Self Delete: Allow users to self-delete their account

What is it? This modification allows users to self-delete their account if they have permission. This modification is a port to vB 3.6.8 from a port to vB 3.5.3 of AlphaWolf's 'Self Delete' modification for vB 3.0.3.

New Features: This latest port comes with the following new features:

Can permit or deny self deletion usage by usergroup
Can force cool off time period before deletion occurs
Can send confirmation code to user via PM and/or email
Can receive reason for deletion via email if provided
Can send email to user confirming deletion by usergroup
User can stop deletion if user is in cool off time period

Requirements: vB 3.6.6+ as template hooks are used (only tested on vB 3.6.8)

Does it work on vB 3.5 and vB 3.6? See the requirements.

Don't know why I'm posting this, since it's not supported.

Downloaded...followed all directions to the tee. Set permissions...made sure everything was configured as it should be. Doesn't work...nothing shows up in user profile for those Usergroups I set the self-delete permissions for.

Just thought I'd give an update...

I did what was suggested and made sure I had the hooks I needed in both the navbar and USERCP_SHELL templates...uploaded all files to their respective folders and imported the product again...it still didn't work.

So I went over everything I did...over and over. I was ready to give up hope when I just simply ran the the Repair and Optimize table feature within the Admin CP...

Guess what? It's working...

When using this mod, and a member self deletes, does it leave their posts, like when you delete a member in the AdminCP, and just change it to "Guest" or does it prune their posts as well? I don't want to swiss cheese my board, so if using this mod will also remove a user's posts when they self delete I will need to know that before installing. Thanks in advance!

I Have Three Questions:

I think the users have the right to ask for a acount delete. I cannot only Ban if they ask for a delete. There are personal data and so on. I think it's a right, shows respect to the user... he registered and he can "unregister" himself. A kind of "opt-out".

As a Admin I never delete a account, just ban - unless asked by the user.

In that Case, is Better Not to Delete the Account, but simply Change the Name of it via Admin Control Panel, and Delete all the Personal Information of the User, and of course Change the Password of the Account for the User Never to Access it Again!! ;)

All the Information of the IPs is Recorded for the User, and is Important to Locate Spammers and Other Non Welcomed Persons in this Communities!! ;)

It totally changed my template, took my logo away and everything was just so unrecognizable. Which templates should I revert, how do I get there and how do I go about doing it? Several reasons.
First is that I would like people to test my modified version of this hack before I release it as my own product. After all, testing is good :)
Second is that I'd prefer, for simplicity, that the two hacks were merged into one. Why have two very similar hacks? Why not just have one hack with the option to toggle between the two modes of behaviour? My version of calorie's mod includes a setting in vB options that toggles between either using my "disable, but don't delete" method, or using calorie's "really remove them from the database" method. Calorie could include my code in this mod, adding another option to the mod with no effort required on his part.

If he decides that he doesn't want to use my code, I will probably release my own version of the virtual self delete hack, with the ability to do both what calorie's mod can do and also support the virtual or "fake" deletion behaviour. If calorie really doesn't want me using his code in my mod, I could probably strip out his code and create an entirely different fake deletion mod, based on the same principles, but without using this code. I really don't want to do this, however, as I would consider it reinventing the wheel, and hence, a waste of effort. I think it would be much better if calorie included my code in his mod, or at least, replied here saying that it would be OK for me to create a development fork of his mod to explore adding to the virtual/fake deletion code... maybe they could be merged later once the fake deletion part of it has been tested for awhile and I've added a few more things that I think would be nice to add.

Yes, simply changing their usergroup back to any other usergroup will completely reverse the effect of the "deletion". However... I advise against doing this, because if you do, then users will quickly figure out that "deleted" accounts *aren't* really deleted.

In future, I plan to have the option to either phrase this as a "delete" mod (useful if you don't re-activate accounts that users want deleted, but you want to keep them on file anyway)... or a disable mod (useful if you don't want to suggest to your users that their accounts are gone forever, or you aren't able to do so because you sometimes reactivate them).

