View Full Version : Mini Mods - Banned Member Redirect
ChU v2
11-13-2007, 10:00 PM
What is this?
This simple little code redirects your banned members to a page of your choice. The default URL is http://www.msxlabs.org/banned.php which I think is hilarious. This link was made by NeutralizeR (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/member.php?u=109527) ... Please check post #37 for more links by him!
How To:
1. Go to your header template.
2. Paste this at the top:
<if condition="$bbuserinfo['usergroupid'] == 8">
<meta HTTP-EQUIV="REFRESH" content="0; url=http://www.msxlabs.org/banned.php">
</if>
To make the redirect take place after X seconds edit:
content="0;
with "0" being how every many seconds before the redirect takes place.
Then watch them groan in agony. Hahah

funny but isn't this the same as hotlinking? I like the mod BUT if its not on my server im stealing bandwidth. My bandded members go to that site taking up bandwidth and with tons of banned members from other boards that can really hurt who ever is hosting that site. Unless you have permission from that sites owner, I don't believe this is a good mod unless you can change it to wear we can have that movie on our site.\
Just my opinion though

It's a public link, so I don't see why it would be a problem. I'll look into getting permission. Also, it's very easy to change the URL to something else.

Well - I looked at the source code and you can download the swf file: http://dts.msxlabs.org/NeutralizeR/hittheroad2.swf --- Since it's public domain - I'd say you can simply download it - then edit html page and have the redirect on your own forum url

It messes up my site when I add that code. It tries to redirect to my custom page, but it redirects and goes back to the main page about 5 times, then just says its loading...Any ideas?
Is there anyway to get it to say the banned members name as opposed to just "member"? That would be pretty sweet...

I don't see why, unless you've edited the link it goes to. Other than that it should just redirect to the link that you place.

No, the file is not my own.

Check the ID of your Banned usergroup, it might be that your group settings are wrong.

You could unban them, but I don't think there is HTML to do that.

Ok I very rarely come in here and criticise, but I have to agree with wowway1. I come in here to find modifications for vBulletin for which I have PURCHASED a licence. I personally do NOT wish to see "examples" posted here that involve force-quitting my browser to get out of. Do what you wish with your own sites, but not here. It's NOT funny, and I believe the moderators should remove those links.
Quite apart from the links included by Danny-E and ChU v2 being totally inappropriate, the modification itself is quite unnecessary.
Ever since the introduction of the plug-in system it has been a relatively simple matter to write a plugin that will redirect specific usergroups - or indeed a series of plugins that can redirect different usergroups to different places. I've already pointed this out in another thread here: https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=1425051&postcount=30
With that in mind, I consider this modification to be a waste of space, and clearly of no better value than to permit an opportunity for inconsiderate people to post useless and unwelcome links. :down:

BOO! If you don't like it = Don't download it!
A simple concept really - but to put it point blankly - the modifications at vB.org are contributed by coders for free - How dare you put down their hard work and sharing with the rest of the vBulletin Community!

Please do not try to imply that I'm ungrateful for the work that is done here at vB.org. You'll find my thanks in many threads.
Had it not been for the subsequent links posted by the releaser and others, which caused viewers to force-quit their browsers, I would simply have ignored this, since the modification has little merit.
Clearly my assumption that these links were inappropriate has been upheld, since the offending links are no longer present.
One should be aware of their facts before levelling critisicm at others, and had you taken the time to read my own post, which I linked to, you would understand why this particular modification is superficial. I seek no credit myself for simply pointing out a facility that already exists, however I stand by my comments. This modification is simply jumping on the bandwagon to claim credit for something that's already incorporated into the vB software. Any coder who is conversant with the plug-in system would be aware that no modification is necessary, apart from writing the simple plug-in I described, in order to effect redirection after log-in.
For those who feel this is a better way, please give your thanks to the releaser and click the install button. My complaint was based on the subsequent "examples" that were wholly inappropriate for these forums.

