Images lost

Our site has been off line for a while and we recently set it live again, but all images in previous posts show as the dreaded red x, the board is set to thumbnail images in the actual posts in case that relevant.

So how do I recover the images?

Maybe your posted images was hosted on sites that now have them deleted.

I'm sure there are some, but most are attachments ie images ppl have uploaded, they are held in database not file system currently

The attachment are on our server and in the database (attachments table). Would it help if I moved them from the database to the file system?

right click on the red x, select properties and it will give you an image location.

Check to see where the image is hosted from that.

Should I move the images to the filesystem is the movement from one storage type to another run any risks?

I would try - repairing the attachment table; moving them out of the table into the filesystem and then back again; checking the source code to see where these red X images are. That is what I would do first.
