How do I add subscriptions to registration as an option?

How do I add subscriptions to registration? I do want to clarify that I want it available on registration form as an option and not a mandatory aspect to register. I saw a mod that added it but was design to force people to register and that's NOT what I want.

Any guidance or assistance would be much appreciated. I am using 1.9.8.
