Now that we have notifications, I have modified my previous New PM hack to go along with the new setup. This will display when ever there is a new PM or Notification to grab the users attention.
In the navbar template find:
<if condition="$show['pmwarning']"><div><strong><phrase 1="$vbphrase[pmpercent_nav_compiled]">$vbphrase[your_pm_box_is_x_full]</phrase></strong></div></if>
</div>
</td>
Add this right under:
<if condition="$show['notifications']">
<td class="alt2" valign="top" nowrap="nowrap">
<img src="$stylevar[imgdir_misc]/notification.jpg" alt="You have a new Notification" border="0"></a>
</td>
</if>
Upload the attached "notification.jpg" to your /images/misc directory
~Please click Install if you use this~

I was hoping it wasn't that ...
Yeah, it's sort of hard to notice that it's separated from the screenshot.

Thanks, I was waiting for this to be released since vbulletin changed there minds in doing it.
Question tho, when a user has no pms, or no notifications, what is displayed then? (hopefully something is still displayed. Thanks.

It's based on a condition that you have a notification, so if there are no notifications it doesn't display anything, just the default. :)

I changed the image into a flashing gif image and used that instead as it makes the user more aware of the notification.

that flash is awesome...
I also have added the <a href="http://www.yourforum.com/private.php"> before the image..so they can click the image and it opens the private message page.

Unfortunately that link will not be valid if there is a different notification.
A Profile visitor message for example. ;)

What I have done is just linked it to my User CP. It will display any new notification items all in one place.

Nice Mod.
I was tempted to put that monkey avatar as the image on the left side!

Great Thanks.... :)
Could you edit this to display an Image when their is no notifications, and then display another when their is?
I would like to use a mail box Image.... when no notifications its just normal... but when their is a notification the flag is displayed....
I have used a Gif file for now with the popup flag when their is a notification...
But would look great if i could have the mail box all the time.
Thanks

Thanks. Is there any way to link this image so it has a drop-down of all the notifications, like the "Your Notifications" link? Here is the image I made for this; feel free to use it yourself. :)
Thanks.

Just do this Derek:
<if condition="$show['notifications']">
<td class="alt2" valign="top" nowrap="nowrap">
<img src="$stylevar[imgdir_misc]/notification.jpg" alt="You have a new Notification" border="0" /> </a>
<else />
<img src="$stylevar[imgdir_misc]/nonotification.jpg" alt="You have no new notifications" border="0" />
</td>
</if>
If there is a new notification, it will display the notification.jpg. If there isn't, it will display the nonotification.jpg.

Try:
<if condition="$show['notifications']">
<td class="alt2" valign="right" nowrap="nowrap">
<img src="$stylevar[imgdir_misc]/notification.jpg" alt="You have a new Notification" border="0" /> </a>
<else />
<img src="$stylevar[imgdir_misc]/nonotification.jpg" alt="You have no new notifications" border="0" />
</td>
</if>

Nope still in the same place.....
Sorry, this should fix it:
<td class="alt2" valign="top" nowrap="nowrap">
<if condition="$show['notifications']">
<img src="$stylevar[imgdir_misc]/notification.jpg" alt="You have a new Notification" border="0" /> </a>
<else />
<img src="$stylevar[imgdir_misc]/nonotification.jpg" alt="You have no new notifications" border="0" />
</if>
</td>
I was in a hurry and only had the td showing if there was a notification.

Thank you have installed...this is so cute....I really wanted to use your avatar for the notification image. (I think that image is so cute for this) is there away to move the image to the left of the notification box rather then to the right? (I am not handy dandy with code so I don't want to play to much....I did try valign=left but that doesn't work) can you tell me an easy solution?
Thanks aj8690 for your image, as I am using that one right now and it works perfect

Hey there, Ericgtr.
Thank you for a great little mode. I love it and I desperately want to use it but can I get it to work? Can I cocoa. I am using a custom skin and would have to use this in part of the side bar. I think it has to go in here somewhere, with a little editing, but what ever I do and however I try, I break the design. My image is 26x26 pixels. I've attached it, it's one I made so if anyone wants it - feel free. :)
<div class="lbh">Quick Member Login:</div>
<div class="lb">
<if condition="$show['member']">
<div class="smallfont">
<span class="lbi"><phrase 1="$bbuserinfo[username]">$vbphrase[welcome_x]</phrase></span><br />
<phrase 1="$pmbox[lastvisitdate]" 2="$pmbox[lastvisittime]">$vbphrase[last_visited_x_at_y]</phrase><br />
<if condition="$show['pmstats']"><br /><phrase 1="$vbphrase[unread_x_nav_compiled]" 2="$vbphrase[total_x_nav_compiled]" 3="$session[sessionurl_q]">$vbphrase[private_messages_nav]</phrase><br></if>
<if condition="$show['pmwarning']"><br /><strong><phrase 1="$vbphrase[pmpercent_nav_compiled]">$vbphrase[your_pm_box_is_x_full]</phrase></strong></if>
</div>
<else />
Any ideas of how I could include this? I don't mind it being at the top or on a seperate line. Here's a screen shot of where it should go. And all this is part of the header template.

I fixed it! I had to use this:
<!----Notification warning icon---->
<if condition="$show['notifications']">
<img src="$stylevar[imgdir_misc]/notification.gif" alt="You have a new Notification" border="0"></a>
</if>
<!---- / Notification icon---->
But I had left a </td> in there and that broke the design. D'oh!!

I was forced to un install this, 2 hours for what seems simple, yet the only thing that shows up is you have new mail where the jpg should be. I have a new style and don't know if that may cause the issue or not. I put the jpg as directed and a few other places as well and it will not show up. oh well, I am glad others got it to work though. Tks for the mod for those who can use it.

I am using this on 3.8, and it seems to work great, apart from I cant get it to show the icon if there is just a new private message?
Works great with noifications, even with the extra code to display a different icon when there is no notifications, which is what it does with ne PMs.
Have I messed it up or missed something??

can someone make this for vb4 ????
ericgtr
02-18-2010, 07:41 PM
I think someone already has, you may want to search around for it. I didn't recreate it for 4.0 because it's so easy to modify the stylevar to stick out like a sore thumb when there is a new notification.
You can easily do this by going to your stylevars and under "Navbar" look for "Navbar Background Notification" and change the color to something different. I changed mine to red and now anytime there is a new notification it will automatically change.
