I want to make clear that my mod has nothing to do with Blogs.



1.- General information

vbJurnal it is a combination (in features but in interface too) of my former (Free versions) vbArticles and vbNews. What I'm delivering in features in this 1.0.0 version is the main mod. There are nearly dozens of additional features that can be add on it, but everything is depending on it's popularity. If I see lots of installations, sure I'll spend time to add more features.

Some of the additional features that I've in mind are:

Text Search
RSS feeds
Assign a future date for publishing
Rating and Reviews
Video upload
Attachments
Article Pagination
Chapters
etc etcPlease note that I'm not planing to add subcategories. I don't like it to become completitor of my commercial modules:rolleyes:

2.- Features

This module is mainly for use for Article posting with 1 photo. Unlike vbNews and vbArticles which are using 3nd party HTML editor, vbJurnal uses vB's Editor.
Editors choice Articles
Breaking Articles
Important Articles
Newest Articles by category
Most Active Authors (according to the number of post Articles)
All these blocks can be turn off in case that you don't need them, by setting 0 as the number of appearing articles
All these blocks are following the active category. eg Breaking news in main page shows articles from all categories. Breaking news while you're in X category shows breaking news from X category only.3.- Installation

Step 1: Open vbjournal.php file with a text editor like notepad. At line 9 you'll find a variable: $mydateformat = 'm/d/Y'; This is set to default US date format. You can change it according to your country's setting eg. for UK d/m/Y or for other European countries to d.m.Y or d-m-Y. You can also add the time if you want. eg 'd/m/Y H:ia' this will give 20/8/2007 14:15pm. The reason that I didn't used the internal vbdate function is because that some users from Scandinavian countries, Spain and France had problems with vbdate().
Step 2: Upload the contains of /forum directory to the same directory where you've installed vBulletin
Step 3: CMOD following directories to 777
/photos (inside vbjournal directory)
/tmp (inside vbjournal directory)
/thumbs (inside vbjournal/photos directory)
Step 4: For security reasons backup your database AND turn your board off
Step 5: Check at your AdminCP->vBulletin Options->Plugin/Hook System that Plugin system is enabled.
Step 6: From your AdminCP->Plugin System->Manage Products choose Add/Import Product and import the product: product_vbjournal.xml
Step 7: If you want to add a link to your nav bar then you must edit the NAVBAR template:Search For:

....or use any other word you want

Step 8: By default none usergroup has permissions to use vbjournal, so you need to give permissions to any group. Goto AdminCP->Usergroups->Usergroup Manager and edit any usergroup you like to give permissions.
Step 9: In your adminCP, under vbJournal, choose vbJournal options and configure it depending on your needs. If you can't see vbJournal's menu, press F5 to refresh the page, or logout and login again to your admincp.
Final: Now, you can access vbJournal at: www.youdomain.com/vb_installation/vbjournal.php (http://www.youdomain.com/vb_installation/vbjournal.php)4.- Copyright

No. I will not develop anymore Lite and Commercial versions of the same script. This is a Free, with no restrictions mod and depending on it popularity or not, it will grow up by adding new features.

It dosen't has Rating & Reviews of vbArticles but it has some features of vbNews. As i wrote before, depending on its popularity or not, I'll upgrade it by adding new features.

No, you'll not get any error if you've vbArticles and/or vbNews installed in your site. It uses different tables.

I wrote it before. Depending on its popularity or not, should be upgrades or not. RSS and many, many other features can be easily add.

I think it have some issues with MGC shoutbox. I installed vbjournal and after 4-5 hourz i observed that my MGC Chatbox is now vanished from forumhome. I installed it again and now it's workin fine...

My congratulations. Very nice interface in your site. There are some changes that you need to make at templates:

you'll find them easily.

Maybe I'll spend some time to check for this feature. But in person I don't like it in any program. It's like spying the others where they're and what they're doing. But this is just my personal view.

IE 6.0 produces the error (but it doesn't stop an article being submitted)

There is NO such error when using Firefox. However, the text in the categories box list is not aligned correctly when using Firefox.

Also, I noticed a spelling error (Successfull - Successful) within the product file.

You must activate inline images at vBulletin options.
Please note that the permissions are: Add/Edit/Delete and not only Add. So its normal to get the Admin menu at the bottom of their articles.

Seems that something is going wrong in your site. If you see the attachment (its from my demo installation) image button appears normally. I tried it as admin and as normal user.

