Hello ricardoNJ,
This mod works in vB 3.7.3.
Hey, I installed it in my Vbulletin 3.7.4 and it works. I used only the thumbnail in posts function and not the search and tags options that mentioned in this thread. (***Installed and Nominated ***)
I wonder if we could find a way to make the plugin to search a little bit further into the posts of a thread and
a) find an image thumb to use (deeper in the trhead) automatically If the first posts don't have any images.
b) If the administrator (or in general we could have permissions for usergroups for yes/no to the thread-starters) is not happy with the automatic result, then he could be able to set what image the admin like through the image attachments of every posts in a thread (choose what he want by choosing the apropriate image attachment or even attach an external image). :-)
Also..., because I have a forum for art (3D Modeling) and what I am searching for is a plugin that can do the below:
1. Admin should be able to "Special Rate a thread" (or better choose it via normal thread selection) and put it to an Thread Archive Spotlight that can be found in the forumhome.(something like the Recent album pics on forum home plugin, but instead of albums pics, I want to have threads and a thread thumbnail and when someone click the thumbnail, the forum should land him to the appropriate thread...!!!
2. If someone press the Archive link/button to the forum home (it should be one there for this kind of plugin), then, all the spotlighted threads history should appear as thumbnail board with titles above (or without titles), with several pages (for example we could have table of thumbnails of 5 Horizontal X 10 Vertical Thumbnails and number of pages...!!!)
I am willing to pay for this kind of plugin for the thread Archive Spotlight. If everyone knows something I would like to hear it (PM me):-)

None that I know of.
FYI: I posted that thread thumbnails would be a good enhancement to vB4.0 on vB.com's vB4.0 WishList forum (now a closed forum) and was notified that my request was deleted because there already was a request of that nature on their v4.0 list and, so...., maybe, just maybe, we'll see this simple, priceless thread thumbnail mod incorporated into vB's Version 4.0 base code. We will see.

Geek Article and Review System (GARS) LITE (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=108514&highlight=gars) or the paid GARS (http://www.thevbgeek.com/forumdisplay.php?f=26)
Header images are uploaded images from article / review authors
which are shown in threadlists and stored by GARS but not vB
attachment system.
It would be interresting how search results from Thread Thumbnail
and GARS get together.

Cocko,
I got on thevBGeek forum; this GARS Module update/whatever has yet to be written by them; the vB3.5.3 GARS LITE Version 1 on vB.org doesn't contain the threadblock.php file.
Get me a copy of this threadblock.php and I'll see if I can figure out how to incorporate this into displaying uploaded images in vB.
I probably can't help you here, but, we will see.

Howdy!
I upgraded 3.7.4 from 3.6.8 and I can't get Thread Thumbnail to work.
Thread Thumbnails worked great with 3.6.8.
Is it something I might be doing wrong or is it not compatible with 3.7?
Thanks James

James,
Yes, this mod works in vB3.7.4, also in vB3.8.0 betas & RC1.
After reverting your threadbit template(s) to vB374 did you re-add the thread thumbnail code to the threadbit template(s)? The threadbit template IF statement you need to update is a bit different from vb3.6.8's threadbit template but you should be able to figure it out, where to add Jason's TT code.
If you have the 'Thread Thumbnail - Search' plugin turned ON - Did you add the TT code to the vB3.7.4 search.php file? (see Post # 112 on Page 8, the change also applies to vB374)
If you have the 'Thread Thumbnail - Tag Search' plugin turned ON - Did you add the TT code to the vB3.7.4 tags.php file? (see Post # 169 on page 12, this change also applies to vB374)
I have a bit lengthy (too lengthy to post) write up on installing just the forum Thread Thumbnails mod. I can PM you it if you're interested.

Hi,
I am using vbulletin 3.7.4 version. I have enabled the display thumbnails option for viewing thumbnails in the thread by using the hack thread thumbnails.
I have also enabled the view image inline to view full images in the posts.
I want the attachment to be seen as a full image instead of a thumbnail in the posts.
Please let me know how i can see both the thumbnails and the attachments.

