Exciting Announcement! vBulletin 3.7.0 now includes a built in Welcome Headers System (named "Notices") that easily allows you to add and control your own welcome messages with functionality above what can be found in the traditional welcome headers system. There are some important differences in these systems so please read this thread before upgrading.

-----------------------

Important: If you are upgrading from the 3.6 or earlier versions and have modified the navbar template you will either need to revert it or add new vBulletin code as shown in https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=1528380&postcount=152.

Out of the box, your forum isn't personalized to assist or address your visitors. As a result, guests entering on a page other than the homepage (which is most often the case) have no idea what to do or why to register. Additionally, there are no visible status indicators, making it confusing for unconfirmed, unapproved or new members to know what to do or where to begin. But with a little customization, the use of the vBulletin Notices System and Welcome Headers, you can solve these issues in just a few minutes.

What is Welcome Headers?

Welcome Headers is a set of predefined messages and rules designed to help you get started in personalizing your site's notices using the vBulletin notice feature. The default templates are just that, default ? I highly encourage you to modify and add to the language and rules to meet the needs of your actual community environment.

Modifications/ Instructions:

Plugins: 1 (notices entries, rules and phrases)
This template hack should take under 5 minutes to implement and customize.

Installation/ Upgrade Instructions

1 ? Backup any existing welcome header messages (upgrading)
2 ? Remove the default welcome header from your forum home template (new installs)
3 ? Install the attached plugin file
4 ? Now Required: Customize the messages to include your site's name

For detailed instructions on each step please view the install.html file included with this addon.

Support

Please post any enhancement or technical questions you may have and I will do my best to respond in a timely manner. Please note: I can not guarantee an immediate response and am unable to assist with integrating this addon with other addons or with HTML related questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please see the second post in the thread for a list of frequently asked questions which is updated periodically.

Older Version Support

While most users are choosing to upgrade to the notices system, there are some advantages to the "old" system mainly in that it does not rely on a rules system and can be configured as designed with code changes. Additionally, the "old" version has automatic interfacing with several other addons which the notices system does not. For this reason, the old version is still supported and remains fully compatible with 3.7.

The History of Welcome Headers

Welcome Headers started out as a method of displaying messages to visitors based on their status. After more than 3 years and thousands of installations, vBulletin has added a native feature that allows for the creation and customization of welcome messages out of the box. As a result, Welcome Headers has migrated from a system of displaying messages to a set of default, suggestion messages that are intended to be used to help get forums started on personalizing their experiences.

Even with the new Notices system, the purpose of Welcome Headers remains the same – to help forum owners with limited experience in personalization and marketing to improve their forum’s experience. The messages and the system are only meant as a stepping stone – what you do with them is entirely up to you.

Details on how it all works:

As an enterprise forum consultant, I developed Welcome Headers for a handful of select sites in order to encourage more registrations and repeat visits. From there they grew to help address the needs of returning visitors and users who were having difficult registering, not sure where to post and so forth. Eventually based on continued requests the system was developed for public use and launched as an addon/hack over 3 years ago.

Step One: Turning lurkers into Members
For most forums, upwards of 50% of traffic comes through search engines or deep links to threads, profiles and categories. Out of the box, vBulletin only displays a welcome message on the forum-homepage, meaning someone who enters through any other page does not have the benefit of seeing an explanation of the site or welcome message. The guest welcome header is used to explain the purpose of your site, sell users on the benefits of joining the community and push them to proactively register.

Step Two: Making Users Confirm their Account
Many vBulletin sites require email confirmation prior to being able to post or access an account. However, activation emails are often misdirected to spam folders, ignored or simply deleted, leaving unconfirmed users with little access rights and no explanation as to what is wrong with their account. The unconfirmed welcome header is used to inform unconfirmed members of their account status and to direct them to automatically resend their activation email, or to contact the webmaster for support.

Step Three: Get non-posting users to post
Another chronic problem faced by many forums is insuring users post after registering. Many new visitors register in order to access certain features with the intent of posting, but never do so. The never posted welcome header is used to encourage users to post for their first time and should ideally be linked directly to an introductions or new member forum to help users "break the ice".

