I've been running version 3.6.8 and I've seen many other forums still using older version of vBulletin.
Is it absolutely dire to upgrade to the newest version? I've had vB for less than a year and am not too familiar with backing everything up and then upgrading.
Kinda just want to stick with what I have going.

It is always recommended that you use the latest version available. (Currently 3.6.10).
New releases that include security fixes should always really be upgraded to.

I'm not going to upgrade.. it's not worth it (since I'm planning to upgrade 3.7 once it goes gold and most of the mods I have now have been migrated)
I just won't click on any funny links for the time being.

What do "funny links" have to do with not upgrading? You want to keep up with bug fixes in order to keep your site from being hacked into. Vulnerabilities in the code are what allow that to happen, and updates address those flaws, as well as address any code errors that might not have been known until the script was being used live.