Keep thumbnails on, but edit the thumbnail template to display the full size image. If that's not enough info I explained exactly what to do earlier in this thread, just find my post.

I have recently installed this mod, which seems to be working quite well, but for some reason when I go into the Quick Links >> New Posts, a bunch of code is displayed and it doesn't give me any of the new posts within the forum. Did I do something wrong? I do not have the thumbnail search enabled either, could that be it?

StormLily,
The Thread Thumbnail - Search plugin is installed as 'Active' along with the forum Thread Thumbnail plugin when you do the install. If you have not also tweaked Search.php, adding Jason's code, you will get database errors when you do a New Post search. You need to go into Plugin Manager to turn plugins On/Off, to turn this plugin Off, if applicable.
Does this help?

The search.php supplied with this mod works in vB3.6.8-9. It most likely works in vB3.6.10-12.
To use the Thread Thumbnail - Search plugin in either/both vb3.7.x and vB3.8.x you need to tweak your copy of search.php, then turn this Thread Thumbnail - Search plugin ON. See my post on Page 8, Post #112 for the search.php code tweak.
Hope this helps. ~OZ
Always test changes first in your testvb instance.
Rename, NEVER DELETE, your current copy of search.php, e.g., rename it to search_original.php. Easy to go back to it if things go awry.

Hello Lulubelle,
If you're talking about the Threads in Forum displayed thumbnails add Width and Height to the thread thumbnail <img src= threadbit template code where applicable.
For example, try this (change 50 to whatever size value you end up liking):
<img src="attachment.php?attachmentid=$thread[attachmentid]&stc=1&thumb=1" alt="" width="50" height="50" border="0" />

this is a great little plug-in that i've been using almost since i set my board up
i notice it's marked as "not supported" so i guess no tweak was ever released to get it to create thumbnails from embedded [img] files, a facility that was requested early on in the thread?
(for some reason if i search the thread for "[img]" it returns 0 posts, and i don't want to wade through all 19 pages if somebody knows the answer straight off)
theOZer
01-30-2009, 02:20 PM
You are correct. In this mod, at least, no tweak was ever released to create thumbnails from embedded [img] files. This mod simply, and so effectively, can only grab/see/display a thumbnail 1) if the thumbnail was created thru vB Attachment Manager and 2) if the thumbnail is in the thread's first post.
Possibly doing a search thru all of vB.org's forums may turn something up.

thanks for the reply, i rather thought that would be the case
as i say, the obvious query word "img" or "[img]" returns no results, i guess because there aren't enough letters in "img"... and in any case, if this mod doesn't handle embedded images, then i don't really want to use any other mod - as this one mostly works fine apart from this (very minor) issue

Hi,
first of all, I really like this mod!
I need only a simple info :
There is a way to show the thumbnail in the forum main page ?
For example : 8 inline thumbnail to the upper part of the forum (or lower, etc)
In the past I had a forum with 8 thumbnail from photopost, now I remove it but I still need to have the thumbnail !
Thanks a lot!

been using for some time now. it was just what my site really needed.
the thing is, i've always been finding ways for the thread thumbnails to load better on IE.
it's just so much more slower when all the thumbnails have to be loaded before the page actually displays
plus, on some pcs, the thread thumbnails hang their IE browsers. could it be the intense loading for the browser?
theOzer or anyone out there found a better way to load the thumbnails? <DIV> instead of tables perhaps?

I just burned 30+ minutes perusing vB.org looking for a hack that would create a thumbnail when someone posts a linked image. I couldn't find anything.
I've also tried to find a commercial software package that offers this feature. No luck for me so far; maybe I need to improve my web searching abilities; maybe.
I've seen some impressive forums where on the main page there's an array of thumbnails that when clicked on take you to the post, etc... Where to find out how to do this or where to buy the code to do this is currently beyond my reach. Hmmm.

Hey 6piston,
Many issues come into play concerning performance and page displays in vB.
How many mods/hacks do you have running in addition to this TT mod. Don't forget their pull on your forum reserves.
This mod can't be DIV'd or JavaScripted or swanktified.
But, try adding Width and Height to your <img tag (see page 19, post #278).
Just the Width parameter works for IE but you need both Width and Height parameters for this to work in FireFox and other browsers, so use both parameters.

