--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello everyone. I originally posted this topic on vbulletin-faq.com and one of the administrators suggested that I ask about it here for better feedback

I joined here to try and inquire if Vbulleting is for me or not.

I have a vision for a text based role playing game site and i was wondering if Vbulletin could be used to achieve this.

I basically do this on another Vbulletin site right now but most of the activities are done manual by volunteer staff.

It's basically where people create fictional characters and they live in villages where they are sent on quests, do battle with each other, and train their characters.

Going on quests and battling each other earns them money. They can then use the money they earn to buy upgrades and equipment for their characters. Going on quests will earn you QP (quest points), battling each other will earn you BP (battle points) and training will earn you XP (experience points).

I envision using vbulletin to have a section in the user cp that shows how much money a character has. Further more. Characters will have different ranks and so on. On top of that there will be a store. Here's an example: Lets say i want to purchase a fire spell from the store... Well I want to have it where Vbulletin will automatically know if i qualify to purchase that spell by checking my rank, and XP to make sure that i meet the requirements to use that spell. And of course, for Vbulletin to automatically deduct the money from my account.

of course i don't expect Vbulletin to magically know everything...the way i envision it is that on certain issues vbulletin will prompt a mod (or Game Master - as we call them) to issue an approval. For example, when completing a quest a game master (mod) will determine how much money you've earned and manually adjust your bank account. There's more to it than just this alone but i just wanted to give a brief summary and not geek out too much over it.

Wow...i hope this doesn't sound too weird or outrageous to anyone here...i swear i do this all the time on a vbulletin forum except we manually do all those things i'm hoping for vbulletin to automate.

Also, I know I need to have a license to receive support from this community and everything but i didn't want to purchase a license just to find out that vbulleting may not be the right option for me.

And if i posted this in the wrong section please forgive me.

RPG Inferno v3.0.0 Gold

http://infernotechnologies.net/

i took a look at it, it was quite nice but i couldn't get a good grasp of everything because the demo only let you creat a character and everything else was disabled....and the page that's supposed to let you explore the features received and error and said it was under construction.

Thanks though...maybe i should consider hiring someone to custom code it then? Are there people like that hear that might be looking for work and can give me a quote based on specifics?

If you are intrested in a product on another site ask there about it.

You could get someone to code it but to undertake what ZT has done is a VERY VERY long process your talking weeks of work and would cost alot of $$.

i'll pay up to $1000...i can't see paying more than that for a 'not for profit' site. Who's ZT?

ZT is the author of the RPG Inferno mod.

My advice again is to post at the official website, after a quick look around I was easily able to find a full admin panel for the RPG.

I play on Sryth, Ikariam and tribalwars, which are all browser based games, Sryth comes pretty close to what you are describing, none of them use forum software (except for their community forums). The kind of functionality I think you are looking for is not handled well by vb.

Having said that, I run www.myth-weavers.com, and vb is excellent for that, and it is heavily modded to support rpg, just not the kind of rpg you are talking about.

I spoke to one of the developers of inferno. Decado, i think was his name.. andwhile it does solve some of the things i'd like to have done, he said it still won't do everything on my list. he was really polite and everything. He did however also mention that vbulletin is a good platform for what i'm trying to accomplish, so i'm grateful that i'm at least still barking up the right tree - so to speak

But thanks everyone for the help and suggestions. I'd be absolutely lost without them.

It looks like i might have to have custom work done. Might anyone in the very least know where i can get coders with this kind of experience? Someone reliable who won't rip me off? and who might be available for future upgrades? Seriously, i'm really new to this. I do have a background in 3rd generation languages like C++ and visual basic but nothing web based.

Will this be the platform to do this? Sure. In fact, you can automate much of it, but as you said, you need to verify a bit of it yourself.

Here are a couple of mods that would help you get started:
VB Experience (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=171014)
You Replacement (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=169166)
iCash (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=165962) (you'd have to have some way for them to cash things in, and a way to add the store itself, but that's a start).

The only problem I'd see would be giving cash for 'kills', or quests, both of those might have to be done manually. The rest, I'm sure you could find a way to work with.

Even the 'public messages' (in profiles) part of VB would be an excellent way to carry on an RP based conversation.

This is quite possible to do, indeed. It'll just take a good bit of work to do, though if you find the right developer, it'd be great.

also think that your $1000 prob will not be half the amount you need.. myself i would stick with RPGinferno a lot of work has already been done on it and i would think there is a lot more to do..
