Just curious if anyone else here is running any background music on their forum. If so, how did you go about it. Suggestions welcome, thanks.

I have a streaming Mp3 playerthat I use when i need It.

I can set it to auto-play a message as well.

I would recommend against putting background music. I know that I'd immediately close the page if I heard background music, it's a deterrent for me.

Any page that forces background music on me is instantly closed and never visited again, it's one of the most annoying things you can ever do on a site.

I hate it on MySpace, when you visit someone's page (headphones on), then suddenly their punk music will blast on and startle you. Gah. Not that I'm a frequenter of MySpace.

I have it in my profile page, but that's it...not forum-wide, that's just irritating.

I agree with Jubei, plus I think MySpace is crap.

Make it right click to switch off but disable that too with one of those cute pop-up warnings.

Ditto. If I'm already listening to music while surfing it just makes for a lot of noise with the two songs combined. And if I'm not listening to anything, it's annoying to suddenly have music coming from somewhere. I have to figure out which tab is the offending one, since I often have many different tabs open at once, and close it down.

Feckie, where can I download the MP3 player like you use. I think letting users select to listen is the only option I will choose. This way, people who don't like music on the forum don't have to listen to it.

I have to say that the autoplay is the biggest turn-off for my members so I added the vb Radio Staions Mod and it is a HUGE hit with my members!:)

I guess it depends if you like the music or not. If I hear something I don't like, I just hit mute. I'm guessing if you have a music related forum or a forum devoted to a particular theme, it's going to be a draw, not a deterent. It just depends on your audience.

Never, ever put background music on a site. At the very least, make the option to start, not to stop the music. It should be off by default. I for one find such sites which have it unprofessional and rather tacky, and generally never return to them again.