If you would like thumbnails to display in the search results, you will need to replace your search.php page with the one in the zip file. Unfortunately vBulletin forgot to include a hook variable where it is necessary for this to work. I have added 1 line to search.php with the hook variable. There is no way around this until vbulletin adds it themselves.
what can i add in the search.php .
My Vbulletin Version is 374

hi the ozer
thanks for the help.
well, the real problem is with the older or messed up old IE's that some of my users complains about. it works fine with standard or new browsers. even my Nokia phone loaded the page with no problems. Just thought there'd be a way to speed things up like some other classifieds sites.
are you saying that if i add the witdh and height tags, the page will load better?
I have a rather busy forums section which i use for classifieds. This has made an impact on the server loads right after i used the TT plugin. it's something i will bever remove though. It has improved the site experience so much\
I have since added another quad core server, so server load is back on track.
if anyone want to have a look at how i used the thread thumbnails, this is it

6piston,
Concerning older versions of IE. Trying to cater your forum to work in older IE versions is honorable but… why? If someone has IE7 upgrade or IE8 upgrade (dropped today!) or, worse yet, IE6 upgrade "fear," smolly. Upgrade. Much to my amazement and joy was the discovery that the latest version of Mozilla’s FireFox seems to be THE browser to use when viewing a vB forum. So, put a ‘works best with…’ line hidden somewhere in your footer using a really really small font (visualize a cute smiling smilie here).
No. I apologize and after rereading see my suggestion as misleading about performance. But, have you tested using width & height? To actually reduce your thumbnails’ size (AdminCP > vBulletin Options > Message Attachment Options > Thumbnail Size) might improve display delay but its messy and not recommended by me. Always first test changes like this in your testvb.
My initial post here about using width and height was for someone who just wanted to tidy up, display smaller thumbnails in a list.
Nice web site and utilization of this TT mod. Remember, any hookname that “knows” a thread’s thread.firstpostid can be used to grab 1st post attachment info, too. For example, I found one in tags.php, hookname: tags_list_query_data (see pg 12, post 169). How you’ve shaped up your forum shows me you should be able to take this FYI tidbit and run with it. Good luck.
Regards, theOzer
P.S.
Curiously, IE8 was officially released as I (pre)typed my reply diatribe here. IE8 seems to "handle" using HighSlide in Image Resizer (which I use with NO image resizing, just HighSlide). Hmmm...

Finally installed and got it working.
Now, I really need the thread thumb to show up above the thread itself on showthread.
I already have a spot for the thread title above the first post, that works, but I can't get the thumbnail to show up.
I copied and modified the template code from the threadbit, and inserted this where I want it to show up:
<if condition="$tt_displaythumbs">
<if condition="($thread['attachmentid']) AND ($thread['thumbsize'])">
<img src="attachment.php?attachmentid=$thread[attachmentid]&stc=1&thumb=1" alt="" border="0" align="left" />
</a>
<else />
<img src="$stylevar[imgdir_misc]/nothumb.jpg" alt="" border="0" />
</if>
</if>
Nothing show up. Is there something else I need to do? Like add jason's hook code to showthread.php or something?

Does it let you show the first attachment of the first post of a thread in the thread (and search, and tag listings)? If there's a commercial product that we can use instead of this I'd be willing to go that route.
Right now the last piece of the puzzle is being able to display the image thumbnail above the thread, near the top of the showthread template. Do you know if that's possible?

kyle1745,
Thread Thumbnails in (your selected) forums works in all vB38x versions so far. You should not need to make any changes/tweaks to this mod's base thread thumbnails plugin after a vB update.
To display thread thumbnails in your Search lists and/or your Tags list you need to tweak search.php and/or tags.php (like we have had to for all previous vB version updates since 368).
If you have the 'Thread Thumbnail - Search' plugin turned ON - Did you change, add the TT code to the vB3.8.x search.php file? (see Post # 112 on Page 8 or do a Search this Mod looking for search.php, whatever)
If you have the 'Thread Thumbnail - Tag Search' plugin turned ON - Did you change, add the TT code to the vB3.8.x tags.php file? (see Post # 169 on page 12 or do a Search this Mod looking for tags.php, whatever)
In my testvb instance I successfully upgraded to vB3.8.x, after adding the TT code to both search.php and tags.php, and both plugins work for me.

