I have come upon this hack/add on showing sub cats of threads on main page as "underlinks" see picture attached.

So does anybody know this hack or addon ? How can i show subcats on mainpage main theme as links. ?

It's not a hack, it's a included feature ;)

Options -> Forum Listings Display Options -> Depth of Sub-Forums

Or, if you search a little you can find other options. Here is one that will arrange the sub-forums in to columns:
