usergroup selection on registration

Is it possible to allow a user to select a usergroup to join on registration? even Paid subscription usergroups?

There is a modification around that will allow setting the usergroup based on a profile field (which could be entered during registration).

I can't find one for 3.7.0 - are you able to point me in the direction of it please? (i'm not known for my search capabilities ;))
