The buddy list how can one modify the buddy list to do the following

I need the buddy list to support groups so when one buddy belongs to a certian group I need to know that the buddys belong to group x and these buddys belong to group Y and these belong to both group x and y. Any one have any ideas or has come across a solution that does this.
