I have no idea, but Hostgator uses Theplanet's datacenter - so it has 99.9% uptime.

HostGator runs great with vBulletin, almost no downtime, and less than a second response (for a default installation of vB on gator273) :)

Hostgator is pretty good for thier support and hosting. Only thing that I know of on the downside about HG is thier shared and reseller plans have a 25 continuous click feature. Which for a board with over 600 or more members is bad.

Dude, I'm a total noob. I bought the vB software, registered the domain name(through HostGator), then signed up for their Swamp Croc (http://www.hostgator.com/shared.shtml) package.

Their service and support has been top notch! My board (http://www.audioandanarchy.com/index.php) has been up for less than a month but has grown rapidly, and there's never even been a glitch with the server. And the support staff and community(running vB, I might add) is awesome!

<a href="http://forums.theshadys.net" target="_blank">I use HostGator as well</a>. While I don't like some of the way it's setup (which is actually due to cpanel, so not much they can do about it), the service is excellent.

In terms of full customisation, try DreamHost. If you're after a mix and are in the UK/Europe, HostGator is a good choice due to the speed.

I am using HostGator for my website (www.hiphoprapcommunity.com) and I think the server is great, especially since, I have an arcade with over 100 games, a music and video page, radio and tv streaming, css custom profile styles, two different skins, interactive profiles, profile gallery pictures, and mp3 uploads to user profile, no problems with the host so far :).

600 members are not that many. Which host would you recommend if you expect to have, say, 10 to 50 thousand members after a year or two, and 500 to 2000 members on line simultaneously during peak time?

Ive been using them for almost a year with absolutely no problem. I use the largest shared plan they have. My board is modded photoplog, arcade, vbseo and vbplaza. Problem I have with them is the emailing method.

One note that I read a lot throughout different vb forums is that if you have 15-20 members on at once they shut down your site without a warning (shared plans). Something about too many connections. So since my forum has picked up Im considering moving to realwebhost.net. I read great reviews about them..

I've been on Hostgator its good reliable hosting. Be sure to look for a hosting coupon at one of the web hosting review sites before signing up.

I am now on Downtown Host which is also awesome, but a smaller company which I like.

What ever you do don't sign up for any hosting with out phone support.

instead of listening about gossips, why don't you ask the guys in the support system?!

I did. They offered me their dedicated plan.

I can't really understand that the most users I had ever online was 400. Most of the time, I have less than a hundred simultaneous online users in my forum and they wanted to me to upgrade to dedicated.

I also got into trouble with them for the inactivity mod... for sending out 200 emails at a time.

Now my account was again suspended for this.
Hello,

This message is to advise you of a temporary block placed on a file or folder under your account. The account referenced above was found to be consuming an inordinate amount of system resources, to the point of degrading overall system performance.

While we do limit each account to no more than 25% of a system's CPU in our terms of service, we do not actively disable accounts until they greatly exceed that number, which is what happened in this case. Fortunately, we were able to isolate the cause to a small set of files/folders. Rather than disabling the entire account, we were able to disable just those files/folders.

It was necessary to disable these items to maintain a minimum level of proper service for everyone else. From this point, the following options are available:

a) Block heavy users of your site, if any, that may be causing excessive load.
b) Optimize scripts (php, etc) that may be consuming a large amount of cpu.
c) Upgrade to a dedicated server; your site may have outgrown a shared environment.

Please let us know if you have a solution you feel would resolve this issue. Should a solution not be forthcoming, we are happy to assist you with an upgrade to dedicated services, where your site will have room to grow without affecting other customers. I appreciate your attention to this matter. Thank you.

In fairness, hostgator support USED to be fast and efficient. It would usually take less than an hour for me to resolve my issues... but now, the shortest waiting period for me is 3 hours.

Anyway, you go figure it out. I still agree that HG is great... but I'm looking for a better deal.

Every time I've emailed them, I get a reply in about an hour (4 hours tops on weekends). Good uptime...and there is NOT a 10mb limit on shared, I just uploaded a 90mb file a few hours ago.

You can attach a 90mb file in a vBulletin post? Are you using a shared hosting?

If the host limits this and is unwilling to increase, then there is not much you can do.

