Searching archives

How far back can one search for a post that's been archived? Is there a limit, and if so, how can this be extended?

The posts in the archive are the same as the posts in your forum. Nothing "gets archived". It's just trimmed down and more search engine friendly version of your site. Posts will stay indefinitely unless you do something to remove them.

there is no archive or backup elements in vbulletin...

when you search it is not the date that is important but the number of search results... each search can be triggered to specific fields or dates when you go to the advanced search page, but basically, it is the number of results that will do the cutoff
