What is a Custom Search Engine?

A Custom Search Engine is a tailored search experience, built using Google's core search technology, that prioritizes or restricts search results based on websites and pages you specify. Your Custom Search Engine can be tailored to reflect your point of view or area of expertise. With a Custom Search Engine, you can:
Apply your website's look and feel to the search results page.
Provide search refinements within results pages to make it easier for searchers to find the information they're looking for.
Add sites to your search engine's index as you surf the web.
Invite friends and trusted users to co-edit and contribute to your search engine.
Make money from your Custom Search Engine by participating in Google's AdSense program.Once you've defined your search engine index, Google will give you a simple piece of code for a search box to place on your site or blog. You'll then have the option to choose various customization options to make the look and feel and functionality of your search engine your own.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q) What exactly does this modification do?
A) It integrates your CSE with your site - results are on your site not on a Google-hosted page.

Q) Can I run Adsense ads on the same page?
A) No, it's Adsense Google's TOS. To earn money, you will need to associate your CSE with your Adsense account. You can do this by clicking the "Make Money" section of your custom search engine control panel.

This is fracking great. I was hooked on the idea of the Custom Search and have seen some sites online doing really well with it. I didn't want to divert from my site's 'feel' - this is the ideal solution.

A big thank you. :)

Downloaded and installed...

Followed directions to the tee. Also made sure I included the url to the gtsearch.php within the CSE code.

Worked a couple of times...but getting a lot of Google Internal Server errors.

It was fun while it lasted...but must uninstall since it's really serving no useful purpose if Google can't handle the query.

May be nice...once all the bugs are out of it...

So at this point, I really can't click installed, since it's not functioning properly.

it's against their TOS - do not add google adsense .. you will earn money when visitors click on Sponsored ads in the Google results

Doesn't this mean that users will only be able to search in threads that are visible to guests?whatever google can index is available

I'm getting an error. I have added the GTSearch box now, but it still seems to try to use the standard search when I enter any text into the Google box.

However, since the standard box is empty (when I use the google box), it returns an error that nothing matches the search terms.

You need to specify in the CSE what the url will be to display your results...

Example: http://www.yourdomain.com/forums/gtsearch.php

Make sure you specify the landing page...gtsearch.php.

Saviour
11-07-2007, 12:10 AM
By the way...for those interested...it will conflict with AdSense if you don't specify in your AdSense account to let www.google.com/coop access to the AdSense account.

Email I received from Google:

"You are receiving this email because you recently requested access to use
AdSense through www.google.com/coop. In order to use AdSense features through
www.google.com/coop, you'll need to give the site access to the ad
code and performance information in your AdSense account."

Thanks for the reply. :)

I added:

Once you do this, go to your control panel, and click "Code". The codes that go in that section are in there. :)

By the way, when I go to mydomain.com/forum/gtsearch.php and enter it from that box, it works fine. But when I try to use the navbar, it seems to try to use the default search even when I enter the text into the Google search.

Nevermind, I reverted the old templates.

I don't truly expect to get a reply from the hack maker - but doesn't Google offer such a thing?

Jacquii.yes they do, but this gives you a way to integrate it in to your forum with no template edits, and the option to turn it on or off. This also has a page to return the searches to, and on that page is a notice at the top that says Can't find what you are looking for? Try vbulletin or our Advanced Search (in that example "vbulletin" is the search term)

I think it is a good hack, and it is well-written, and I appreciate Princeton sharing it. I don't understand why you are so critical of it.

Princeton, in what template does the conditional "THIS_SCRIPT!='gtsearch'" get put, and where exactly in the template?

I just did this last night. What you will have to do is wrap your adsence code like this

<if condition="THIS_SCRIPT!='gtsearch'">
<center>
<script type="text/javascript"><!--
google_ad_client = "*********";
google_ad_width = 728;
google_ad_height = 15;
google_ad_format = "728x15_0ads_al_s";
google_ad_channel = "";
google_color_border = "cdcddc";
google_color_bg = "cdcddc";
google_color_link = "0000FF";
google_color_text = "000000";
google_color_url = "008000";
//-->
</script>
<script type="text/javascript"
src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">
</script>
</center>
</if>

This will make it display on all pages except the search result page (gtsearch). If you are using an ad management plugin you will have to find out how they insert the info into the template and edit at that point to include the <if> statement.

I found the problem with navbar executing the regular vb search with blank results.

The extra template code for this got inserted ABOVE the ending form tag from the vbsearch. Move the ending form tag to just after the TR tag of the vb search code.

