View Full Version : Miscellaneous Hacks - Display Unread Posts and New Reputation Comments

This modification is no longer available or supported.
Note: The unread posts portion of this hack only works if you use the database thread marking system, also, this attaches itself to certain phrases in the "welcome" box and will not work if they are not present (or are modified by other code).
FYI, the Forum Marking Choices are located in vBulletin Options ;
vBulletin Options > General Settings > Thread/Forum Read Marking Type
This displays the actual number of posts that are still considered unread by you (and will show up in a 'getnew' search). It also displays the number of new reputation comments since you last checked your usercp.
There is the option to count the unread posts since your last visit, or all posts considered unread. This setting reflects the divider in the 'getnew' search display. There is also the option to disable the unread posts display or the new reputation comments display.
There is also the option to display the New Reputation Comments counter as a Welcome Box Notification.
All settings are located in vBulletin Options > Display Unread Posts and Reputation.
Version 3.7.004 adds the following ;
A forum exclusion list - requested a number of times, an option is provided to exclude forums from the unread count & display.
A time limit on unread posts count - if a member has not visited for more than x days then a simple unread posts link will be displayed, not an actual count, this stops potential large sql queries if you have a busy forum. The option can be disabled.
To install this hack unzip the xml file and import it using the ACP Product Manager.
History:
v3.7.001 : First Release for vb 3.7.
v3.7.002 : Added Notification Display Option for Reputation Comments.
v3.7.003 : Internal version, not released.
v3.7.004 : Added time limit and forum exclusion list.
v3.7.005 : Fixed path bug in welcome box notification.
v3.7.006 : Slight change to accomodate customised navbars still using vb 3.6 code.
v3.7.007 : Fix potential database error if lastrepcheck is blank, rare, but it can happen it seems.

Could something as simple as the fact that it would make the section just one line smaller, and that that type of notification is roughly on the same level as a Private Message, or a Social Group notification be the clincher?
Then there is also the simple bribe of Dr. Pepper if the above fails.:p

There's a small error with the new unread posts feature, which is very cool btw.
It depends on the location my browser is viewing if the search function works or not.
E.g. from the TL home( www.traderslaboratory.com ) it gives me an error, if I am in the
forums section it doesn't ( www.traderslaboratory.com/forums ).
This is because the link is relative, just need to convert it to absolute then everything should be fine. How can I change the path to forums?

I had the 3.6 version of this installed. I upgraded the site to 3.7B4 and it still worked. I thought i may get more functionality out of the one you made here for 3.7 so i loaded it and it took away the unread posts counter on top the welcome box

edit: must be the custom style. it works on default style. what needs to be changed on custom style to fix that, anyone?
edit edit: fixed it, in navbar template the custom style showed a old phrase. i updated with this one

Please do not make unsupported statements. As I have already pointed out, this is working fine on my Test Forum (in the default and all other styles). If you have a specific issue then point it out - just saying "does not work in the default vb style" is both meaningless and wrong.

then choose the second choice..

i have this installed on my board talkdelaware.com and it works GREAT!
my users love it, now i just added news feeds. they want these dis-included from the new post search and the count it shows "X unread posts" in the welcome box.
i have successfully filtered out the right forums on a search by using the "&exclude=48,4,54,55,56,57,58,59,60,61,62,63,64,65,6 6\" on the end of get new.
is there a way to get the "X unread post" to be filtered as well?
now it will show like "20 unread posts" and when you click the search it will return nothing as the actual search is filtered.
does that make sense?

ok i found this in the 3.6 thread for this mod. i want to exclude a userid from the new post counts. how do i do it with this mod?
Everyone keeps asking if they can exclude forums, well, that's a different table in vBulletin. What I did is remove a user. I my case this is an RSS bot. So here's what I did.

I added the bold text. The userid is my RSS poster bot userid. You can exclude any of the following by changing my "userid" to one on the list below and my "13476" to whatever floats your boat.
I don't recommend anyone do this unless you know what your doing!
I'm only showing you the query used and possibilities to tweak it and the only reason I'm doing that is because Paul M has stated he's not adding any features to this kick ass mod.

Is there any way to display the New Posts reading separately from the Welcome block? I very much like it there; but I'd also like to add it to various locations on custom forum pages -- e.g. we have a 'welcome page' that displays a quotation, and where I used the old Show New Posts hack to paste in the HTML code so that the reading would show.
How can I display this hack's readout elsewhere via HTML in templates?

I have a question about the unread posts. I have 3 sites I'm administering at the moment, one upgraded from 3.6.8 and unread posts works OK, the other two it was installed into new 3.7 sites, and one site doesn't shot it only for me, and the other site has the line in the welcome box but it is missing the number of posts in front of the unread posts link.
Any ideas what I should be checking to fix this issue? Thanks!

Paul, the mod itself works wonderfully, but with it installed, if I click on any user's name, rather than the user's profile, I see:

Sorry, but thats an error on the member_complete hook which is not used by this mod. Your problem is elsewhere.