Step Four: Getting inactive users to become more active
Many members start out as lurkers, register, post once or twice and then go back to being lurkers. Often time these members are not actively thinking about participating in topics or are still shy about interacting. The inactivity welcome header reminds members to make a post after a predetermined amount of time as specified by the forum administrator.

Step Five: General Announcements
Unfortunately the standard announcements are often overlooked or never even seen by members who use the "new posts feature". As a result, urgent notices may be missed by users causing problems and high volumes of support requests. The global announcement welcome header creates a message shown to all members who do not fall into the other welcome header groups (guest, unconfirmed, never posted, inactive). Whether it be a scheduled outage/ upgrade, an important request or the need to display an advertisement in a prominent spot, global announcements allow an administrator to effectively and quickly display messages in a way that is certain to be read.

Optional: One-View Messages
Some forums find that users grow tired of seeing the messages thus there is an option to show the welcome messages only once per browser session as determined by using a cookie.

Optional: Custom Messages
Welcome Headers addresses 5 common needs, your forum probably has more. I highly encourage you to add messages based on profile fields, user states and other criteria that may impact your users.

The results:
At first glance this system may seem a bit superfluous, however, the numbers rarely lie, nor does the feedback. On ScubaBoard.Com, the site the system was originally tested on, posting rates increased by over 100%; new user registration rates by over 60%; user activity by 50% and the welcome/ intro & greets forum has exploded over 400%. If you browse through the pages of this thread you will find even more real life testimonials and experiences from the thousands of people using the system.

vbSEO Add-ons
Some forums have found that after adding welcome headers, the welcome message shows up in their search descriptions. To address this issue, user's at vbSEO have recommended turning the guest welcome header into an image -- this way there's no duplicate content for the bots to spider. To learn more click here (http://www.vbseo.com/f28/how-make-your-welcome-headers-image-7549/). My recommendation is that you test this option if you are allowing bots to spider your front-end pages.

Limited Guest Viewing compatibility
If you are concerned about messages overlapping, use welcome headers version 3.6.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the old welcome headers system work on 3.7.0?

Yes. You can continue to use the existing welcome headers system with no changes required.

Will my I see my existing customized messages if I upgrade to the new version?

No. Since the addon now makes use of the Notices feature, any old customizations you may have made will no longer appear. You can however copy and paste all of your custom messages into the new notices system.

How can I customize my welcome messages / notices?

Messages can be customized (including changing the rulesets and orders) by visiting the “Notices” tab in your ACP. Each messages is labeled clearly to make it easy to identify.

Now that there is a notices system, why should I use the welcome headers addon?

With the launch of the Notices system, Welcome Headers may seem to be obsolete and in fact, the code that has been used on thousands of forums for over 3 years is no longer being offered in the latest system. Instead Welcome Headers has migrated from a coding addon to a set of default messages and business rules intended to help you customize your system. If you already have your own rules and messages there may not be a reason for you to use welcome headers but for sites use to the welcome headers systems, it’s still a simple and easy way to get started.

Are there any limitations to the Notices system that would make me want to use the old welcome headers instead?

There are a few reasons to use the old welcome headers although they are possible to address with some logic and/or code.

First and perhaps most importantly, the Notices system only allows one condition per rule set. What does this mean? You can’t exclude a message from both Guests and Unregistered Members. The solution to this is often to just rethink your ruleset using something like “Has Posted” (guests can’t post) but occasionally you may find the conditions limiting.

Second, each of your messages will appear inside the same template file. With some customization and conditionals this can be tweaked around but out of the box, your messages will follow the same general outline making them consistent. This means if you are using an image for your guest message, you would need to take extra steps to make your other messages display properly. The solution to this is to remove all HTML from the notices template and customize the layout directly through the notice body; this way you can have entirely different styles for different messages.

Last off, the Notices system has a limited number of predefiend variables (which makes sense as it's intended for your direct use, not a third party message). As such, any messages added by welcome headers or any other addon must be customized to insure the proper site title appears. This is not a limit so much as a nuisance. So remember to customize your messages to include your forum's name!

