CHMOD Problem

I'm trying to install somthing and i have to CHMOD a few folders but when i do so i get this error,how can i fix this?

500 'SITE CHMOD 777 arcade': command not understood

You need to chmod thru ftp or thru a shell account, how are you trying to chmod the folders?

I would chmod it thru a shell, the 500 error is telling you that it dont understand the command, you can also try a different ftp browser.

Its strange it worked before then all of a sudden it wouldn't allow me to do it again.

I don't know how chmod it through a shell so i'll try it with filezilla and see how i get on.

It still done the same with filezilla,how do you do it through a shell?

chmod 777 /path/to/folder/name

cd to public_html

chmod 777 arcade/

what have i to do with that? sorry ive not even heard of doing it through a shell before.
