Does anyone have tips for how to run a bunch of forums (different domains) more efficiently?

My plan is just to try to keep each install running all the same mods, I suppose. And some sites could have certain ones disabled. Don't know that I would be disciplined enough to go around to each site and do it. Kind of wish I could just symbolic link up many of the core files? But that seems way too messy in a way, and I would be eventually having most on different servers.

You do understand that each domain using a separate database would require a separate license from vBulletin?

Yes, I own 4 licenses so far.

i'm running 3 sites, it would be cool to have a central administration manager, but I doubt that will happen since most sites vary so much from one to the other.

That sounds like a great new Product to write :D I have 4 sites (3 vB + 1 pure php) too and it can take alot of time.

Some kind of cPanel or something that would allow you to push updates and upgrades out to all your sites from one place.

But I dont have any time as I have my hands full already ;)