I'd also like to add a "permit self re-enable" option, which, if enabled, causes the account to be un-deleted when the owner logs in and clicks a link. If disabled, behaviour would be as currently, where once deleted, the account cannot be used and admin intervention is required to re-enable it.

It would probably be possible for me to expand this fake deletion system into a system whereby users could choose, from a set drop-down menu, a list of usergroups to move their account to. Deletion would be one of those options... but there might be other options, too... like newbies having a choice of setting their account to the "Men" or "Women" groups, and getting access accordingly (but, that doesn't necessarily mean that the admin would have to allow movement from the Men group to the Women group, or vice versa!).

In effect this system could be expanded to a usergroup movement flowchart, where admins define which usergroups allow their members to move to which other usergroups. Allowing all accounts to set themselves "deleted" (fake deleted, I mean) might be one option there.

3.7 beta (i think here) all works, anyone know about the blank email sent to webmaster account after the 'whatever marked for deletion' email? usually after the cool off period the webmaster then gets a blank

Compatibility with this "Self Delete: allow users to self-delete their account" mod by calorie is provided in the form of a very easy integration... simply replace one of the files calorie's mod uses with the one that I provided in this post (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=1441528&postcount=33).

Hmmm... seem to have a problem, when the cool off period is set to 0 accounts are deleted straight away, but when i set it to 60, accounts don't delete, even when running the hourly cleanup crons. Everything worked fine before 3.7, can anyone help?

For some reason 'cron_script_cleanup_hourly' was not specified as the Hook Location in the 'Self Delete Cron Script Clean' plugin, the field was just blank despite installing/uninstalling the .xml several times :confused:.

Unless you are a Member who is willing to start to self delete itself. Then you can see it :)

thanks for responding.. I was checking with a test account and did not see the stop delete button, or anything in the nav bar. I think I was reading that I have to add hooks to the template. I also enabled the debug mode, but still just get that white page. Already tried uninstall & reinstall, didnt help.

figured it out: during the upgrade somehow the setting of the usergroup ("Can Self Delete ") was set to "no" - set it back to yes and it works like a charm with 3.8.1

Isn't this feature supposed to reset the username to "Guest"? All it seems to do is change the user title to Guest, the username remains. Can anyone point me to where this change is in the code so I can modify it to change the username too? Earlier versions did this, but 3.8 seems to fail...

Well I get an email stating "username" has be slated for deletion, when the person is then deleted, I receive an email but its 100% a white blank page, please advise if you can, I guess its just a phrase missing but its nice to know who was deleted.

I have installed this and it works, but I wish there was an option for a less secure version that didn't require the email confirmation.

Installed it with fix but everything except the deletion works...
So everything around: email notice, deletion form...works...
But if you set the hook and click delete my account it says: This account cannot be deleted.

Of course I set the option for the group to be able to delete theirselves...

Any suggestions ?

By the way: It´s on the newest version...so 3.8

Ok, i just looked it up...

$config['SpecialUsers']['undeletableusers'] = '';

was the first thing I found.

So I entered a value for test reasons...1 so admin account.

$config['SpecialUsers']['undeletableusers'] = '1';

Nothing changed...

$config['SpecialUsers']['superadministrators'] = '1';

seems to be ok as well... :(

BTW: The user I try to delete...well the test user, I registered and which I try to delete has the ID 147...

My problem is the deletion doesn't work..
Everythings fine, user gets mail i got the email and he clicked YES, but he's not deleted at the end.
No error etc.
"Allow self-deleting" is on YES!

Since i updated to 3.8.3 it wont work anymore. :(

After the user accepted on profile.php?do=delacc all i get is a white page on profile.php

No, this was the first thing i checked. They are still allowed to delete themselfes.

Otherwise it would be very strange to offer the option to delete your account and end it with a white page instead of simply not showing the option.

This one would be perfect ... if I could determine a number of posts also.
If the member has more than x posts, this function isn't possible.
I'd like to cool off the member myself or delete him myself. ;)

apparently does not seem to function of the Cronjob.

Addon functions less than 3.8.4, however, one has to do "Securitytoken" started.
