Force Users to Read a Thread 2.0

About this hack:
This hack allows you to set a thread as 'must read' by your members. Right now, if you make a post and want all your members to read it, you have no way of enforcing it. This hack will give an error message similar to the one you get when you need to change you password, saying that the admins want you to read a certain thread before they continue using the forum.

Once a user reads a thread, they wont be bugged to read it again.

You can set all usergroups or just certain onces that must read a thread.

You can set to site wide or just some forums.

Option to Force Guests

This hack added one query to every page on your forum a member goes to.

Zip file updated. admincp/force_read_thread.php file updated to fix error for vb3.6.x users.

Now i don't receive the admin panel error, but if i try to insert new thread force from admin panel and i save, after i can see it.
And the force read don't work.
If i try to manage the read from thread directly (like 1.2 versione) i see this, a blank field.

You should have removed the template edit. You can't use that way right now.

As for the adding via the ACP, can you explain to me what happens?

Sorry, there is only the option from the ACP. No way to do it from the thread. The location of the settings is just not there any more. I totally re-wrote the who settings and did it in a way that you can see all in one place. I may make a link from the thread again, but just not now.

These threads that are required for all members to read are difficult to even pull up.

When I log in, it tells me there is a message the Admin wants you to view. I click the link, and it just brings me to a "page cannot be found" link. I open it in a new tab (in BOTH IE and Firefox) and open in new window. I get the same thing. It takes multiple sign-off, sign-ins to get this to work. This is not the first time this has happened either. Previous admin messages have resulted in the same thing.

this is what i got from a members and i tried a new accoutn for test and it works out for me

Abe, i just tried to install this mod onto Beta 5 and i saw your instructions:

Open file global.php

Find:
--------------------------------------------------------------------
if (!empty($db->explain))
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Place BEFORE:
--------------------------------------------------------------------
($hook = vBulletinHook::fetch_hook('global_setup_complete') ) ? eval($hook) : false;
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Save file.

Open file includes/xml/hooks_vbulletin.xml

Find:
--------------------------------------------------------------------
<hook>global_start</hook>
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Place AFTER:
--------------------------------------------------------------------
<hook>global_setup_complete</hook>
--------------------------------------------------------------------

i checked these files, and i saw that these lines are already in these files ... :)

I had this working fine yesterday, now today the ACP does not show the option to add or change the thread anymore. The thread we used for a test is being read by all members.

Other suggestion- Instructions are not clear, I think some people may be taking an entire thread URL and pasting it into the thread ID box. What goes there is only the number of the thread, nothing else. That's why some of you do not see the thread. Try just he thread id number...

To add: I can access the edit option by direct-typing the url to the control- "/admincp/force_read_thread.php"

Great mod and it works for most of my members, but I've had two members (so far) out of a total of 300 registered members and 50 who have logged in since I enabled the mod, who get stuck and can't access the site.

They see the splash screen (The Admin wants you to read this thread), but when they click on the link, they get an error screen so can't continue in to the site.

Member #1 contacted me with this message It says that the administrators want me to view a thread before I browse the forum. Then it has a link for me to click.
Whe I click the link, it does not take me to a thread, just has 3 reasons that the link did not work..

Member #2 posted this: when I jumped on this morning it said I had to open the thread before I could go anywhere else.. I clicked the button to open it and i got the oops error page.. I went back and tried again, same thing. I even tried just bringing up the link on the right under your name that says you have ### many unread post, still got the error page.. so it locked me out for a little today. I ended up clicking on the calender link and that some how got me to the new thread. so I am not sure if it was just me, and I am hoping others are not having a issue getting to the forums

I am asking both members about what browser they are using... any ideas or suggestions? I think it is a GREAT and useful mod and would have to hate to not use it because it "breaks" the site for some people.

I had the 3.6 version installed. I disabled all of my plugins before updating from 3.6.10 to 3.7 gold. The Force read wasn't working. So I uninstalled and then installed the latest version. I can get it to work, but what about the old threads that I had made force-read with the 3.6.x version? I'm getting vb db errors in my email due to those threads. It seems I have no way to manage the previous force-read threads now that I've upgraded the plugin. And even before I upgraded, I still couldn't manage them because the link in "thread tools" was gone. How can I fix this?

