What is it?

This modification adds the MySpace & FaceBook icons to the Postbit/Postbit_legacy & MEMBERINFO templates. It will display and link to the member's myspace and facebook profiles from there postbit and profiles.

How is it done?

- 2 Image uploads
- 2 Profile fields
- 2 Template edits

I did not copy any of his code. He said he was going to try and add it to the member profile, so I went ahead and did it.

Instructions and images and located in the .zip folder attached to this post.

UPDATES:

v2.0:

- Added stylevar so that it cuts down 2 temp edits.
- Changed image directory to /forum/images/YOURSKIN/misc instead of /forum/images/misc.
- Fixed </if> coding error.

No real need to update or re download if you have it working already! This update is mainly for user's that have never installed or can't get it working.

Just one minor template edit. This was brought to my attention by jmurrayhead. Go to the MEMBERINFO template.

Replace the XX's with appropiate field numbers that you created from the above post.
Also replace the YOURFORUM with your forum URL.

All it does is take the field that you enter in the custom fields in put them in the input fields under profile page. In order for it to display the user will have to enter in the custom fields which makes this kind of pointless to begin with. I do not know how to make the input field it's own variable. Maybe someone can figure that out and edit it?

Maybe someone can figure that out and edit it?.I've been playing around with this, because thats where i would like the inputs. i'm not sure if this can be done without a plugin?

I've installed these but it the data in the filed is not getting put after the / so it just goes to the main myspace/facebook page =/

check to see if the URL is typed correctly and also make sure your that 1. you have the field filled out meaning your username/id saved in your member profile and 2. that you replaced the XX in the code with the field number you set up in the ACP.

My images don't show up, strange!!!!
Make sure you correct the URL to go to the exact location your images are stored. For example, I don't have a folder called "forum" so I had to modify the URL to:

http://www.mypage.com/images/mics/myspace.gif

instead of

http://www.mypage.com/forum/images/misc/myspace.gif

also- the reason that many people are not seeing the myspace and facebook icons in their forum is that they go in the misc images folder, and if you simply upload the "Images" folder it will not go there. It would be better if you didn't capitalize the "Images" folder and also added a "misc" folder with the icons inside of that so people could just upload the contents of the "upload" folder.

There is no editprofile template - it is modifyprofile.

I also noticed that if a user doesn't have an Instant Messenger listed, then the links won't show up like they should and the user ID's will just display in the regular profile section.

There is no editprofile template - it is modifyprofile.

Where in the instructions is this? I could not find it. The only template edits are in postbit/postbit legacy and MEMBERINFO. Unless I forgot and am missing it.

You mean, if they don't AIM, MSN, Yahoo, or Skype in the one of the other profile fields, the myspace and facebook images don't work? I tried this and didn't have a problem.

If they don't have either of those, then nothing appears under "Contact" in the user profile.

I worked on it for a while and was able to fix it by changing this in MEMBERINFO:

to this:

that doesnt work either...

In the MEMBERINFO and Postbit tempates try replacing:

That should work because I looked and your images are showing up in that directory.


Mine are in the correct directory. Something is wrong with the coding.


Nothing is wrong with the coding at all. I bet it's just a miss guided image directory. Try entering the actual URL in the code like the I did earlier in this post and see if that works.

From the Admin CP Go to User Profile Fields on the left navigation menu and click Add new profile field

Select 'Single-Line Textbox' and go from there.

This mod has nothing to do with plugins. It's all template edits.

To upload images you have to do that via FTP through a separate program like FlashFXP or SmartFTP. I believe some people even use the FTP Manager located in some cPanels.

The postbit and/or postbit_legacy templates are located in Styles & Templates > Style Manager. From there click the drop down menu and click edit templates. Click the >> to expand all the templates in the list and navigate to the postbit/postbit_legacy templates.

Instructions say Private Field: Yes
(Not that there's anything wrong with that... :D) but this will disable viewing to default group settings like Registered and Unregistered. Setting Private Field to No allows viewing right along with default Aim, Yahoo and the like.

The facebook links just take you to your own profile instead of the persons site you are clicking,how do i sort that,the links are correct as they say in your instructions

Make sure you adjust the feild number in the link code.

Hi, thank you for this. I thought I did everything correct but obviously I didn't. My myspace page URL is showing up in the additional information section not the contact section and I don't see the gifs and it doesn't show up as a link just a url. Do you have any recommendations or idea of what I did wrong?

cool hack the only problem i am having is the fields are showing up in the additional information box under occupation. I think your plan was to have them show up where the aim and skype boxes are. I followed your instructions that came with the download. Any suggestions

queengoc: I don't know why it wouldn't be showing up, from what I can tell you've done nothing wrong. I would go back and re do everything to make sure it's right.

kingmotox: You probably put the code in the wrong spot in the MEMBERINFO template. Go back and check.

cool hack the only problem i am having is the fields are showing up in the additional information box under occupation. I think your plan was to have them show up where the aim and skype boxes are. I followed your instructions that came with the download. Any suggestions

I am having the same issue. If I find a fix I will post it here.

EDIT: I have found that the MySpace info and/or FaceBook info will show under Additional Information in the Member Profile simply because they are additional Profile Fields and will list there in order. I still cannot get the Icon/Link to show with the other Instant Messaging icons.

Ok, got it now.

In MEMBERINFO template, the ADD BELOW text has wrong code.

There are 2 lines with URL links for each MySpace and FaceBook. (4 lines total). All should end with </a></td> but 2 of them end with </td></a>

Fix that in your template and it will show up in the Member Profile area correctly.

As for the info showing up in the Additional Information area, that would be if you have set the Profile Fields to NOT be private/hidden, or if you are admin etc. and have permission to see hidded fields.

I am having a problem getting the images to show up.

The forum template i have didn't have a "misc" folder already existing so I created my own so this is where the images are.

I saw before that the scrypt originally included the www.YOURFORUM.com/forums/images/YOURTEMPLATE/misc/ code so i reworked that into the code to see if that was the problem but i had no luck.

You can check out the problem on my site. It's www.iatgaming.net . Just check out any post made by me "Brokenman" on the site and you will see. It displays in the right section, but images do not appear, just the text.

for 3.7? No, I don't use 3.7 so I wouldn't have anyway of testing it. I didn't say it would work, I said it could work with some code tweaking in the 3.7 templates.

To replace 'Instant Messaging' with Contact in vB 3.7.x go to Phrase manager in admincp
search for text "instant_messaging" (Search Phrase Variable Name Only), click edit beside Instant Messaging, put Contact in the edit box on the bottom... or what ever you want to name it.

no you don't understand.....its not about changing them its about finding them either one of them.

I can't even find <legend> in the memberinfo template... something has obviously changed in a major way here.

Replace [fieldXX] with the field number of your Facebook profile field

Replace ../images/misc/im_facebook.gif with the location of your facebook gif, and rename it accordingly.

Add New Phrase in Phrase Manager with varname: 'visit_x_facebook_profile' and text: 'Visit {1}'s Facebook Profile'

Search in admincp Phrases for $vbphrase[instant_messaging], replace with what ever you want. I chose Messaging and Social Networking.

This worked except for some minor issues. In the link on the instructions it shows for example: www.facebook.com/user/profile.php?id=1234567. However, the 'user' folder should be removed otherwise the finished link will redirect you to a non-working url.
