Need instructions on how to import and install a mod or hack

I've hunted around and haven't been about to find what I want. Is there a step by step instruction on how I can add a modification?

I can upload to my server with FTP, but I'm at a loss after that. I'm afraid I'll trash my VBulletin program unless I have instructions.

Anyone able to point me to some instructions?
