Hello friends, i am currently hosting with bluehost and I am looking for a new hosting company, I was checking out HostGator, looks pretty good, anyone got any preferences, I currently have a small board with 132 members...
I read a lot of the threads here but couldn't seem to find a host that most people agreed on...
thanks for any help... Mike.

Check the services and Uptime guarantee offered by hosting company and also find reviews of the hosting company before signing up. Hope you find the best:)

HostGator is great.
They are very strict on account suspensions (due to nonpayment) They will outright refuse even a backup of data and will make you pay for time you were offline (My site was off for like 5 months, so I had to pay just under $50 for the time I didn't use/have access my files)
On the flip side, their support is good. I was running on some money issues and wasn't getting paid for a few more days after my payment due date. I asked for an extension and they gave it to me without any problems. The one thing I don't like about HostGator is that unless you override the error pages setting with .htaccess, if someone gets a 404 error on your site, they'll get one that looks like HostGator's layout, etc with a "Page cannot be displayed thing" So it's like.. free advertising.
I'd give the thumbs up to try them out

I have 4 sites on their shared servers and have had no major problems with them. Support issues a couple of years ago seemed to be really bad but have noticed a big improvement in the last two years. Their community support forum (which they use vbulletin) has also changed as they have staff now assigned to the forums. Online support help is always fast, longest i have had to wait for an operator is 1 minute.

I have 6 sites with hostgator and two of them being forums. Ive been with them for over a year and a half and never really experienced any problems with them. Support is fast although sometimes they have no clue what they are talking about depending on who you get. They offer good plans for reasonable prices. If you go with them dont choose the smallest package because your site will be slow. Go with the 9.99 plan or up and you will not regret it.

I have a dedicated server through Host Gator. They are some good guys and I have never had any problems. There support is awesome! I tried out IX Web Hosting and they suck well if you have a large site they aren't very good.
Hostgator? They suck. They take down my website without noticed and i contacted both sales and support 1 hour ago, no responce. Their support is crap.

I have a LOT of domains with Host Gator and I really like them! I have three hosting accounts with about 100-domains but out of those 100-domains only perhaps 2-dozen of the domains are significant sites.

I had a Dedicated server with them. My forums had over 5000 registered users. I had no issues with them. Support was fantastic!
Missed payment? :o
Nope, apparently it was a.. 'bug' in the system.

It's highly possible as it is an automated program using computers, which do have bugs.

They said to me it was an audit that turned off alot of websites. Last time it was because my website has hacking material, auhm, since when is cheating in games illegal? And before that, i asked them to enable wildcard domains (nerds should know that one), and they managed to somehow block all access to my website except the FPT. The one before the downtime yesterday was because i asked them to take a SQL backup for me, so they deleted my database and dropped a copy in my ftp. Like wtf? They are just plain stupid. And i'm sick of having to wait 3 hours just to get a responce, and the live "support" chat isnt support at all. Its a "Please submit an email to us"

HostGator is great, until your website starts getting popular and you actually start to use what you have been provided in your highly-oversold plan.

But your forums arn't large.

I used HG for over a year and had 3 forums there. It was a fun ride but then I outgrew them and upgraded to a VPS. Sold the forums sometime ago but sticked with PowerVPS as the services were far-far better.
If you can afford it, I'd recommend PowerVPS. Otherwise, Hostgator is great.

Ok I tried to open an account with hostgator, I uploaded the files, transferred my domain name and they said my post code was incorrect and disabled my account, now my account is offline, I need to "prove" to them that I am who I say I am even though they received payment... this is bad, I am being treated like a criminal, they should have left my account open and asked for proof, not just turn my website off... this is really bad form... Mike.
So now I am looking for another hosting company... and my website is currently down...
any ideas?

Hostgator is acting 200% within there rights here. When you signup online you must provide your info EXACTELY AS IT APPAERS ON YOUR CREDIT CARD hostgator thinks your order is fraudelent and asks for more evidence it is not that they received a payment for the account is not enough evidence you are actually who you say you are ... hostgator probably wants a scanned passport / driver licence or other official identification proof again this is completely normal to ask they did nothing wrong

They should have left my account active and asked me for it, instead of just turning off my account and my website is down, they got their money so why no just ask for verification, to turn off the website without notification first is just bad manners and bad business practice...

No they are correct they had the money for the account but accounts that are suspected for fraud usually get chargebacks which would cost them money ... what is difficould about entering you "correct information" ?

What is difficult is the US server didn't recognise my UK postcode and flagged it as wrong...

well if you think it's hostgators fault (a bug in there anti fraud checks) then you should get in touch with them.Do not yell or be angry at them just explain you enterd the information correctly along with some info to proove that and they might give you a "gift" i'm not working for hostgator so can't say for sure...
I have had Hostgator hosting for over a year and the only reason i left them is i went dedicated they do offer dedicated plans to but they are a ThePlanet reseller when it comes to dedicated and i hate ThePlanet

mate, hostgator are great for small sites. You cannot run a successful forum with them, if u have more than 600 people online at once they shut you down so HG sucks for big forums
Mr. Mooney
09-25-2007, 08:44 PM
I think if you have 600 people on at once you have a more than sucessful forum and need a dedicated server ( a big dedicated server).

HG does not suck for big forums... they have dedicated servers if you have 600 online people at the same time...
people always complaining because they are shut down with their small "mostly free" account... people want everything free... the internet is a business, not a friend.
if you have members, you have to face the use of a bigger server, HG or not.. all providers will shut you down if you go above their accounts limits... no matter what they advertise.
