vbF Journal
Article Publishing Module
by

1.- Credit goes to:

MicroHellas, as this module has developed by her.
Olympic, for his corrections to secure this module according to vB's standards.
2.- General information
This module is mainly for use for Article posting with 1 photo. Unlike vbNews and vbArticles which are using 3nd party HTML editor, vbJurnal uses vB's Editor.
Editors choice Articles
Breaking Articles
Important Articles
RSS per category
Newest Articles by category
Most Active Authors (according to the number of post Articles)
All these blocks can be turn off in case that you don't need them, by setting 0 as the number of appearing articles
All these blocks are following the active category. eg Breaking news in main page shows articles from all categories. Breaking news while you're in X category shows breaking news from X category only.3.- Installation
Open vbjournal.php file with a text editor like notepad. At line 9 you'll find a variable: $mydateformat = 'm/d/Y'; This is set to default US date format. You can change it according to your country's setting eg. for UK d/m/Y or for other European countries to d.m.Y or d-m-Y. You can also add the time if you want. eg 'd/m/Y H:ia' this will give 20/8/2007 14:15pm. The reason that I didn't used the internal vbdate function is because that some users from Scandinavian countries, Spain and France had problems with vbdate().
Upload the contains of /forum directory to the same directory where you've installed vBulletin. Please note that if you've another vbF module already installed, you'll get a message for file "loading.gif" that already exists. Don't worry. You can skip or overwrite it as it's the same image.
CMOD following directories to 777
/photos (inside vbjournal directory)
/tmp (inside vbjournal directory)
/thumbs (inside vbjournal/photos directory)
For security reasons backup your database AND turn your board off
Check at your AdminCP->vBulletin Options->Plugin/Hook System that Plugin system is enabled.
From your AdminCP->Plugin System->Manage Products choose Add/Import Product and import the product: product_vbjournal.xml
If you want to add a link to your nav bar then you must edit the NAVBAR template:
Search For: <td class="vbmenu_control"><a href="calendar.php$session[sessionurl_q]">$vbphrase[calendar]</a></td>
Add Below: <td class="vbmenu_control"><a href="vbjournal.php$session[sessionurl_q]">Journal</a></td> ....or use any other word you want.
By default none usergroup has permissions to use vbjournal, so you need to give permissions to any group. Goto AdminCP->Usergroups->Usergroup Manager and edit any usergroup you like to give permissions.
In your adminCP, under vbJournal, choose vbJournal options and configure it depending on your needs. If you can't see vbJournal's menu, press F5 to refresh the page, or logout and login again to your admincp.
Now, you can access vbJournal at: www.youdomain.com/vb_installation/vbjournal.php (http://www.youdomain.com/vb_installation/vbjournal.php)4.- Copyright

script and sharing or publishing your modification A-N-Y-W-H-E-R-E (including here)without the author's written permission is not allowed, but you can modify it as you want but just for your own use.

In addition to above restrictions you can't develop and share addons for 3nd party scripts (eg for vBadvanced).

I installed it and everything seems fine. Only problem is I can only have one picture for my articles...

If I create a new article and give it it's own image, all other articles made before that one will get that one's article image as well..

What could be causing this?

Would the Attachment options be scewing it up? (I've turned them off and set the size of attachments to be really low.)

Later today we'll post an upgrade which will add a photo gallery per article.

This happen once in another of my mods (vbPhotoVote). For some unknow reason your PHP can't give the random name according to our function, so it gives to all uploaded files the same filename.
We'll check it again.

Well what I meant about the "one image" was about the whole "all images are the same image" problem. Not necessarily that I wanted more images in a single article. I think it's ok the way it is (with just one pic per article) but it would be a plus to have more :)

But yeah, my whole post was about all articles having the same image :p

Thanks for the answer :) Hope a fix is made for this for people like me :p

You're the only one having this problem for 100+ installation (this mod was under Mary's name before), but be sure that we try to correct even single incompatibilities.

Since this was restore has the problem been fixed?

The problem has been fixed and the updated file has been uploaded in less than 2 hours. After it, the delay was due to checing by staff. So the file is ok.

Hello,

A new version (1.3.0) of vbJournal is available for download. In this version:
A bug which was appearing by removing the article's photo when you're editing the article, has been fixed.
Added feature. Now every article can has a photo gallery and not just a photo.
Code correction. It appeared in one installation that every photo upload was taking the same filename, so we change the way that the files are naming.How to upgrade:
Upload file: vbjournal.php in your vB installation directory.
Import product-vbjournal.xml from your admincp. Don't forget to check "Overwite" option.Of course is always wise to backup the table XXXX_vbjournal_articles before upgrade.

Thank you so much! Works great now! :)

One question though... Aren't images in the "Breaking News" section supposed to be scaled down? Mine stay the same size as the originals. They are scaled down in the right side column though.

Small thing but I was just wondering (don't remember if they were before or not). :) A great mod :)

I checked the template: vbjournal_breakingarticlebit and it's correct as it's shows the thumb and not the full photo.
Could you please check at your admincp vbJournal->Options what's the setting for thumb width? The default is 150px

I found the bug:D As I copied the code for image manipulation from another mod, in 3 instances I forgot to rename vbjengine to vbjournal, so the mod was trying to find settings from vbFEngine:eek:. I apologize for my novice mistake. Please upload the attach file.