The Welcome Header System is designed to be flexible and highly customizable to meet the specific needs of your forum. To customize which messages show up and what they say, go to your vBulletin Admin Control Panel, click on the "Notices" and select any of the 4 messages displayed.

When I goto the notices its not showing any messages at all ???:erm:

Very strange. Can you double check that version 5.0.1 is showing up in your product manager?

If so, run the query:

SELECT * FROM notice; If nothing appears, uninstall and reinsall.

No problem! I'll be releasing a set of additional messages sometime in the coming weeks (defaulted as off) to give sites more ideas/ options to play with.

Glad to hear it. The mod has to create a few database records to work, if any of those fail, no notices. Hopefully this was just a fluke but if anyone has a similar issue, please be sure to report it.

The style shown in the screenshot (divematrix.com) is a custom design. The sidebar is just HTML placed in the appropriate templates for the pages it's used in -- no hack/addon necessary.

See edit at bottom: This product works perfectly!

This was working so well but now I cannot get the notices to work at all.

I tried deleting the plug-in and reinstalling but to no avail. I even reverted the forumhome template back to the original and tried again but no go!

I KNOW THIS WORKS! I had it working not two days ago. I have NO idea what could be going on.

I hope I can figure this out. Does anyone know where the notices are being called from?

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: I got this working. It was my fault ( imagine that ) ..somehow I accidentally added a style sheet that hosed me.

It sounds like your custom template sneeds some reverting to take advantage of the notices system. Check the default templates against your customization and find the missing variables.

First of course, thanks!

Could someone help me to setup this perhaps?
Currently I’m using the ‘Welcome headers’ system to add a general notice for all registered members.

Would it be possible to overrule that notice when a registered member hasn’t been posting/visiting X time ago?
Or perhaps if it would be possible to add a second notice bar (one SEO friendly, one not (in this case for announcements, etc.))

Also, in this case using this as a general notice manager, would it be possible to select more than one usergroup?
As an admin I’m mainly in the administrators usergroup, and therefore will never see any of the ‘registered usergroup’ notices.

(It could be I had to ask that last question to the vbulletin.com dev team instead)

Edit:

About the 1st question, it looks like I've figured it out.
It would be great if both 'Notice 'Never Posted' and 'Post More Often' has not already been displayed on the page' could be selected.

Thanks again!

superthang,

The notices system is a native vBulletin 3.7 feature so any comments on the functionality of thats system should be directed to vbulletin.com's feedback forum. The welcome headers system is just a set of default notices to get you started but I encourage you to add more of your own and tweak the rules to match your needs!

Just installed this and it appears the unregistered user message is showing under the Guest message even though the defualt is checked not to show.

This may be a bug with VB itself.

I'm not certain you can accomplish that exact goal with the notices system. You can however set a message to only show to members of the group registered which is close.

Ted S

Sure. You'd just insert the code into the forumhome template instead of the header template. Keep in mind that the entire idea of welcome headers is to appear throughout the site... people don't just view one page of a site.

You can edit the boxes by changing the HTML in the template welcome_headers (you'll want to change the width to accomplish this goal). If you don't know HTML and want to more advance things head over to www.w3schools.com (http://www.w3schools.com) for the basics.

My mistake... Didn't realize this was the 3.7 version of this thread. The notices template is a default part of vbulletin 3.7 and not something this hack effects.

Look for the code:

<if condition="$show['notices']">
<table class="tborder" cellpadding="$stylevar[cellpadding]" cellspacing="$stylevar[cellspacing]" border="0" width="100%" align="center">
<tr>
<td class="thead">$vbphrase[notices]</td>

HRK,

If you are using the 3.7 version of this addon there is no reason to remove any lines of code and doing so may cause the addon to not work. In 3.7 the notices are a default feature and this addon just inputs a predefined set to get you started.

