incorrect thread lengths after 3.6.4 -> 3.6.8

i recently upgraded vB for our forum from version 3.6.4 to 3.6.8. all seemed ok until we noticed some threads would list there being, say, 22 pages of replies when there were only 18 pages. clicking on the link to the 22nd page would link you to page 18. similarly, the listed number of posts per thread is now incorrect, showing 299 when only 280 exist.

i've tried shutting off the site and reindexing it to no avail. any advice is appreciated, as this has gone on for a while :(

Try rebuilding your caches.

Admin CP > Maintenance

dismounted, thx for your suggestion. have gone and rebuilt the post cache under adminCP > maintenance > update counters without success. i did this both while the board was turned off and while turned on, neither appear to have fixed the issue. additionally i ran a number of the other maintenance tasks under update counters without any effect

our board has ~40K posts on it, could this issue be due to user deletions or something else? clues appreciated.