Oh wow works great now! :D

Great support and work :) Nominated this Mod for Mod of the Month :)

I was about to post an issue I was having where uploaded images looked a bit "uglier" (lower quality) after I uploaded them. But that fixed it! :) (Also of course fixed the "images not resizing" issue of course :))

Thank you so very much and I look forward to any new updates you have planned :)

Just checking. In the screenshot above, 'Breaking News' is actually 'Latest News'? Am I right?

And can the 'Member Menu' be invisible to registered user? I only want Moderators and Admins to be able to post something.

There is seperate block "Newest News". Breaking News and Important News, are articles marked as "Breaking" or "Importants", from those who have permissions to Moderate.

And can the 'Member Menu' be invisible to registered user? I only want Moderators and Admins to be able to post something.

Each menu option is visible only to those who have permissions for that action. If all options are "Off" for the current user, then the whole block is invisible. This is the way that as I remember it works. But even if it's not, you can easily do it as you like by adding in the template:

<if condition="$permissions[vbjournal] & $vbulletin->bf_ugp[vbjournal][canmod]">
....
</if>

By the way, the screenshot looks similar to the vBnews version, What are the differences between the two?

Just the screenshoot it's similar. vbNews has 10x features than vbJournal. Some of them:

Uses HTML Editor and not vbEditor. This has plus and minus. Everything is depending on admin's needs.
Has subcategories
Supports Attahcments, Chapters and/or Pagination for long articles like books or Tutorials
and others that really I can't remember right now. Don't forget that it's not a mod that I developed, so I can't remember it's features.But everything is depending on your special needs. For example I'm designing our new site based on vbFJournal. I don't need subcategories, I don't need chapters etc etc.

Only if you modify with phpMyAdimn the field description in table TABLE_PREFIX ."vbjournal_articles from varchar to mediumtext

When you click on a category like vbjournal.php?do=category&categoryid=2 if u look at the left column the categories are not populating the table. I glanced at the code and didn't see what was wrong.

Nothing is wrong with the code there. I just let it as is planing to add subcategories there.

well on other pages my categories list in the left side but not on that particular page for some reason, thats why I asked about it. As you can see that on one page the cats are listed and in the other they aren't.

Yes, that's correct. As I seen the 2nd screenshoot is the list of articles from category xxx. As there are no subcategories there, it shows nothing. This block in a furture upgrade will populate with the list of subcategories. You must use the link in NavBar to go back.
But if you need this block populated with categories again, I can modify the code. It's trivial.

hmm i didnt see much of a difference in the code other than
the sql call for $_REQUEST['do'] == 'main' is below

$categories_get = $vbulletin->db->query_read("

SELECT *

FROM " . TABLE_PREFIX . "vbjournal_categories

ORDER BY display ASC

");

while ($category = $vbulletin->db->fetch_array($categories_get)){

$totalcats ++;

eval('$categories .= "' . fetch_template('vbjournal_categorybit') . '";');

eval('$vcategories .= "' . fetch_template('vbjournal_vcategorybit') . '";');

}

the one for $_REQUEST['do'] == 'category'

$categories_get = $vbulletin->db->query_read("

SELECT *

FROM " . TABLE_PREFIX . "vbjournal_categories

ORDER BY display ASC

");

while ($category = $vbulletin->db->fetch_array($categories_get)){

$totalcats ++;

eval('$vcategories .= "' . fetch_template('vbjournal_vcategorybit') . '";');

}

I must be looking at the wrong spot or something can you tell me what to edit for the time being until the sub cats are integrated? That would be great

For some reason if I have a breaking article, on the main page the no photo is not showing. I changed a line in the template vbjournal_breakingarticlebit and the line

<if condition="$breakingarticle[photo]<>''">

to

<if condition="$breakingarticle[photo]>'0'">

and now the image shows...

Sure you didn't found any difference in the code, as the difference is not there. To resolve it is much more easier than you can imagine. Just open template: sitenews_categorylisting. 24 lines from the begining you'll see:

<table width="100%" cellspacing="2" cellpadding="2">
</table>

Then just enter between 2 lines: $vcategories

Save it and the categories will appear.

Is it possible to add video (from Youtube and/or Brightcove) instead of an image and have it display a thumbnail of the video on main pages?

I would be willing to pay for such a modification.

If you mean on article's main photo, no, currently you can't. But as I know there is a plugin to add YouTUBE video in vB's editor.

Thank you for this addon but can I ask one question please? :)

When creating an article the editor only gives me the option to upload one picture at a time :( this is a pain when you want to upload a few picture because you have to add 1 and save then edit and add one and save then edit and so on for each picture :(

Now is this just me and my settings or is it just how you have to do it?

Thanks for any help given

Is there support for this add on any more? I have this version installed and love the look of it :) only trouble is it lacks functionality :( Would be willing to pay for a pro version of Vbjournal but you don't seem to have one.
I have the full version of vbarticles and while this has the extras I want like "rate and comment" and "search articles" it does not look as nice as vbjournal :(

Please tell me there will be an upgrade

Can some help me here !

I just installed the vbjournal which is a very nice mod. However, I get blank page screens on my admincp for 'categories' and 'add category'. The vbJournal Options is OK. The front end is ok and working but the back end is just black fr those two sections.

I tired looking in the code in the vbJournal_admin in the admincp folder downloaded. But the problem still exist.

I am still using vb 3.6.8 and php4. All my files point to php4 (which I update whenever I download a new mod by adding the '4' to the relevant files).
Below is the attached code for vbJournal_admin downloaded.

Any help is appreciated
