I see phpbb now has Jabber/XMPP support for notifications. Google has linked Jabber to all the major IM networks, so this has got quite some potential.
I can see this could be used for:
Subscribed threads instant notification.
New PM notification or even PM to IM messages.
Buddy online notification.
There are probably other ways to use this functionality as well.

Absolutely. I really hope something like this will become available for vbulletin.

This website explains a lot about Jabber and google talk:
- how to integrate Jabber into webpages
- how to create chat rooms, accessible from your members their IM
- How to add plugins to connect to AIM, MSN, ICQ etc.
http://www.jabber.org/admin/
Also very interesting in regards to setting up a Jabber server with chat room functionality:

I think this is extremely interesting to big board owners and admins that want to connect to their members their desktop and IM.

Note that vbulletin Germany has already been working on this:
Advanced Jabber-Integration (http://www.vbulletin-germany.org/showthread.php?t=1189)
It has just started and currently a few notifications can be sent by Instant Messenger. But more is to come.
It seems that when using this hack and tying it to LDAP authentication (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=145188) and openfire (http://www.igniterealtime.org/projects/openfire/plugins/userservice.jar) you can create full jabber integration.
Jabber and Openfire have plugins to also integrate practically any major IM network into your network. Read: into your chat room and vb notification system.

Freely translated: An English version of this hack is planned, but the help of an English coders would very much be appreciated. So is anyone up for this?

Wow. Is it easy to install/support? I mean, I'm lloking for something that will allow users on my forum to send instant PMs to each other. And Jabber seems to be the right way to go. Also, I'd like to have something that will not make me re-do default templates after every upgrade. I thought that vB developers should integrate Jabber but they don't seem to bother - at least nothing on that is mentioned about 4.0... You think the hack you mentioned is worth installing and taking care of... Just removed Flashchat from my forum, you know... 8)

The hack has been slowly evolving and is getting better and better. But it needs more development to satisfy my needs. But I am fairly confident that it will evolve further. Try it. There already is good functionality.

I'd love to see this get polished too. Gtalk outnumbers all other IM clients for my members, yet is strangely invisible to vBulletin's standard profile IM info!
