Users can select their display usergroup in their User CP.

AWCoding is working on a subscription system for vbulletin. You can test some of his products here and on his website at www.allwheelcoding.com.
What your asking for I think will be included. He is very good at taking suggestions so you might want to visit his site and make them there, being that you have some experience with subscriptions.

From within the Usergroup options...
Can override primary group title/markup = YES
Enable this option if you use this group as a member (secondary) group and you want group members to have this group's user title and username markup instead of the user title and username markup from their primary group.

Oh, I think I understand now... I'm thinking you would need to set up your subscriptions to change the users primary usergroup to the new subscription usergroup and have the original primary usergroup added as an additional usergroup. The only way to differ the Moderators is to set up an additonal subscription(s) available only to the moderators where their subscribed usergroups get added as an additional usergroup, thus giving them the additional access or whatever without changing their user-titles and or shown status. Another way would be template variables using if/then for the Moderator user-titles, but I haven't a clue right now how to implement that one.