If you want to modify the date format you need to modify the variable $mydateformat at vbjournal.php file. If you want to change anything else, the templates are:

Do you mean the preview button in Editor? Sorry, but nobody can be happy. Having that editor I was getting complains because I didn't use vB editor which is compatible with all browsers etc.

Why a user can't edit his articles??? He can do it in 2 ways:

In full article view by choosing Edit at the bottom of article

Ok, I managed to make the change I wanted by changing the phrase name="vbjournal_at" to say 'on' rather than 'at' in the product xml.

I still have the problem that a Registered Member cannot edit their own articles. I have the permissions set correctly in the Usergroup Manager, but when the Edit button is clicked it says "You don't have permission to......".

Mary, on your working demos, does the vbulletin editor have a preview button? Because mine doesn't. I'm also baffled by the fact the editor works perfectly but there is no img button. It appears on the vbulletin editor within the rest of the forum!

I overcame my bizarre problem with the insert image icon by editing my editor_toolbar_on template.

Still having problems with the permissions though. On my set up, a member cannot edit their own articles even though the permission is set in the usergroup. However if I select 'Can Moderate' then they can edit their own articles (and everyone elses though, which is not what I want!)

Any ideas how I can fix this?

It's not about permissions. Check your php.ini to see if GD2 is installed. Is the image library that comes with PHP but many providers don't installed it as it's not including in the default PHP installation.

ImageMagick is very nice tool, I also have it in my server, but the common image library is GD2 which comes with PHP. Actually, unlike versions 1.x, GD2 is equivalent to ImageMagick in quality.

So, yes you need GD2 to work with it.

MicroHellas, thanks for your reply. I am fully aware that vbNews and vbArticles are commercial add-ons. Actually I am evaluating a good articles management system for my Urdu forum (http://www.urduweb.org/mehfil). I really like the way vbNews present lead articles, feature articles and links to different categories. Ideally I would have liked the article system to pull its content from designated forum posts, i.e. any post marked as news. Also I would like to put more control in the hands of the moderators, i.e. I would like moderators with the right permissions to decide which news goes into the lead position and which becomes a feature articles. I am not under any pressure to finish it soon. That is why I am first doing research on article management add-ons for vBulletin.

I m having admin permission on my board but still i can't delete a user's posted article from vbjournal on my site.

I have checked my usergroup permissions and all of them are on yes. still can't delete a user's article. Some users posting same article in different sections.

Please help me out of this. And when you are planning to upgarde this wonderful hack.

I can't delte articles from vbjournal when already am havin all the permissions on YES.

If u delete ur own article jorunal won't confirm it. Last nite i incidently clicked on delete instead edit. And the article is gone.....

There is no way to find new articles posted on journal. U can't make every jorunal as breaking news, editor choise or important. There shuld b a function or feature from where a user can have the list of new articles since his last visit.


I m not sayin that vbjournal is not worth anything. This is a wonderful hack to have. And i can see my users posting new articles everyday. And it's really great thing if u want enhance ur search engine rankings.

But plzzz release the new version soon, atleast with basic features. i m not askin for features u have planned for later versions.

Can you see as Admin "Delete" at the bottom of the article in full article view?

For (1): Do you mean changes like: Breaking Articles to change to eg Unbreaking Articles?:D. Sure. You just need to change the phrases.

For (2): Do you mean something like vBadvanced? Sorry not. vbJournal is not a CMPS module. Of course if you're good in modifying templates you can do miracles.

Yes you can, by adding a new usergroup eg Editors, add the members to this usergroup and give "Adding" permissions only to this usergroup

Yes, you can. Just keep in mind that the description is limited to 255 characters.

From what I can see it looks as if all the basics are already there and working at this point, the only additions needed would be VBSEO and the ability for users to rate articles.

As it's for our business $50 is irrrelevant essentially so I'm more than happy to pay for vbarticles, but I don't want to get something which isn't as good as something your about to make here for free.

You don't loose anything by upgrading to vbSeo version as nobody lost anything by upgrading vbNews.

Actually you didn't missed something other than the fact that vbArticles is already ready (except vbSeo) and it has a powerful HTML editor. This is something that other members love while others hate. You can do many things more with that editor, things that you can't do it with vB editor (eg tables, adding and configure unlimied photos, audio, video inside the article body etc).

I see and VB Journal would not allow you to add tables ? If that's the case it makes my decision much easier as many of our articles include workouts and we need tables to support that, we also often need to include photos so it would seem vbarticles is the way forward for us.

