Subforum threads in Parent Forum?

I've got an idea, and I'm wondering if this has been done before...

My site has content writers, and moderators. Currently they are two seperate forums, and we don't want the two types of staff to see what the others write, but....

It would be nice if we could have 1 forum with threads which:
1) all staff can see...
2) only moderators can see..
3) only writers can see...

This would vary thread by thread...

Possible? Done before?

Very interested to find out, I think this could be more useful than just for my particular situation...

with the permissions per forum, you can fix which usergroup have access, can view, can read... so you just have to play with permissions...

per forum, yeah, but how do i do it per thread?

Or how do i display subforum treads in the parent forum?