Hi Ted,

so in summary you are asking those using vb3.7 b not to remove the line of codes.?

the package contain a readme file which state

vB Version: 3.7.x

1. From your Admin Control Panel expand the "Styles and Templates" option.

2. Click the "Style Manager" link and then select "Edit Templates" for the style you wish to first edit (you will need to repeat steps 1 & 2 for every parent style you have).

3. Select the FORUMHOME template.

Scroll about 20 lines until you find the code:

<if condition="$show['guest']">
<!-- guest welcome message -->
<tr>
<td class="tcat" colspan="<if condition="$vboptions['showmoderatorcolumn']">6<else />5</if>"><phrase 1="$vboptions[bbtitle]">$vbphrase[welcome_to_the_x]</phrase></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td class="alt1" colspan="<if condition="$vboptions['showmoderatorcolumn']">6<else />5</if>">
<phrase 1="faq.php$session[sessionurl_q]" 2="register.php$session[sessionurl_q]">$vbphrase[first_visit_message]</phrase>
</td>
</tr>
<!-- / guest welcome message -->
</if>

Remove this entire block of code. This will remove your current and default welcome headers making room for your enhanced headers.

Save and close the template.:)

thanks

Removing the default message is fine if your templates have one but you need to leave the notices call in place. If you are using an old template from the 3.6x series or earlier and have not reverted it, you will need to add in the notices call.

Hi ted,
the funny thing is i have a "default" template that work fine.
i tried to copy over the FORUMHOME codes to my other template. that doesnt get it to work either.

pls let me know if u like to drop by and take a look. i would appreciate any kind of assistance here to get this working.

thank you

my vb version :3.7 clean installed upgraded from vb3.6.8 before.

Ted S

Right. You have a default template with the 3.7 code in it and other templates without it. You'll need to copy the new notices code into those templates to get them to work. Bare in mind that forumhome controls one page only and is not where the notices system lies. That should be your navbar/ header template.

hrk

hi ted.

i got it solved ,
i was running the template with ExamDiff and found the diff and adjust accordingly.
it was some at navbar and some at header template.
thank you for your assistance.

I'm going to pull a dingleberry by probably asking an obvious question but ...

I've been on some sites where the guest message travels with the length of the page. Bit of an 'annoyance' factor encouraging you to sign up. How, if at all, would I be able to set something like that up?

I made the assumption about this hack but you know what they say about assuming anything ..

Oh, and really, really waiting for the guest limited views update to 3.7.

While I'm asking questions, figured I would get in one more.

I run VBCMPS from vbAdvaced. The notice shows up on the front/home page as well and just doesn't sit right with me. Is there any way to remove that? I like having it in the forums, galleries, etc, just don't want it on my front page.

Any help would be appreciated.

You would need to modify the notices template by "wrapping" it in a set of conditionals such that it doesnt appear on whatever page you like...

i.e.

<if condition="THIS_SCRIPT != 'homepage' AND THIS_SCRIPT != 'other page'">

current code

</if>

This isn't difficult but will require you to find a script and modify your welcome headers/ notices template to integrate it. There's several scripts out there... just google search "dhtml persistent window" or "dhtml floating message" and find the option that suits your needs.

Customize your notices template as you see fit. The template is a part of vBulletin's core code and not this addon.

I have installed this - but the welcome headers/notices are not visible on the style I am using. They do show up on the default style.

How do I get them to appear on my current style?

Kaycee123
04-26-2008, 05:44 PM
OK - after several hours of fiddling around I finally figured it out:

If your Notices are not showing up on your customized style, you need to add this to your Navbar template wherever you want them to show up

<if condition="$show['notices']">
<table class="tborder" cellpadding="$stylevar[cellpadding]" cellspacing="$stylevar[cellspacing]" border="0" width="100%" align="center">
<tr>
<td class="thead">$vbphrase[notices]</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td class="alt1">$notices</td>
</tr>
</table>
<br />
</if>
<if condition="$show['forumdesc']">
<table class="tborder" cellpadding="$stylevar[cellpadding]" cellspacing="$stylevar[cellspacing]" border="0" width="100%" align="center">
<tr>
<td class="alt1" width="100%"><strong>$foruminfo[title]</strong> <span class="smallfont">$foruminfo[description]</span></td>
</tr>
</table>
<br />
</if>

One other question - if a member meets the criteria for TWO different messages to show up, they are all lumped together in the Notices box. Is there a way of splitting the messages apart so it looks a bit neater??