To majorvbuser, I am using custom bb codes available from these forums which allow me to insert video clips and youtube movies into the body of the articles using vbjournal. Plus, of course you can use your normal [img] tags to insert as many photos into the body of the article as you like.

Thanks for the heads up but it's more the issue of being able to add avanced html such as tables etc which would be absolutely critical to us. A lot of our content is fitness based and therefore require a lot of flexibility in tables etc but thanks for info.

When I click on add new article I got alarg box consist of:

Category:
details,
title
description (max 255 char)
and box under it to write the description.

Then "fullarticle " without a box to write it on.

Actually I thought that the problem comes when I translate the XML file,
so I rewrite it again and I used a new xml file from your last upgrade.

In any case I've noticed that except the traditional Arabic right to left, you've the scroll bar moved to left too, something I didn't seen in other Arabic sites. Are you using any special template or code? Maybe this causes the problem.

Maria, can I make some grammatical/spelling suggestions?

Phrase vbjournal_at should be "on" rather than "at"
Phrase vbjournal_action_ok should be "Successful Action" rather than "Successfull Action"
Phrase vbjournal_no_permissions should be "You don't have permission for this action!" rather than "You dont have permissions for this action!"

Also vbjournal_author_articles should be "All Membersname's Articles" rather than "Membername's All Articles"

No, no... Don't worry. I know that my English are average, but I'm proud for myself as I learned them alone. Self teached on the same way as I learned programming. I don't use any special template or code to do this change in the scroll bar, also the scroll bar on the left 5 years agoo without any problem on any hack or code or script or product!

I'll give the guests permition to visit and add an article for 24 hours wish you can give us a visit during those hours. :)

Is it a good solution?
I installed an extra Message Editor Interface and my users are happy with it!

The good resolve for this problem is to create a new group for editors and let them use the standard edit box.


Something is going wrong with your configuration. That's why you're the only one who has problem with it. Do you have any other site to test it there?
As I mention on my last post, the Admin on my board can't find the article message box but the guest can do when I give him a permission to add a new article!

So the problem as efc9 said comes from the extra editor tools.

Login to your admincp. Goto Language&Phrases .. Choose the group vbJournal. There you can see and edit all the phrases.

VBSeo - not yet but it's on Maria's to do list in later versions
Comments - not yet but again on Maria;'s to do list in later vesions.

BTW that functionality is all available on her vbnews product which is available now, about $50 or so.

To prevent your users to delete them is something that I can understand (even if nobody has the right to keep an article when the author don't wants anymore to have it in public). But about editing? You know how many times all of us we're doing even typographical errors. Why not to allow him/her to correct them?

there you can edit the name of category and the image shown at vBJournal frontpage.

This error is not coming for vbJournal. If you check the error vbJournal has got already a value. Seems that a mod that you tried to install in the past was wrong. Can you remember something like "mgc"?

Yes and No. You can rename it, but you must make a global search and replace of vbjournal.php in files:

vbjournal.php
product-vbjournal.xmlPlease be carefull to avoid searching and replacing just for vbjournal as on this way you'll rename directory's name too and you'll be in troubles.

No. But as vbJournal is using vB's editor there are plugins here so you can insert them.

No, that's not normal. Thumb must be created automatically. Are you sure that you've cmod 777 /thumbs directory inside /vbjournal/photos ?

The thumbs directory is definitely cmod 777, I'm going to upload a test article and see if it still does it.

Reading through 14 pages on this hack, I did not see:
1/ If this mod compatible with 3.6.8
2/ How are you going to make the Journal page as your default index page?

Just installed! Works great...finally found what I was looking for! I have 1 question.

I removed most of the boxes from the front page and therefor the features selection on the add new article page are not usefull for me. (photo article, breaking article, important article and editor's choice) Is there any place were I can remove those options? thanks!!

Maybe it would be possible to automatically create a new thread in specific, when an article s posted, and a comment button, which leads to the thread, in the article.

I got the same problem because I'm using a none official editor!
So, I uninstalled the mod! :( I really liked it but what can I do with no editor box!:confused:

I figured thats what is was, I'm GTSmiliebox - Move Smilies Below Editor, when I disable that mod the journal editor apperas. Its is probably an easy fix but the coder would have to give instruction.

how do i increase the description size from 255 characters??? i was looking at the table inserts.. and considered changing the varchar(255) to something else, but i dont think that would be a good idea