<div><input type="text" class="bginput" name="query" size="25" tabindex="1001" /><input type="submit" class="button" value="$vbphrase[go]" tabindex="1004" /></div>

</tr></form>

Okay. I think I'm asking the wrong question.

I THOUGHT that the url: www.mysite.com/forum/gtsearch.php would bring up the search input screen. I want to have a link to that search screen from anywhere on my site, not just in the forum.

Is this a faulty assumption?

My search works perfectly from the navbar pull-down.

per Google - the charset of the forum and your Google CSE must be set to UTF-8

another alternative is to wrap your CSE form via an iframe and set the charset for that page to UTF-8

Outstanding hack and installed on AVS Forum.

When you get the results and have the option to search the local site (Can't find what you are looking for), how can I make that display POSTS vs THREADS. Or, give the option?

Thank you kindly.

BTW...I jsut found out that is someone uses " " in the search as "video display" it will then not return any results if they then try "Can't find what you are looking for..."

It looks like this...

Can't find what you are looking for? Try a local search by clicking here: %26quot%3Bvideo+display%26quot%3B or our Advanced Search.

The link looks like this...

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/search.php?do=process&query=%26quot%3Bvideo+display%26quot%3B

Great hack Princeton, installation went flawlessly... after I reverted the navbar template that is :)

One question though: is it possible to use separate CSS for the search engine page in accordance with the vB styles on a forum?

I'm thinking a conditional along the lines of if forum style id = x show css 1 else if forum style id = y, show css 2.

Few suggestions if I may.

On the search results page, why isn't there a border and table division for the google search and (cant find what you needed) section. No biggie I can code that in but it just looks unfinished to me.

Also what about setting the results with a margin or is that a result of the google search or my personal setup. I haven't tried tweaking it yet. Either way as always if It says Princeton it's top quality work. Way to go on another very useful mod.. :up: Thanks

It appears that you have edited your navbar template heavily. Try reverting your navbar template & do the custom edit again or try replacing your header quick search form with this

<!-- header quick search form -->

Also is it possible to remove the DEFAULT VB search that appears ontop of the CSE when you click on SEARCH (in pulldown), and only show the CSE show up and then offer a advance search if the CSE fails?

If so how do you do this? (I dont want to disable forum default search just remove it from pulldown)

Also do i get paid for the AD clicks on search page or the search clicks on my site?

yes, you get paid for the ad clicks - you will need to connect your CSE with your Adsense account

Not tested but you can try this!

In navbar template search for:
<!-- header quick search form -->
<div class="vbmenu_popup" id="navbar_search_menu" style="display:none" align="$stylevar[left]">
<table cellpadding="4" cellspacing="1" border="0">

<td class="vbmenu_option"><a href="search.php$session[sessionurl_q]" accesskey="4" rel="nofollow">$vbphrase[advanced_search]</a></td>
</tr>
$template_hook[navbar_search_menu]
</table>
</div>
<!-- / header quick search form -->
Replace it with:
<!-- header quick search form -->
<div class="vbmenu_popup" id="navbar_search_menu" style="display:none" align="$stylevar[left]">
<table cellpadding="4" cellspacing="1" border="0">
$template_hook[navbar_search_menu]

Again I'm not sure but you can play with this.

In your GTSEARCH_GOOGLE template search & remove:
<if condition="$gtgoogle['qencode']">
<p class="smallfont" align="$stylevar[right]" width="100%" style="padding:$stylevar[cellspacing]px"><phrase 1="search.php?d$session[sessionurl]o=process&amp;query=$gtgoogle[qencode]" 2="$gtgoogle[qencode]" 3="search.php$session[sessionurl_q]">$vbphrase[cant_find_anything_x_y_z]</phrase></p>
</if>
Search for:
$footer
Add above:
<if condition="$gtgoogle['qencode']">
<p class="smallfont" align="$stylevar[left]" width="100%" style="padding:$stylevar[cellspacing]px"><phrase 1="search.php?d$session[sessionurl]o=process&amp;query=$gtgoogle[qencode]" 2="$gtgoogle[qencode]" 3="search.php$session[sessionurl_q]">$vbphrase[cant_find_anything_x_y_z]</phrase></p>
</if>
and see what happens!

yes, it's against Google's CSE TOS to show adsense ads within the search results

FYI
you actually don't need to as you will earn $$ whenever someone clicks on the ads within the search results page

All is working fine but for a minor problem, my site is Arabic using UTF-8. When I do a search all is fine except when it says "Can't find what your looking for? Try ...." the word or phrase is shown in code and not in Arabic for example when I type mac in Arabic is shows %D9%85%D8%A7%D9%83 it translates right but thats nothing but code.