Ted S
04-27-2008, 08:55 PM
The notices are a function of vBulletin and something you would need to customize through vBulletin's templates. I've not written up documentation on this yet but will have some out shortly.

I guess you missed the mod description at the top of the page....

I'm wondering does this just fill in some examples to work off of or does it add features you wouldn't normally be able to produce without this mod.

EDIT: Forget it

EDIT: Forget it

As stated in the description, in 3.7 a robust interface for notices was added into the default program rendering it useless to have a separate welcome headers tool. However, as most people don't want to think up a basic messaging strategy, this addon was ported to 3.7 in order help the thousands of users make a simple move and get a start on their notices.

Thanks for this excellent mod! I saved my old setting from Welcome Headers and easily transferred them.

A note to others upgrading: I had to actually uinstall the old version, and reinstall this mod: overwriting it wouldn't do it. It took me a bit to realize it hadn't installed completely, but I was able to tell because it didn't have the new default notices.

And yes, registrations and posting have been up since I added welcome headers. :)

Ok, after a few hours of playing with conditions, I found a fix:

In navbar template:

Change:

<if condition="$show['notices']">

To:

<if condition="$show['notices'] AND THIS_SCRIPT != 'adv_index'">

This will keep notices from showing on any cmps pages which is what I needed. Just in case anyone else may need it :)

Are there any notices showing up in the manager at this time? Did you try and install this previously?

Just wondering if the welcome headers message is now placed in line with vbseo recommendations?

The notices system (which is built in to vBulletin) shows up above the navbar by default. As I last checked, vbSEO recommends placing it below the navbar and using an image rather than test for any guest message.

An updated version (5.0.2) has been released which contains a fix in the link for

sendmessage.php. Upgrading is not required, this can be fixed by manually changing the phrase from send_message.php to sendmessage.php.

Well that explains it! They've added a new bit of code to the navbar template which you'll need to add:

<if condition="$show['notices']">
<table class="tborder" cellpadding="$stylevar[cellpadding]" cellspacing="$stylevar[cellspacing]" border="0" width="100%" align="center">
<tr>
<td class="thead">$vbphrase[notices]</td>

<tr>

yes you can edit the messages. basically, this hack adds some standard messages that you go in and edit in the notices area; for example, unconfirmed user is added where you can go in and edit the notice for them. if you're not seeing the additional messages, you may need to uninstall and reinstall, perhaps? just upgrading did not work for me. i had to uninstall the product and reinstall when i went to 3.7.

Strange. I could not get Welcome_headers or limited_guest_viewing mods to work.

I suspect its because I have already changed my parent ForumHome templates many times for other mods.Plus a custom style. So that the block of code you state to remove is not even there.
This is what I have relating to guests.

Thanks for the kind words ConqSoft. I'm actually very pleased that vB now includes this functionality and just hope they'll start seeding basic messages in the future so more people use it. My goal was never to create a huge mod with thousands of users but rather to bring a little marketing and UE to the forums out there... now that's something even more sites have I consider it a win for all vB users.

As you can see from the thread, this is working for thousands of people so let's try and figure out why it's not working for you rather than cursing at it.

Are you upgrading your site from an older version? If so, did you revert your templates to make use of the new notices system?

Are you showing anything in the notices manager when you have the plugin installed?

Sorry, i'm not expert, but i don't see any difference with the default message for the guest of vb.

The default message is (a) one message for one group and (b) appears on only one page. Using the notices system and the logic of welcome headers you get different messages for guests, returning users, inactive users, users who need to activate, etc... and they appear throughout your site.

Can we have a specific message for a specific forum ? For all Users.

Example:

Nope. As of 3.7 this is all controlled through the notices system. If you prefer the old method the 3.6 version will work fine with 3.7 but does not use notices and can't be expanded with them.