Copy and paste the postbit_attachmentimage template contents into the postbit_attachmentthumbnail template (overwrite the current postbit_attachmentthumbnail contents). And leave thumbnail creation on.
I do this and it works fin to show fullsize of attachmentimage in posts with thumbnail creation switched to on.
but
when I do this to insert attachmentimage in the post, I get the thumbnail image??

Adding Thread Thumbnails to Tag Search
Here's my New & Improved threadbit template change to thread thumbnail both regular searches and Tag searches. Your current TT code may differ from mine, for sure.
What do you mean TT code may differ? I made all the changes but alas all I see is the no post icon :(, I am sure I missed something. Any Help? :D
Good Thing is that the Forum Search and The Forums Still show the thumbnails albeit all of them are the full size, wish I could change that.

hi theOZer and neverbored
sorry to bother you guys again,
This is regarding the search result thumbs be it the new post / regular search and threads by users. I really need to get it working actually
I have been reading your replies over and over again and editing the search.php countless of times using the one from the zip and the default one i have and then editing it with your code and I still can't get the thumbnails to display correctly on the search results.
I have also tried your Thread Thumbnail - all forums plugin xml code theOZer and then disabling the stand Thread Thumbnail plugin and still no good.
I got it HALF working and this is what i found:
-New post thumbnails work but only in 2nd page
-Certains terms when searched will display thumbnails in the search result, other terms when search will not display any thumbs at all and looks just like the default search result page.
-Find all Threads by User when clicked on certain members will display thumbnails in search result. other members not at all, like default.
Have anyone had this before?
Thanks!

Have you rebuilt the attachment counters? Try adding a new thread with an img attachment and see if the new one works. I've run into situations where sometimes existing threads with existing thumbs don't show up.
Don't replace the search.php file entirely -- just edit your existing vB version's search.php and add the single line (or 2, including the comment line). I think it's around line 2600-ish. You shouldn't have to fiddle with the search.php much.

6piston,
which vB version?
vB templates or other?
other issues, like, are you running just vB or do you run vBSEO, whatever?
If you have Manage Attachments turned on, and if in the first thread post and the user used vB Manage Attachments to load an image this mod will display that attachment's thumbnail, if coded to do so. The mod's trick is an outer join that relies on the fact that there's a thread first post id that can find/grab the associated attachment postid, enabling the outer join, piggybacking the attachment's row info onto the select.
Create a testvb. Do all your testing there.
After I set up a clean/virgin vB383 testvb, I put together a 'My Way to Install Thread Thumbnails' write up as I updated this testvb to use thread thumbnails in forums/new posts, searches, and tag searches. PM me if you'd like a pdf of this write up.

hi Arkham
Do yours work fully? Then i gotta try your way right now.
I'll also try to use a fresh copy of 3.7.2 search.php again and include the lines.
Let me get this right:
-Fresh 3.7.2 search php
-Add the 2 Jason lines that is included in the TT's Zip's search.php
Thanks!

hi theOZer thanks for the reply!
it's 3.7.2
I do have VBSEO. The thread thumbnails in my selected forums run beautifully right from the start. so i'm not sure if it's anything to do with VBSEO
My main goal is to get the
-regular searches with thumbnails to work in those selected forums.
-find all users' threads to also display the thumbs
Just in case it makes any difference, some of my search links aren't the default ones, for example, my "new post" links only display relevant new posts from certain forums:
http://www.site.com/search.php?do=getnew&exclude=57,52,56,53,54,83,72,55,29
I did try it without excluding the forums and it's the same.
I will also create a test site to do this :)
Please do PM me the pdf file you made. i;m sure it'll help me much! great job getting all of it to work and more :)

I have a question, when I have these forum permissions set for the unregistered not logged in user group:
Can View Forum: Yes
Can View Thread Content: No
Unregistered users can not see the thumbnail, is there a way they can see see the thumbnail even if they can't access the topics, thanks!!

