Forum growing some questions regarding hosting

Im on hostgator which are great on a shared plan but read too many posts that too many members online at once they shut down your site. My forum has grown to having about 15-25 members online at once throughout different times during the day. Just so my mind is at ease Im thinking about going to a vps. What would be a good amount of ram to go with? I got my eyes on RealWebHost.net read good things about them. Do you guys thing 512 mb ram would be good to handle that amount of members for the time being? Or do I need to look at more things aswell. I definately dont need to go dedicated yet which is the main reason why I want leave hostgator they offer only shared and dedicated. I also have some heavy mods like photoplog, arcade, vbplaza and so on. A lot of attachments ect...

I just switched to hostgator on a shared server and I have about 40+ members online at times and never have any problems.

Greek76, I found that 768mb VPS helped bridge the gap from having 20 users online to 50 users. 256 was not workable at all and even 512 started to crash under my max load. If it's 512mb and burstable to 756 you'll probably be okay for a while. Try to find someone that will let you upgade your VPS easily to at least 768MB.

I used A Small Orange for VPS and was not happy. They're shared hosting is excellent but their VPS was too limited for the price. Now I'm on a dedicated box at Liquid Web and couldn't be happier. Their support is excellent and I have so much more power than I need. It leads to a lot of peace of mind.

i am in the same boat. i am on godaddy.. i need help.. i was going to try jokerwebhosting but the number on the website was to some old lady.. all they have is email support no phone. to me i think its giving your money to a blackhole.. if the site went down i would be screwed

normally shared hosts have around 25 concurrent mysql connections. that for instant is able to allow up around 100 or more "online users". i also believe hostgator even allow more.

I used to have a vps with servint it had 256mb I had 2 forums 1 with an average of 50 users on at any one time, I also had 1 ecommerce site running cs-cart and about another 20 other static sites, I never had a problem with it, you just need to spend some time reading up about optimising it, I'm still with www.servint.net only I have a deuce now because I host a lot more sites, but the backup and tech support you get from servint is second to none, give them a go you won't be sorry.

I just moved to them on a server and so far its pretty good, support is awesome.
