Shoutbox without Ajax

Is something like this available ? A VB shoutbox without Ajax ? That Ajax just increases server load and it's still a problem moving the security problems from the server (PHP / ASP) to the client by using extensive Javascript.
For IPB some Shoutbox versions worked quite fine without any client-side Javascript - isn't there something compareable available for VB 3.6 ?