It had to uninstalled before you upgraded versions. You have to uninstall this version, reinstall the old version then uninstall it so it clears out all old things. After, you can re-install this version.

Is it possible to make Announcements force read as well?

I've installed this and cannot see the option yet, I'm trying to double check everything to make sure I did not miss anything.

All files uploaded, product installed, this was the first time I'm installing it. Using 3.7.0 gold.

Accessing "/admincp/force_read_thread.php" works as seen in this post (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=1479934&postcount=58), but I cannot get to that page anywhere else.

Also once adding via that page nothing is saved. I guess I will uninstall for now and wait for an update. Thanks though, I've used the 3.6.X before with no problems (aside from multiple read requests)

I found my problem - for some reason Firefox had just about everything cached, so only after I closed the browser and relogged in was the admin setting there. I havn't had that before so not sure why it happened now.

5 stars still though :)

I am having this issue as well. I did a test for my Super Moderators. It worked for about 6 people, but not 2. They got the message, clicked the button and one got 404 errors and one got some sort of an error about displaythread.php not found or something like that. So Ive had to turn it off until this can hopefully be fixed, which I hope it can be because we really could use this. Everything else was fine...install...setup etc. Running on 3.7.1. This was a virgin install of this hack.

Installed on a heavily moded 3.7.0 forum, works perfect. Installed on a 3.7.1 stock forum, and see the option in the admincp, not in the thread tools. Also, when I add a thread in the admincp, it doesn't show up even though I get a saved message... Odd.

Since I want my members to see the forum and its threads, but not post, I excluded forumdisplay.php and showthread.php

I got two queries on this....

I am currently using the previous version of this hack on my forum running 3.7. I installed this when my forum was on 3.6.8 and after the upgrade of the forum software, this hack is working fine except for one incident, which is mentioned below.
Can I upgrade to this new version of this hack and keep the current settings as it is so that the members who had already read the thread will not be prompted again after the upgrade.
I am using vbAdvanced CMPS, and whenever my users use the URL www.forumname.com (http://www.forumname.com) to go to my site, they get the Administrator message to read the thread. But the link will be http://www.forumname.com/showthread.php?t=xxx. Whereas my actual forum URL is http://www.forumname.com/forums/showthread.php?t-=xxx. But if my users use the URL www.forumhome.com/forums (http://www.forumhome.com/forums) to access the page from their browsers, all works fine. Can anybody please give me ideas how to sort out the above two problems.

one small issue i have is the amount of people that have told me they dont know what to do when the page comes up, seemingly 'click here' isn't clear enough! is there anyway i can underline the word 'here' just to highlight the link, i played about with my skin settings but they dont seem to affect the link text of this hack.

What if you have vbSEO installed and it rewrites your URL so you don't know what your thread ID is?

Why was this question not answered???? Hmmmm - probably because the "upgrade" seemed to have left out all of those with vBSEO installed?

Anyway - I was looking forward to this - but apparently cannot use it - It was much simpler and more robust to have the options available right in the threads, rather than the AdminCP - Weird really, because IMO an upgrade or update to such a hack is supposed to be better or more feature rich. Sorry - you didn't seem to accomplish that with this upgrade.

Oh well...

Thanx for sharing anyway...

There needs to be better instructions man! It took quite awhile to figure out how to use this mod!!

Thread ID - is just that, you make a thread you want to be force read, then enter that threads id # into the thread ID box

Force read order - is the display order I believe

Expire - You can set it to expire on a certain date by checking yes for expire, or you can leave it up indefinately by checking no.

Date - Set the date for expiring if thats what you want

Usergroups - Select which groups have to read the thread (ctrl + click on each name to add multiples)

Location - If you select site wide it will redirect on login. Otherwise you can set the message to a specific forum or sub-forum

Enjoy :)

Make a new post whatever you want ... then after you click submit new thread --- click on thread tools - edit thread - in the address bar is the # you need .. for example
www.whatever/forums/postings.php?t=23736&pollid=

the 23736 is the number you use in the force thread ..

click add new thread ..

add the # you located earlier ..

select if you want the force read to expire or not , if yes select a date ..

