First, I will say that my board has a very high posts to members ratio, with the amount of posts being about 283 posts per member mathematically calculated. Of course, most of this comes from the top 10-15 members who have HUGE (for site size) posts counts of 1-2000 plus (total posts just over 30 000).
Now, the forum I don't think is too big. Member Count is 106. Post count about 30 000 and Topic Count unknown. Generally, it can sometimes get past 200 posts per day, and it's only been around since January.
However, recently my site was suspended for server resources. I found out that one major problem was the inactive users e-mail reminder, which had flooded my inbox with 100s of confirmation e-mails and who knows how many other e-mails to members as well as causing many to return. I disabled it and not needed minor modifications.
Now, the current modifications are the vB Shout shoutbox, vB Credits, IShop, IBank, IBPro Arcade and VS Interactive Profiles. Probably more, but not much more. Being as it's a very informal site, there are large amounts of styles, smilies, post icons, avatars and BB code.
Now, it's sometimes been using high resources, and sometimes hardly anything, and without any real difference in use of any mods. It was placed on a Temporary Server.
But just now, the site went down again for like the 10th time since being on a temporary server, and it turns out that because of the amount of MYSQL processes and the like across all accounts on the server, the MYSQL server is also unreachable, causing the forum, when actually reached to result in a database error.
There are no problems I don't think with exploitable scripts, I removed an old Coppermine gallery (have integrated gallery) and most home made scripts I made as tests of PHP learning.
The problem now is that the site is unreachable. Many members, all of them active unable to read and post on a board they visit constantly, daily etc for various purposes.
Because of all this, I am considering either using VPS or finding a better host. There are no technical problems with this part, because I do have full database backups and content backups offline, as well as copies of installed modifications, the original vBulletin file download and everything else. It would just be a case of shutting the current account and opening a new account.
Either way, here are some basic pieces of information about the site:
Has a forum with those mods, and also a major content site with information about a lot of stuff.
The content site pages use PHP includes for navigation.
The content site has various images (in gallery), PPT and Word documents as well as full video files of anything I discovered in a game.
Pages are micro optimised to be less than 10KB.
Is affiliated with like 20 sites, some of which with huge traffic and forums with thousands of members.
Current host is Lunarpages. Don't ask, most hosts are US only, and I am NOT from the US. Really annoying that I had such a problem.
Database is about 28MB
Shop items DO NOT display in postbit. Nor does mood, or arcade information.
Most server heavy features disabled. Now, before anyone goes around suggesting stuff like disabling the shoutbox or arcade, there would probably be mutiny if that happened.
I have e-mailed support (AGAIN!) with this issue.
In case it helps, I downloaded another database backup and will download a whole home directory one as well.
So, I need to know which of these to do:
Upgrade on same host
Move to different host
Move to higher plan on different host (VPS or Dedicated)
?
Pretend nothing happened and use the site as usual.
I am seeing if disabling search for guests will help. I would like to not show shoutbox for guests, and I am probably going to release a modification for it seeing how the permissions don't seem to be settable otherwise.
