View Full Version : Miscellaneous Hacks - [you] Replacement

Boofo
01-29-2008, 10:00 PM
Here it is! The [you] hack ported over to vB 3.7 beta 4.

I have ported this over to vBulletin 3.7 beta 4, but it should work on all 3.7 versions. It now works board-wide (posts and thread titles), in the archive, and also in the quick post in the profile. If there are any areas you find that this doesn't work in, let me know and I will add the code for that area.

Thanks goes out to KirbyDE for making the first version for 3.5 possible. Without him, I'd STILL be trying to figure out the best way to do this for vB 3.5. Thanks, buddy!

Description:
This will replace the [you] variable (board-wide) with the viewing user's username.

Installation:
1 product xml
(No file edits)

Upload the product xml and you're all set!

Enjoy!

NOTE: If you do not click install, you do not need support.

Say what ?

Where does the [you] variable usual appear and in what context ? I don't think I've encountered it before.

Or if I have , I did not know what I was seeing.

Boofo

If you use it in a post is will replace the code with the viewing user's name.

Example:

Boofo says hi to [you].

This would translate to:

Boofo says hi to SwollenCranium. (if you were reading it)
Boofo says hi to Boofo. (if I was reading it)

and so on...

I purposely left the code show on edit mode so that if you edit a post for another reason, the code doesn't pick up the name of the person who edits if different from the orginal poster. I hope that made sense. ;)

You must have edited the post and saved it with your username in it. Redo it with the tag and that should fix your problem. ;)

great mod, thanks, installed and working as expected.

The only little bug is that if you edit your post via quick edit, you will see [you] again after saving instead of username. If you refresh the page your username will come back

This is normal as that is how ajax works. But anyone viewing the post will never see the [you]. Trust me, I got that all worked out. ;)

Hi there,

I would like to know if it is possible to insert some type of conditional in a plugin, so I restrict the [you] plugins only to one thread
Like this
<if condition="$thread[threadid] == xx">
Use my trick
<else />
dont use it
</if>

maybe this needs a PHP conditional in the shape of
if (!$vbulletin->thread['threadid'] AND $vbulletin->thread['xx']) {
plugin code;
}

Any quick help is appreciated.

Boofo

I suppose I could add a setting for usergroups. But what I did is replace the word you with my own special word that only I know. I might do a setting for that, now that you mention it, so you can chose which word you want it to be. That would make this a lot more configurable. Watch for an update soon. ;)

Any of those setting would be good, but personally I prefer an include rather than exclude option if possible. Better have an option to include the forumids where it can be used. Some may have well over 100 forums and its a pain to type each forumid where they dont want it, whiel they could just add their "Off Topic" or "Jokes" forumid and its all good.

Its still your call though

Val.

Boofo
02-03-2008, 07:43 AM
I'm not sure how to handle that as most people would use it forum-wide. I have the usergroups and you replacement word settings done for it. I had the exclude forums almost done but now I see I'm going to need to find out which way everyone prefers it. I will wait and see what everyone else wants as far as the forum ids and then we'll go with the majority. How does that sound?

valdet
02-03-2008, 09:06 AM
How does that sound? Cool friend, as much as you bring it here i dont mind.

My personal preference was to have an option to limit it within a single thread, but since that seems not possible at the moment, then i guess forumids will work.

The usergroup or forum ID settings wouldn't really work on this, I have come to see. As anyone can use this, those settings would only make for a lot of empty replacement variables throughout the site. You can't stop anyone from actually typing the code in a post. All you can do is stop certain forums or usergroups from seeing the parsed variable, hence the code will show. What I do is use it only for staff and use a word that only I and the staff know. It saves for a lot of headaches and empty code tags throughout the site. I have added the option to change the word form the Admin CP settings in case someone decides to get annoying with this. Although I haven't found the way to stop the code from showing in the notification e-mails yet. I am working on that in between my site crashes. ;)

You will find that this is a lot of fun to play with in the beginning but can get overused and really annoying if you let the wrong people use it.

Boofo
03-04-2008, 01:16 AM
The forumid settings won't work for this hack as users will still be able to enter the code. You would just end up with a lot of posts with the [you] showing it in instead of being parsed. That is why I added the vBulletin setting to change the word you choose to use. Just choose a word that only you and the staff would know. Once the user tries to use it and it doesn't work, that will have the same affect as any forumid settings would. There is no way to stop them from using the code in their posts. Changing the word at the Admin level stops any words from being parsed but what you have chosen. Does that make any sense? ;)

Does this work correctly with the NOPARSE BB-Code?