But this isn't like the old addon where users could choose which forums to block and not to block.

I overwrite with the 3.6 version of new rep + comm and it didnt go thru, gave an error.
(yea it was my mistake, shouldve installed the 3.7 duhhh :confused:)
SO I removed off the ftp, uninstalled it and thats when I got the database error.
I installed the NEW version of your hack, installed fine and BANG got an error again.
so I went back and DISABLED this product and the MYSQL error went away immediatly.

Hmm. Well, I upgraded my forum to 7.0 last night and I'm having trouble getting this new version to work for me. It shows the "unread posts" portion, but not the reputation part.
I previously had your 6x version installed (loved it btw), upgraded forum to 3.7.0, uninstalled 6x version in the product manager, installed the new one successfully, but I can only get the "unread posts" part to show up. Everything seemed to go perfectly, no errors.
During the forum upgrade, and before the mod install, I reverted back all templates and I just verified they are unaltered and up to date.
It almost seems to me like it just needs to be turned on, but I verified in vB Options that the bullet for "display new reputation comments" is set to yes.
I saw your warning:
Note that this attaches itself to certain phrases in the "welcome" box and therefore will not work if they are not present (or are modified by other code). and that seems like it might apply to me but, as far as I can tell, the templates are fresh and untouched.
Any idea what could be wrong?

Well... I found out something but it doesn't work correctly.
When I am selecting "Use Last Visit Date" displays "No Unread Posts since your last visit." so far so good...
When I am selecting "Count All Posts Marked as Unread" displays "Display Unread Posts" even if I have or not unread Posts.
Shouldn't display ... You Have <strong>No <a href="{1}search.php?do=getnew{2}">Unread Posts</a></strong> If I have no unread posts and

Actually I wasnt sure what you meant to start with, but now I've read it again I see.
This will happen if you use the "Count All Posts Marked as Unread" option, and you have set your "Database Read Marking Limit" higher than the "Maximum Cutoff Limit" in this mod. The cutoff needs to be equal to or greater than the marking limit.

that is the site name. When I turn the unread post count on it leaves the new post blank.
The rep part works and I can get the unread post to work but then the new post is off. Not sure what is wrong there so I have the unread post turned off at the moment.

Okay, so if I set the new reputation comment to be normal, legacy mode, it works fine.
However, if I set it to be like a notification, when clicking it, it doesn't work. It doesn't add the /forums/ inbetween my URL and usercp.php, like it does when it's not a notification.
Any thoughts?

I dont understand what you mean by that.
When I turn the unread post on then under the New Post link on the navabar will remove the post after you read it. When I have the unread post turned off the new post link acts more like todays post. I'm hoping that it making some since. This was not a problem with 3.6 version and is now with the 3.7 version for me. When it was cookie based it was what everyone liked. It has to be something that I'm missing and I don't know what it is.

Actually I wasnt sure what you meant to start with, but now I've read it again I see.
This will happen if you use the "Count All Posts Marked as Unread" option, and you have set your "Database Read Marking Limit" higher than the "Maximum Cutoff Limit" in this mod. The cutoff needs to be equal to or greater than the marking limit.

When there actually is new reputation, the link doesn't work. However, if there is no new reputation (but some other new notification), the link works from the dropdown.

It was a small bug in the notification code, it wasnt applying the links path. Fixed in 3.7.005.

I have this installed and it works great, but I'm having an issue on my site with "database errors" that the host is saying is caused by too many queries at once... so I'm trying to track that down.
Does this modification add to the queries significantly?

Ask your host what they mean exactly by "too many queries" - and what exactly are the database errors you get.
This adds one select query for each function (unread posts, rep comments).

Is there no way manually edit the navbar template to include this? I have a custom style which this mod does not seem to like and does not display.

This is a php error, your allowed (php) memory size seems very small, you need to increase it.

You need to right click on the page and view the source, that will show you the real error. TBH, it sounds like you need a new host.

the unread portion works great for me...
...the notification part not so much....
...what I get is a generic "Your notifications: ##" with a drop down arrow next to it...
...the drop down doesn't do anything on click and the link doesn't click over even though the status bar shows it pointing to the UserCP...
...is it supposed to differentiate between new PMs and rep points?

Hello,
I have vers. 3.7.005 into my vB 3.7.0 installs, it is shown to nothing in the navbar, though.
Of vB 3.6.7 ( here the old add On still worked after the update) on vB 3.7.0, the Template navbar still is not revised completely. Perhaps it is due to it?
Would be possible for me there to be the code for the unread Posts which displays these, you revise to the Template completely so that I can manually install it in the right place?

There are no template modifications for this - as the big note says, it attaches itself to certain phrases (which have changed between 3.6 and 3.7, so if you have a customised navbar, you may need to revert/re-edit it).

Sorry but I have no intention of doing that, on anything except the most quiet of forums you would always have a notification. I also like it to be visible without having to click on anything.
That makes sense. I thought since reputation comments is optional from within the admin cp 'latest unread posts' may also be there. Most users click on 'latest posts' in the navbar anyway. Thanks for the mod.

