Making a fixed and fluid skin

How easy is it to convert a fluid skin to a fixed skin? And vice-versa?
Also how would one go about doing so.

Fluid going to width is easy. You just set a max width for the page. However making a fixed skin into fluid would require alot of work depending on the images.

Certain images can not repeat.