Anyway this can be fixed?

gtsearch.php is putting in the header and the footer and a line that reads back "Search Results for (search phrase):" but nothing is below it, except the footer. I've looked at everything a hundred times.

If someone could take a look... the forum is www.tdpri.com. Try the search on the menu bar.

I'm running 3.6.5 and I'm wondering if this is why the problem. I didn't have the hook defined in my navbar template and had to manually add the hook to get the search box to show. Are there any other issues like this for 3.6.5?

FOUND THE ANSWER --- SOLVED!!

The code supplied by Google is missing a line and when you add this line to the Search Box code it makes everything work again:

<input type="hidden" name="cof" value="FORID:11" />
Simply add that line to your Search Box code before the javascript.

By the way FORID is the ad placement and 11 is top and bottom and 10 is top and right. I think 9 is top only but you'd have to test that.

I changed mine to FORID:10 and the ads are now Top and Right.

I'm not sure why some people need this and some people don't, but this worked. I found the answer in the Google CSE Forum buried deep in the older posts.

thanks, that worked for me =)

You can alter the ad position by using the controls in the code section of the control panel; or, you can edit the HTML search form directly. Change value="FORID:#" to FORID:9 for ads on the right, FORID:10 for ads on the top and right, or FORID:11 for ads on the top and bottom.

May I hope a little look on my failing issue ? :)
I would love to make it work

By the way I saw a joomla google custom search module made by a japanese developper that is able to display search results inside any joomla content, in a right column for example , on a metakey or title or content basis. It goes a little bit further and adds no advertisement...It's in a compact ajax block. Would'nt be a good idea to make it worjk the same way in a right column in vB ?

the custom search engine is only avail. from google without ads for nonprofits. so you can either register it as nonprofit through whatever process google requires, or add your own adsense code in order to benefit from the ads yourself, or simply use the search engine and allow it to show ads you get nothing from. that is pretty much the choices as i understand them.

Hello,

I tried multiple times to make it works but no success yet.

If I invoke directly the page
http://www.mysite.com/forums/gtsearch.php
and then fill the searchform there, everything's fine. I get a good search result page with my adsense Google ads wher I decided to put in (on the right side actually)
The results are filtered ok by the parameters I choosed on Google CSE pages.

But one thing refuses to work : it is the dam...d searchform in the navbar. It only makes this result : It opens the normal vB searchresult page with:
"Please specify some words or valid user names to search on. There were no matches for those that you specified."

Why is it so ?

Search box code:
<form action="http://www.rmysite.com/forums/gtsearch.php" id="cse-search-box">
<div>
<input type="hidden" name="cx" value="partner-pub-xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" />
<input type="hidden" name="cof" value="FORID:9" />
<input type="text" name="q" size="31" />
<input type="submit" name="sa" value="Rechercher" />
</div>
</form>
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.google.com/coop/cse/brand?form=cse-search-box&lang=fr"></script>

Searchresults code
<div id="cse-search-results"></div>
<script type="text/javascript">
var googleSearchIframeName = "cse-search-results";
var googleSearchFormName = "cse-search-box";
var googleSearchFrameWidth = 600;
var googleSearchDomain = "www.google.fr";
var googleSearchPath = "/cse";
</script>

hello Princeton.

we upgraded from 3.6.8 to 3.7 so here's hoping u can make a 3.7 version for this if u have the time. :)

Princeton, how can we add this search box code only for gtsearch.php file ?
We do not want search box to be displayed across the navbar .

I had the same problem when searching in Arabic
the results were showing ??????? as i am not using UTF encoding :)

howevr i managed to solve the problem,
for you to get it working right:
go to the google code (within your admincp)
and change the encoding from UTF-8 to the Hebrew encoding

in other words:
replace
<input type="hidden" name="ie" value="UTF" />
with this one:
<input type="hidden" name="ie" value="windows-1255" />

How can i manage that the vBulletin Search Function isn't shown to guests, but the Google Adsense Search does? (Navbar)

I haven't read the entire thread and maybe I ought to before asking, but does anyone have a demo where I can see this in action?

I also second the question above - can it replace the built in search by default?

This is a great mod! The only thing I wish were possible was a way to have the search results account for chronology, with the newest ones first, as VB would do. I don't see how to do it, but perhaps one of you geniuses has figured that out...;)