At anyrate - my apologies - I thought you were criticizing the person who shared the re-direct code - which still seems you do with your statement "blablablablablablablablablabla this particular modification is superficial"
About the links though- I didn't quite understand what you meant - I suppose you speak of the "tricky" links... Based on the premise of this template modification - seems the links would serve it's purpose well LOL - The premise being: Get off of my site and don't come back - you're banned!
Anyway - I'm quite happy when someone shares their coding work, rather it be something that can be found in the immediate vB code and reworked to such a simplistic template mod as "Banned Member Redirect" OR an intricate weaving of code by talents such as the creator of the Interactive Profiles modification == It's the sharing that makes the vB.org Community a community. So when you proceed to cut down someone for sharing - I jumped to a conclusion - so again - apologies for that and no hard feelings.
Jacquii.

Certainly the links in question would have served their purpose very well indeed, but I'm sure you'd agree there's a big difference between presenting them to someone who deserves to be banned, and someone who is innocently perusing a forum such as this.
Perhaps if a warning had been posted, there would have been less reason to criticize. It was extremely annoying having to force-quit with 6 tabs open, and totally unexpected here at vB, which is a site I have great faith in, and respect for.
But I completely agree that sharing is what makes a community work, and everyone is free to choose whatever they feel is right for their own site and levels of ability. Perhaps my critisicm of the modification itself was a little harsh, since not everyone is comfortable writing plug-ins, however simple they may seem to those with more experience.
Anyways, no hard feelings here either, life's way too short for that. :)

Yeh, I do know how it's done thanks. But since you have no idea of the work I was involved in, don't you think you're being a little presumptous here? I consider vB.org to be a reputable site, and not somewhere I have to close down all my other tabs before I visit. If it was such a trivial issue as you seem to think, then the links wouldn't have been removed.
And quite honestly ChU v2 (and Jacquii) there's very little point in posting apologies, if you're then going to continue trying to justify the posting of those links and attempt to ridicule those who objected.
ChU v2
03-07-2008, 03:12 AM
Never just justified the links silly, I said it's not hard to stop then if someone had been turned onto them. You my friend are being a little uptight.

Hello,
I've just noticed my work is shared here. Thank you :) I'm an easy going person, won't make any "permission" speech here.
The story of the flash movie:
I'd noticed my ex (long time - real life relationship) registered at our forums and acting like somebody else... and i wanted to say "goodbye" for the last time... then i changed her name with "Member" and used it for the regular members for fun.
To redirect (http://dts.msxlabs.org/NeutralizeR/ChaosTime.swf) or not to redirect (http://dts.msxlabs.org/NeutralizeR/OK.swf).

Don't know, might be a good question for the general forums.

What about them? Once the ban is lifted they are no longer is the banned usergroup so the code does not apply.

The redirect tells the member by word, images and sound not to come back. Although this is great for permanently banned members, this does seem wrong for temporary banned members. It would be good to have a different message for those.
ChU v2
04-17-2008, 05:41 PM
I see your point. Your free to use your own link, but I'm going to implement a time duration so that it does not redirect right away. So that, the user will be able to view the ban message before being redirected.

Which template has the ban message - and could I simply put the ban message on the html page?
Jacquii.
ChU v2
04-18-2008, 02:32 AM
Well, the ban message is typed when you ban the member and I don't know what template that is. After I don't think you could have the ban message on the HTML page unless it was the same for every user.
AND
To make a redirect after a certain amount of seconds change:
content=0
with the "0" being how ever many seconds before the redirect takes place.

i was looking for this mod i had it working once somehow it stopped so i changed some small things
place the attached files in your root dir
place this code in youre header and alter the url in the code
<if condition="$bbuserinfo['usergroupid'] == 12">
<meta HTTP-EQUIV="REFRESH" content="0; url=http://www.youre-url-here/banned.htm">
</if>
be shure that you use the correct usergroupid number
still works and this way it will always work
o yeah replace the header.jpg also use frontpage or what ever to change it with your own header gif or jpg etc etc etc