Glad you like the addon!

Take a look at the notices system and adding a new notice... You can set things up to work for specific areas with a lot of other criteria if you so chose. If that doesn't do it for you let me know and I'll show you the code to manually add a message to one or a couple of forums.

Ted I've uninstalled this, after reverting all my templates, after upgrading from 3.6.4 to 3.7.3 (using the 3.6 version of this Mod).

BUT the welcome message is still showing up for unregistered users (with the ARG undefined thing) though not for anyone else (such as registered users who haven't posted).

I've searched and can't find $welcomeheaders anywhere in any of them.

I've completely uninstalled, reverted all templates. I even created a NEW Parent style, it even shows up in that.

How do I COMPLETELY remove everything?

There must be a remnant of this somewhere, it's showing up evenin freshly minted Parent styles (but ony too Guests).

Delete the template welcome_headers from your system.

Has anyone managed to set up the version that uses the notice system to display different images for different notices? The second post in this topic, the FAQ, https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=1404055&postcount=3, seemed to suggest it would not work that way out of the box.

This means if you are using an image for your guest message, you would need to take extra steps to make your other messages display properly. The solution to this is to remove all HTML from the notices template and customize the layout directly through the notice body; this way you can have entirely different styles for different messages.

I would really like to use this mod but don't want to have irrelevant text displayed on every page to search engines. I am new to vBulletin and am hoping that somebody can expand on the instruction offered in the blurb above so that even I can do it. :)

Thanks!

Chunky Monkey as I said in that post, you can use the notices system and images, it just takes some tweaking to get the layout right. As an alternative, the 3.6 version of this hack which does not use the notices system will work just fine in 3.7.

Thank you. I misunderstood and thought you meant it required additional code, conditionals, etc.

Thank you for posting the link and me being able to see what this does. We need a bit more powerful version of this type mod but this is nice.

We installed this mod and adjusted all 4 notices then save settings. Doesn't work. Any ideas why? It should appear in guest mode but nothing appears and everything appears to be set right.

For some reason I had to uninstall and reinstall this mod to get it to work but it would seem that it is working just fine now. This is still one of the best mods out there. :up:

I upgraded from 4.11 by installing the new xml and selected overwrite. I got no errors, however there were not notices. I installed it again... same thing. I then unistalled the product and re-installed it and the notices finally showed up!

Ok we have 2 usergroups that have notices - girl talk and guy talk. We created the guy talk and edited the original default notice for girl talk. BOTH have same conditions, just the difference is one is for males and other is for females. Why does one usergroup work (female) and the other (male) doesnt show?? They have identical conditions except usergroup??

I don't get it.. :(

-using 3.7.3
-first time fresh install for mod
-notices show up in notice manager
-notices are the same for said usergroups as are conditions except the usergroup condition.

Anyone know why it's showing for one usergroup and not the other??

Well if the conditions are identical than either the logic is wrong (i.e. you incorrectly changed the usergroup) or your test is wrong (i.e. you weren't logged in as a member of the second usergroup to test with it). There's really not a whole lot more direction I can give you than to double check your changes and the group IDs.

Nope. The mod lists the same usergroup conditions and it's perfectly identical except the usergroup itself. I will delete completely the male usergroup notices and re-add them and see if that makes a difference. Will report back..

To be clear, are you using the 3.7 version of this addon which uses notices or the 3.6 series which uses conditionals?

Very strange. Can you double check that version 5.0.1 is showing up in your product manager?

If so, run the query:

SELECT * FROM notice; If nothing appears, uninstall and reinsall.

This is the error that I get:

An error occurred while attempting to execute your query. The following information was returned.
error number: 1146
error desc: Table 'xxxx_xxxx_xxx.notice' doesn't exist

I replaced the sensitive data above ;)

I have already removed/reinstalled the mod a couple of times.

EDIT:

The query works when using bb_notice instead of just .notice

The problem with everything that I have going on is that the notices don't show up, at all.

3.7 version, fresh install. I deleted the notices that weren't working then re-did them. Now it works! Don't know what happened but seems ok now.