I read a few pages back about this... Have you fixed the parsing after the AJAX responses (quick-edit & quick-reply)? Moving the plugins to more specific hooks will fix this (i.e. postbit_display_complete for showthread / archive / external / announcements / PMs, visitor_message_display_complete for Visitor Messages, among others). While moving the locations can result in more plugins, the code will only be executed when it is needed rather than on every page.

Boofo
03-18-2008, 06:51 AM
Havew you tested any of that or is that a theory?

thincom2000
03-18-2008, 06:55 AM
I have my own mods that had similar issues and were fixed by using a different hook location. Specifically the bug was not parsing after AJAX. I would have listed all the locations you need to include events and such, but I'm sleepy right now.

Your replacement would have to be made on the $var['message'] rather than $output (where $var is the correct name - $post, $message, etc - it would be $eventinfo['event'] for calendars I think)

Boofo

I have found a major problem with this... it works in usernames...

So now, I have a member (now banned) who's a mirror of whoever views their posts, profile, PMs, etc.

They also always display last on who's online, and just look weird. Seriously, he has the username of the viewer. I think you need to make the next version not parse usernames, and anyone using this needs to ban the [you] code in usernames...

Just warning that someone found out you can use it in usernames and it'll parse as the viewers username. For example, if someone used it here, you'd see their name as Boofo, while everyone else would see their name as their own name.

Installed, but utterly bewildered.

I have no idea what it does. If someone quotes me in a post, it always says my username anyway. As it is a Quote

Am i looking at this from the wrong angle?

Dear Bewildered,

I don't know how else to explain to you what it does. Have you tried using the hack to see what it does?

The only thing I can think is that VBSEO doesnt allow it to display.

Or perhaps you must be in threaded mode.... still dont see what it does.

Can you do a screenie to demonstrate ( someone anyone plz )

VBSEO doesn't affect it whatsoever. There is no way to do a screen shot as all it does is replace the [you] with the username of whoever is viewing it at the time.

Viewing as in the person looking at it.

Sorry mate.

Reason I am replying to this constantly is your mods/hacks are superb. Hence I want to see what this one does.

If it does something, surely a screenpic is possible.

Perhaps, we have other products that conflict with this.. i really dont know.

this is my original hack from back in the v2 days. over the years I had added to it. one of the features I had added was to be able to limit it to specific forums via the forum manager.

Enable / Disable Features
Allow HTML
Allow BB Code
Allow [IMG] Code
Allow [YOU] Code

any plans on doing this for your 3.7 version?

also I had added the ability to use things like [YOU-EMAIL], [YOU-ID], & [YOU-IP]. I'd want to re-implement them but I was recently emailed by a user who pointed out that someone could post a scripted image to return the readers you code info. any suggestions on how I could avoid that? i certainly don't want someone lifting my users email address & ip.

thanks

This is based on that but uses plug-ins now and all new code. ;)

PM me when you have time and we will see what we can come up with. Some of your additions
sound good.

yeah, I'm looking at your code now. it's tiny. very simple. nice

looking at how to do what I want. added the forum option. just gotta make it work with your code. pretty sure i should be able to handle it with a if this script = showthread deal.

thanks

I don't have it working with the email notification yet. Haven't found the right hook to get it work there. PM me when you get the changes made as I would like to look at it, if possible.

tweaked it to check my foruminfo setting but I had to add

global $foruminfo;

to your global_complete plugin. how bad is that? do you think it would effect anything negatively?

the way i have it setup not it does your output replacement if the script is showthread or forumdisplay & enable_youcode is on for that forum. I know you have it on all over the place but for me, I want to limit it down to just the 1 joke forum. having it on everywhere would cause complete chaos on my site. :)

Can you send me what you have when you are finished with it? I want to see how you did it. Did you figure out the email notification?

I just wanted to share with you guys on what happened when I installed this on my community forums at about 4pm yesterday.

I started a topic using the variable and as of right now that topic has close to 1200 views and 129 replies. There are members posting in it that rarely post. It's a kick!!

Thank you.
