vBulletin Version Compatibility

This hack can be used with both vBulletin v3.6.x and v3.7.x. But it is highly recommended that you use the new hack with v3.7.x.


What Does This Hack Do?

This is hack gives your Super Moderators the option in the ModCP to now manually approve new user registrations, that before now only Administrators could do from the AdminCP.

This means you can now spread the load of manually approving members with your Super Moderators, leaving you the administrator more time to do other things.

This hack was created because I liked the idea of the request in this thread, and seems to have been requested quite a few times over the years.

There are no file or template changes at all and is fully phrased. You just need to upload 1 file, import 1 product and alter 2 vBulletin Options in the AdminCP.


Installation Instructions

Unzip product-jd_20070831.zip
Upload /upload/modcp/user_moderation.php to your <forum root>/modcp folder (overwrite existing uploaded file if upgrading).
Import product-jd_20070831.xml into vB using the AdminCP Product Manager (set Allow Overwrite to Yes if upgrading).
Under the User Registration Options section of vBulletin Options in the AdminCP:

Ensure Moderate New Members is set to Yes
Ensure Verify Email address in Registration is set to Yes

Hi jdsinclair,

Thank you very much for this mod. It has shown me an example of moving admin functions towards the moderators. My biggest headache after moving to vBulletin from phpbb (+category hierarchy mod) is that it has put the complete load of usergroup management on me (the admin) :(. I liked the way group moderators worked in the older setup where group moderators could add or remove users to from usergroups. Could you please also consider this as a mod request, i.e. a mod for giving some moderator permissions to add or remove users to from usergroups? ;)

As long as they have the Can Administer Users permission in the Administrator Permissions Manager, then yes they can.

They will see Users to Moderate in the Welcome to the vBulletin Admin Control Panel on the Control Panel Homepage.

I have been able to duplicate this. I never checked as moderators do not have a link to the ModCP as standard, so should never access it, as they do not know that it is there, but can access it if they know the url.

Version 1.0.1 will fix this issue.

This is not a real fix,
this conditional : is_member_of($vbulletin->userinfo,5,6) is just hide the link from moderators,
but they can still access to the page: http://www.site.com/modcp/user_moderation.php

Followed your instructions, but can't seem to find Moderate New Users in VB Options in the AdmnCP. Did I do something wrong, or am I looking in the wrong place?

Edited later: Oops, I just found it in the User Registration Options, and I already had it turned on. So no problem after all.

I'll give this a spin immediately and get back to you with any pertinent results although I am guessing it's going to work just great...

passing it onto Supermoderators instead of moderators was a smart call btw and no skin off of anyone's nose who really wants to implement this protocol on a regular basis...

I've had a consistent glitch with this. Often I'll see a couple registrations come through and I'll go to this area of the mod panel and it will say "no matches found". When I go to the usergroup manager and select "Users Awaiting Email Confirmation" it shows me the users Ids that have registered. What's the issue?

That is because it is actually the (COPPA) Users Awaiting Moderation group that is moderated, you are looking at the wrong usergroup.

If you require anymore help or support, then click Mark as Installed as you are obviously using this hack.

That doesn't make sense though, because it works part of the time. I have COPPA registration system set to disabled. Do you think it would fix the issue if I enabled that? BTW, I clicked on mark as installed. Thank you.

Verify Email address in Registration has to be set to Yes, as well.

You do not have to enable the COPPA Registration System.

Both emails came through to my account before I had a chance to check in. So I go to the link that leads to the moderator control panel and click on "new user registrations". It just means that they had not clicked the confirmation link in their confirmation emails, as they when they do, they will be moved to the (COPPA) Users Awaiting Moderation after that. That is when your mods can also approve registrations.

If you are moving people from the Users Awaiting Email Confirmation usergroup to the Registered Members usergroup, then you do not know if they have valid email addresses.

It may be that you do not understand how registration is meant to work, once you do, you will realise that this hack works exactly the way it should.

What I would advise you to do is register a test user yourself and follow through from signup to being a registered member.

How it works:
When you signup using the registration form, you are sent an email to the email address that you registered with. At this point your user is in the Users Awaiting Email Confirmation group. Once you have clicked on the confirmation email link to confirm your email address is valid (with this hack he is now added to the (COPPA) Users Awaiting Moderation group, without it they are now a registered member). Once they are in the (COPPA) Users Awaiting Moderation group, then you and your super moderators will have Users Awaiting Moderation, and not before then.

That was a quick lesson on how this hack works, I wrote this for my forum, and my staff (admins and super mods) have been using for months without any problems at all, and it runs succesfully for over 25 other sites.

The whole registration process is automatic until you, other admins and super mods have people who have confirmed their emails, then you will have users to moderate ;)

Is there any way to make it such that I can have a user in a certain usergroup instead of a super moderator. I want to have others ONLY moderate the user registrations and not be able to do anything else. Thus I don't want them to have full super moderator perms just to use this moderate user ability.

Nope, not without a custom hack and probably changes to vBulletin's core code to do it.

Try testing it with the Invite System disabled (it may bypass normal registration routines), see if there are any issues then, my staff have been using this for over 6 months without any problems, but then we do not have an invite system installed.

Unfortunately not, as it seems to be the case that the Invite system bypasses the normal registration process, and my hack strictly adheres to vBulletin's registration process.

Moderate New Users is turned on. Verify e-mail address too. But my SuperMods are not able to see Moderate New Users link in ModCP. I as admin can.

Administrators see the options in the AdminCP and SuperMods in the ModCP (that is why you have to upload user_moderation.php your modcp folder, and that is what gives the option for SuperMods to see the users requiring moderation.

There is not much that can go wrong with this have, and my staff have been using this for well over 8 months with no issues what so ever.

If you are sure you have double checked that you have done everything correctly and if you want me to take a look then feel free to PM me your site address, a temp admin user (with permissions to set vBulletin Options) a temp super mod and an temp ftp account with the appropriate permissions for your vBulletin installation,as without these I cannot help you. I will look at the problem when I have time, and even if I have a look, I can not guarantee that I will be able to fix it, but should be able to, so it is up to you what you want to do.

hey Mosh - how can I tweak this a bit so that the default is set to ignore instead of accept?

A couple of moderators have had trouble accidentally accepting when they were only intending to go over the profile. If the default were set to ignore, they would have to manually accept for the new member to be admitted.

I'm guessing it's in the php file but I don't know this stuff well enough to screw around with it.

nevermind Mosh...I actually sorted it out on my own. it was that enigmatic [checked=\"checked\"] phrase that needed to be moved to the ignore line and deleted from the accept line...

works just fine now...please let me know if there is anything more I should also do...this is a really great Mod btw...for those of us moving into manual registration it's really important...thanks for putting the time in on it.