Highlight any users that you want force them to read the thread ..

Click save ...

It will work .. It took me awhile to figure this out too ...

Does this add a query to every page or just those pages related to the forums where a user is forced to read a thread before posting?

Zurual

There's something iffy with the Display Order and Force Read order. For instance: If I create a thread I want visitors to read and Force Read it, marking it as #2 on the force read order, it inherits the usergroups from the Force read #1 thread..even though they are two seperate entities in the Force Read thread admin area. Basically, in a nutshell, Add two threads via the adminCP to Force Read, they inherit the usergroup listing of those threads created before it with force read.

Something isn't right. Using Vbulletin 3.7.0. Screenshots below confirm I've only chosen the Warhammer Rank to be forced to read this thread. But if you look at the other screenshot, you'll see it also is forcing visitors and Users waiting on Email Conf. to view it as well because the other, completely separate entry, forces those two ranks to read another thread. I'm a bit of a noob so if it's an easy fix, that's fine. But I've wracked my brain on why it would be doing this. My only conclusion is it's something to do with the Display Order (oddly).

Extremely useful for several reasons.

I use this feature to ensure that all staff members see changes/updates/important threads in the staff lounge.

I also use this feature to ensure that new members have at least seen a thread that points them to the rules/faq/staff list on the forum.

And since we have sections that have special rules within them, we have this feature set up so members are forced to read those special rules the first time they enter the section.

This hack makes rule and update communications much easier, saving sticky threads for the important things like historical lists and references, instead of inundating members with tons and tons of sticky threads everywhere they go.

Stellar hack.

I'm finding this too.

I go to add a new thread, leave the display order at its default (previous + 10), set the thread ID, usergroups and forum coverage, and when I create, it has inherited the groups of those above it.

I wonder what the issue is.

That. ^

2) Also, the date/clock is buggy. It changes the date and time to something completely different after I've edited it.

3) The server load is killer, too. Needed to disable the hack.

Some support on this would be nice, since it is labeled as supported. You have people waiting on it. :)

Zip file updated (again). admincp/force_read_thread.php file updated to fix error of not adding the force read.

Fixed. Search "force read" and removed the edit around it.

OK a find it sorry:

Hey Abe, I searched for the phrase and came up with nothing. Can you let me know the path so i can manually edit the modification out of it? I am sure it is there because i was using v1 and my issue is the same as mc0676's... only in English :)

Potential serious warning about this hack. I've heard that if you have threads that you require reading using this hack that all bots can't get past it because they don't accept cookies.

So, nothing on your site can get indexed by google.

Not sure how true this but it seems reasonable. Does anyone have any ideas on this?

Interesting thought...

I have been using this as I bring my new install up... works good, but when you have mulitple messages pending to be read, the 'slow' users have a hard time with it.

Maybe It could list out the thread titles on the page that says admin wants you to read, and maybe a better way of 'checking them off' as they are read?

I fear people read it, use the back button, get back to the message, and get stuck in an ID-10T loop...

I run into that alot... I think they use their 'back' button. I also suspect its worse if you have multiple threads required... Hence the reason for my request above.

Thank you, Abe1... This hack works great. Although, I've struggled a bit at first due to my ignorance. So, I went back to the Force users template and re-assigned the force with proper thread ID and forum location that makes the hack worked as designed.

However, I have 1 question:

How do I change or add additional message to the default message ".... administrator want...." with unicode (utf-8) language (vietnamese)? Any suggestion would be appreciated!

Thanks again!

Since I want my members to see the forum and its threads, but not post, I excluded forumdisplay.php and showthread.php

OK, since I excluded showthread.php, I guess this is the reason why it now does not register when members look at the thread in question. So they keep getting bugged about it and can not use the forum.

Any ideas?

I had recently upgraded by forum to 3.7.4 PL1

I have custom usergroups in my forum. When I mention Moderator Group to view a thread, I got to see both the Registered user and Moderator Group in the Admin CP. But I am sure I didn't select Registered user, and it comes by default.

Even I tried to add just the Registered User, and I could see twice Registered user in the Admin CP

Hope somebody can help me on this.

Thanks