After a little testing, my educated guess is apparently not. If you can't see the thread and the attachment is part of that thread, hmmmm.
If you have set up thumbnails to display in forum thread lists, new posts, searches, and tag searches hopefully that will be enough encouragement to make someone join, become a member of your forum, so they can see that thumbnailed image fully.

Great work
but I have a problem,
alone that I have not made, it is replace search.php ,
while I put id, it presents nothumbs pics in all forum
in other words, it reads the id and shows thumb in particular forums, but in all rest, it presents nothumb.
How I could have predetermined icons in rest forum, except of course from there that I have declared to it the id?
I'm using vb 3.8.3
Any help ?
Thanks

As of vB4 Beta 5 the thread thumbnail 'issue' still applies; there is no vB4 option anywhere to display on the forumdisplay.php thread listing the thread thumbnail next to the thread, nor in searches and/or tag searches. This truly befuddles me; why has this never been addressed; am I the only art forum out there with posted art attachments?
Well, anyhow, past the griping…
Things have really changed in vB4 and this mod, at first glance, will NOT be readily interfacable into the new scheme of things that vB has mixed up. Gone, gone are the $dataquery, $items and stuff like that, the Hooks I believe is what they are/were called.
So…
At this point I can not see a way to incorporate this mod’s approach into the vB4 templates and php.
Has anyone else had a gem of wisdom here as to how to proceed, once again, in finding a way in vB4 to display thread thumbnails of forum thread listings, search and tag search listings? Please let us know.

well, its easy to get the thumbnail to display, it just looks like crap lol I am messing around with the CSS now so as to have minimum impact on the default CSS for forumdisplay but gah!

Did the Author give you permission to take this over or port it to vb4? If not, I can't just post a vb4 version of this without his consent. If he did, then let me know.

Whoa dude.. whats with the attitude towards someone that is wanting and trying to help? I asked you a very simple question on if the original author had given you permission to take over his work. I looked at the Mod Post and didn't see a remark that he gave you permission to take it over and I wasn't going to sift through all the pages to see if he did. He also didn't mark it with REUSABLE CODE (meaning that anyone could borrow his code and release it). Marking a Modification as Un Supported does not mean that anyone can just take it over.
I am MORE than willing to create a new Mod for vb4, hell, I was going to just give YOU the code so that you could post it as a new mod and support it, but wow with the attitude. NOT the response I thought I'd get, but then again, it doesn't surprise me here anymore.

I dropped Jason Merchant an email via his site, in case that helps. Hopefully something will come of it.
I'm still shocked that this functionality isn't available in vB4 by default. It is absolutely required. (For everything from threads to articles to blogs...)

Hey this is a great mod, I love it!
I was wondering , is there a way use the latest attached image to the thread as a thumbnail, instead of the first one?
We are doing work in progress threads on my forum and usually the last attached image is more representative of the work done.
Cheers

Let me clear some things up as it seems there is some confusion here.
Any original work is automatically copyrighted to the author. This means that you can not use the code he/she has written without permission from the original author. It doesn't change anything if the original coder has not been online for some time or does not respond to your inquiries.
What you may do is:
- Modifiy the modification yourself to suite your needs. You are not allowed to redistribute such a derived work without the original authors permission.
- Create a new modification coded from scratch implementing the same idea. Such a self coded modification may be distributed at places of your choice.
Sorry.
I apologize.
I'll figure it out on my own. And, if I succeeed, I'll share my success with every one that has been following this mod and using this mod and needing the thumbnails to show in their forums.

Rare missfunction on our site.
We had it previously installed and worked properly for a long time.
As no cacheable being xml, did slow down perfomance with old server, so decided to disable temporary.
Now on new server, oopps !! doesn't work at all. Any error, any message, just not showing anything. (vB v3.7.3)
Nullparameter's version 2.2 is not working either.
Any suggestion ??