Having investigated another forum having problems I came across the same common problem as a number of others Ive looked at.
The unread posts portion of this modification attaches itself to a phrase in the Navbar template that is only found in vb 3.7 - if you have a customised navbar that is based on pre 3.7 code then this will not display the unread posts.
Since this is the cause of a number of reports in this thread Im going to look at modifying it slightly to try and detect if you using pre 3.7 code and adjust itself acordingly.

Check that you are using database marking, and all the mod settings are correct - after that you would need to start looking at things like another mod breaking it.

I take it that by new version you mean the 3.7 version because this could never have worked with that mod installed - the reason being that Boofo appears to completely remove the welcome_x_link_y phrase from the navbar.

Odd. After removing the old 3.6 version and installing this new version, I'm getting database errors sent to my email account. Apparently some users have having problems viewing the forum and others (like myself) have no issues. Here's the email message:

Uninstall it, and then re-install it. You are missing some values in a column.
JFYI, that column should never be missing data, but this isnt the first case, so I'm going to edit the code slightly to stop the error when that data is missing.

How big do you mean ? This adds a column to the user table, and in index to the post table - thats the only difference it will make to your database.

In your old hack, i was able to see 'New Post' rather than 'Unread Posts'
New Posts will show all new posts (read and unread) <--- this is what i want to see...
Unread Posts only shows the unread post (duhh!)

I'm having an issue that the new rep notification is not showing on my admin account on my board. Unread posts is working though, and for my registered members it is all working.

I'm having an issue that the new rep notification is not showing on my admin account on my board. Unread posts is working though, and for my registered members it is all working.
Any idea?
PS I've upgraded to lastest release and didn't make any difference.
And I realised I hadn't marked as installed - which I've rectified :D

Are you sure your admin account is set to display reputation (its a user option).

It was set to "no", but I hadn't realised as I could still always see my reputation on my posts :confused:
I've managed to change it now... after the trauma of finding I was an unalterable user.
Will see if it's sorted now. Thank you Paul.

Great mod.. I am having a couple members say that for ex it shows "5 new posts since your last visit" and when they click the link it doesn't show any or shows 1 or 2. I figured it might be due to the mod section posts? However if I exclude them, then it will affect the count the mods see. If it's not due to the mod sections, can someone point me as to what the cause might be?

Ah, perhaps it is moderated threads (spambot). I wasn't online when they quoted the number, though I can try it through a test account.

Hello--I went through all my hacks and disabled them because the calendar.php on my site was drawing a blank page.
Disabled this one and it came back. I did not have a problem with it before I ugraded, any chance there is a solve?
I have version 3.7.007 loaded.

There is no chance unless you can give me repeatable steps to create the issue as my calendar works fine.

I'm sure it does Paul, I certainly didn't mean to offend.
Basically, I upgraded to 3.7 and then made an effort to upgrade all my hacks. All seemed perfectly fine until someone mentioned to me that the default calendar for the board was drawing a blank page.
So I began turning them off one by one and testing it. The default board calendar would not come up until I got to the unread posts hack. I realize there is probably nothing wrong with your hack, just that they may conflict somehow...not sure. I could be crazy. LOL

My members are going crazy without the "unread posts" modification so I'm putting it back on no matter what, calendar or no.

Just so everyone knows, my problem with the calendar was not Paul's hack. The fact that it worked after the disable was a total coincidence.

Installed this hack and upgraded the previous one. Works well except there seems to be a small change. In the previous edition when you viewed an unread post it left in the unread post section, just not bolded.
Is there anyway to go to having the unread post stay in the unread section instead of disappearing after it is clicked?

Paul, thank you for this plugin. It works very well.
Could you make an option whereas the admin could choose to display the number of posts and threads? The display could be something like, "x new posts in y threads".
Seeing both numbers gives a better sense of what kind of unread monstrosity you have awaiting you when there's been a particularly active time since your last visit.

I have this installed on 3 of my forums, and one of them is a new forum. I am having issues with the Unread Posts link working on my vBa CMPS hompage. The Unread Posts link works fine on the forums page, but not the CMPS page. How do I correct this issue?

As per earlier messages in this thread...
vBulletin Options -> Display Unread Posts and Reputation -> Links Prefix Path
You need to enter the path from your homepage to your forum, with a trailing slash.
For instance, I use, "/forum/".

thanks! I solved the other issue, but now I am having another issue.
Every time any of the members or I visit the forums our unread posts says No Unread Posts. When I click on unread posts there are some listed, but they are listed as if I have already visited the site. In other words above the unread posts list of posts it says:
The threads below have not been updated since your last visit but still contain unread posts.
How do I fix this? It is only happening on one of 3 forums that I have. I am afraid it is affecting the activity on my site.

vBulletin Options -> Display Unread Posts and Reputation -> Display Unread Posts Option
It should be set to "Count All Posts Marked as Unread".

It should be displaying read and unread posts.
