calendar threads and move them into the news section so they appear after the event as a news item and aren't buried under threads more recently created.
Now, if I could find some bright spark who could create the code to do it automatically, that would be superb, but this is a good short term solution.

inlinemod_thread_bottom
inlinemod_post_bottom
If yes, this mod should work. Otherwise you will have to edit the templates.

Sorry if this is a silly question....but where do I look for templates hooks?
2nd question..
How do I......1. Disable automatic template edit in the Change threads/posts owner settings... should I need to edit templates.
I could make good use of this mod with the ability to change date and time of the post/thread.
The previous version doesn't allow change of date/time...right?

This is a great mod. The only thing missing is the ability to subscribe the new owner to their new thread.
For example,
- create a thread >
- change owner >
- subscribe new owner to the new thread >
- and then when it gets replies, the new owner will be made aware of it.
Right now you'll have to email or PM the new owner, otherwise he/she will never know it exists. :(
I'd code it myself, if I knew how.

is there a way so that supermoderators can change post author?
Phalynx

The permission to change author is bound to the ability to moderate a thread, so supermoderators should be able to use it over the whole forum - beside the usergroup defined in settings.

Try the product to which Chris (ozzy47) linked to above.
Be aware though that in that product's thread, a vB 4.2.3 user reports that a deprecation error arises because of the PHP split() function being used, so you will likely have to edit one of the plugins to use the explode() function instead.
Given that you state you have never installed a mod before, I am guessing you may need help with this, so if you want, create a temporary admin account for me on your site, send the login credentials to me via PM, and I will see if I can get it to work on your site. :)