The point is not that they are not "unwilling"... they fixed a range of ratios that the clients have to follow. This is how works professional hosts. They are not giving anything "unlimited" because they would have to give permissions to a lot of things that are causing problems on most of the sites that are hosted by them... spam, spoil of resources, etc...

when you have specific needs for your own site, the suggestion is to negociate a commercial account, not a "mostly free" hosting... when you have near-to-free accounts, you have to consider that you will have near-to-no-permissions...

PS Increasing the max upload limit might affect performance, but has nothing to do with security or "problems".

nexialys

This is a per-server setting... like i said, you can negociate to have your site on a different server, under different configurations... you have to pay for what you need... (i actually have my own hostgator account having the mailing limit (200 emails per hour) raised because i have negociated with them that i needed to send email all day long...)

and you are right, there is no security risk with bigger files... just a larger risk to have people uploading porn or pirated softwares... and this is against their policies... i suppose this is a way to avoid a part of it.

anyway, when are you in need to upload a 50 gigs file?!

You cant have vbseo running as they says you need a server for it. Host Gator is horrible. As soon as your site starts to get somewhat big, they'll throw the resource card on you and shut your site down with no forewarning, you'll just browse to your site and find it shut off. They shut my site off on me constantly for resource limits, I kept upgrading and was upgraded all the way up to semi-dedicated paying $75 a month to share a server that was ABSOLUTELY slower. I finally said screw them and left their shady company. Support is horrible, I also had a lot of down time too.

I might be moving away from HostGator, not because of the company, but because I'm basically restricted with any shared hosting it seems.

DreamHost are the closest thing to "unlimited", but they're a little too far away for me.

I'm hoping to get one of these with the 30 domain Plesk addon:

Dreamhost is one of the worst hosts you can go to. Their customer support is so bad, their up time is unstable but they lure you in with false cheap prices and high space and bandwidth. I had a plan which was 500 Gigs and around 200 gigs in space and I got banned because I used, 300 of it. They said I used too much and I couldnt get a refund (and they still charged me for the remaining 3 months I didnt use.

Me: Hi Priscilla. I am running a web forum, and I heard good things about HostGator. On the other hand, I have also heard that HostGator shutsdown accounts that have moer than 25 users, and send more than 200 emails an hour. Is this true?

Priscilla T.: There is a 500 hourly email limit per domain on all shared servers;

Priscilla T.: That is true

Me: Ok, what about 25 members on at one time (with vBulletin)

Priscilla T.: What you mean by HostGator shutsdown accounts that have more than 25 users

Me: I was just reading reviews, and they said that for popular forums (mine has 6500 members), that Hostgator doesnt allow moer than 25 connections at once

Me: I want to move to you guys, but am just worried about this

Priscilla T.: Hostgator allow maximum of 25 connection simultaneously. If you having 5 domains, then its 25 connection each domain, and total of 125 connections.

Me: Wow ok... so it wouldn't work on a popular forum then

The other day I had 32 members of the site online at once. I was suprised I did not get an email about it. Not sure why but I am not complaining.

These are 2 different things.

Users online is measured during the cookie timeout period (default 900 seconds), so if 50 people in a 15 minute period come online, you will see 50 online users.

The number of MySQL connections is the maximum number of connections at 1 time. As a MySQL connection only last as long as it takes to generate the page, you could be having 100 online users loading pages with a 5 second interval, and never have more then a few MySQL connections at the same time. On the other hand 1 single user loading simultaneous 50 pages in different windows could (try to) create 50 concurrent MySQL connections.

My clients run on dedicated HostGator servers and they are blazing fast. Couple that with great support and I've never had a reason to shop elsewhere.

what does you spamming your site link have to do with hostgator being "best and most reliable shared servers. Period."???

And i've heard far less complaints about other hosting companies then HostGator. But i guess its good if you've got 11 members.

Are the Bots and spiders counted under users?
My forum has seen an increase from 20 members online to 200 users including spiders.
And on an average my forum uses 35-40 GB of Bandwidth per month.
Which cheap and reliable host is recommended for me?

I have a dedicated server with hostgator. i normally have at least 100 users on my forum at a time and i've been very happy with hostgator. speed has not been a problem since switching to them and for the most part, their customer service/support team is outstanding. as with any "level 1" type environment, you'll run into the occasional person who is just phoning it in....but I would definitely recommend them overall.

i have never had to wait on the phone (or their live online chat system) for more than 5 minutes....and it's usually less than 2 if that helps.

Host Gator is the worst hosting company I've ever encountered.

I highly don't recommend them!
