A big thanks to everyone who nominated or voted this for MOTM September 2007!
e-steki User ModLog
What is this about?
This modification shows the user a table in his UserCP with the latest moderator actions that are performed in his posts/threads.
1. Why this and not Moderation Auto-PM (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=115677)?
Its not intruding for the user. In fact, I decided to make this because the Moderation Auto-PMs I was receiving by tons were too annoying to bare.
Its not in the Modification Graveyard, so there is a much higher chance of updates and support ;-P
It allows more types of actions to show (unfortunately exept hard deletes).
Its more visually appealing ;-)
Users have to make more clicks to discuss an issue with the moderator, which makes it a little harder for them to protest ;-)
Most forums have some "moderation routines" that involve many moderator actions. Especially in this case MAP can be REALLY annoying.
You can select to hide the Moderator column, so no hatred will begin after the action as the user will not know who performed it.2. FeaturesAdmin Features
Absolutely NO template modifications and you even get to control where the table will be placed in the UserCP with a simple setting!
Ability to hide who the moderator that performed the action was.
Fully phrased.
Your moderators will not see their own actions, but the actions performed by other moderators on their posts/threads (customizable).
You get to control which action types will be shown and how many of them.
Ability to set a cutoff limit, so that actions that are performed before X days will not show.
Ability to specify which mod/admin usergroups' actions will display.
Displays actions from the moment you install it, even old ones, it doesn't display only the actions that are performed afterwards.
Supports e-steki Featured threads (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=155299).
A nice, usable and extensive manual instead of an ugly readme.txt ;-)End user Features
Easy spotting of the action type by the nice colorful small icons (provided by famfamfam.com (http://www.famfamfam.com/). Thanks!)
Actions that were performed after the user's last visit will display in bold. Of course, they are sorted according to the date and time they were performed.
There is a link to the thread that the action is about. If the action is about a post, then the link takes the user to that specific post. There is also a link for the forum that contains that thread, in case the user does not remember what it is.
The table is collapsible, and if it has nothing to display it doesn't show, just like the other tables in the UserCP.
The username of the Moderator (if the admin has selected him to show) is formatted according to usergroup and links to his profile (so the member can send him a pm to talk about it, if he wishes to do so)
Full date and time displayed.Don't forget to Mark as Installed!
Support will be provided only for a few days after each release.
Thanks a lot to famfamfam.com for the icons and to SirAdrian for his answers to my questions.
As the admincp screenshot was resized by those stupid attachment limits that Paul M refuses to change, here is the original one:

Looks interesting. I'll keep an eye on this for my new site.
Got it installed w/o any problems. I adjusted the settings in vboptions, went an moderated one of my own topics, checked the usercp but didn't see a listing of any sort. I did turn on that option in the main options. Also, checked to see if the hook was present and it was.
I check over things once more to be sure I did everything right.
Edit: Posted a new thread, close, stuck, soft deleted and nothing new in the usercp?

Have you got the setting "Show actions that the same user has performed?" to Yes? (default is no)
Otherwise your own actions will not show.
What moderation action did you perform?
Have you got the setting "Show actions that the same user has performed?" to Yes? (default is no)

What moderation action did you perform?
Yes, and I closed, pinned, soft deleted and finally hard deleted. Also, I have all those action id's put in the settings as well.

You are not supposed to put them there!
You put there only the ones you DON'T want to show! (I would be a sadist if the setting was the opposite way :p)

I test Action #15 - "Thread removed", which is not listed in the "
Actions you do NOT want the user to be notified of" in the control panel, and it worked. So I don't think adding #18 fixes this.
make sure u add the mod id in the settings of the hack
No, you don't add anything. You only put in what actions you DON'T want to show. Same mistake I made.
BTW: Nominated for MOTM.

BTW: Nominated for MOTM.
Thank you so much!!!! :D
@Junkie: unfortunately it doesn't display hard deletes, only soft deletes, as I mentioned in the first post and the manual. This is caused due vBulletin's way of updating the moderator log (my hack fetches the actions from the moderator log filtered by the userid of the thread/post poster). This might be fixed in a future version, if I think of a way to do it.

thanks...
They are in the manual, in a pretty table :p
Note what JD45 said though, you should put there only the ones that you want to prevent from showing.
Perhaps in a future version I can make this setting more user friendly.

Probably. Tell me where you want it to appear and I'll tell you the template edit for it. Also ensure you are running vB 3.6.8.
looks great, but I receive an mySQL Error when accessing the UserCP!
This is a rather difficult issue. The product may be only adding one query, but that query is a rather heavy one. Your server either doesn't support such a large query, or you have a too large forum, so the limit is logical. I'm working on it, perhaps I'll make the product add 2 queries instead of one but much lighter ones. Keep your eyes open for an update (probably it will be released soon), and for the time being, disable the product.

Version 1.1
----------------
Added option for specifying a days limit for the display of actions.
You are strongly advised to upgrade, as this option makes the query much lighter for the server.
winduff try this version, and set the day limit to a relatively low number (equal or less to 30). Tell me if your problem was solved.

Lea,
this is a really good hack...thank you for your work...:)
The only thing I can tell you is that the "edit post" action (#20) is not working for me.
I have emptied the relevant field in the options in order to log EVERY action. ;)
Have you tested all the actions?
Thanks again...hack of the month for me...;)
Lea Verou
08-12-2007, 06:50 PM
I discovered a bug with action #20, about an hour ago. It notifies the thread starter instead of the post poster.
Unfortunately, this means that I'll have to rewrite a great portion of the code, due to vB's crappy moderator logging on post edits  (In fact I reported that as a bug to vbulletin.com, it does not store the postid in the moderatorlog on post edit).
I thought I had got over that bug in my code, but it seems I've missed something.
So, I'm currently rewritting the queries in order to overcome that problem.
Support will be temporarily not provided, so that I can focus on fixing the problem.
You'll have to wait a little bit.
I expect to release a fixed version later today or tomorrow at most.
Sorry and thanks for your patience and kind words :)
PS: Of course all the other actions are working fine, the problem is with post edits (action 20)

How does a user start a conversation with the staff member who moderated his/her post?
NFLfbJunkie
08-12-2007, 09:46 PM
After installing is there supposed to be a link to show the actions from within the USERCP, or do actions only show when they have been made? I don't see a link anywhere in my USERCP.
Lea Verou
08-12-2007, 10:00 PM
@COBRAws:
There is nothing else in the hack that can be displayed in a screenshot.
As for the conversation, he can go to his/her profile (if the moderator column is selected to be displayed) and start a PM one, the old fashioned way. :p
@Junkie:The table shows only if there are any actions for it to show, and it shows in the usercp home. Ensure there is something for it to show.

Hey Michelle,
cheers for updating so fast. Unfortunatly, I still get the same error. I guess my server doesn't support such a large query - I even set it down to 5 days max, no positive results...
I'll wait and see, maybe you'll come up with something :)
Cheers

Version 1.1.1
------------------
Fixed the action 20 (edit post) bug
Also the manual now contains instructions for manual addition of the template hooks if you don't have them and a simple tutorial for changing the icons associated with each action type.
@Wulfnoth: The template edits that you requested are now included in the manual ;)
@winduff: Try this one, now the queries are two (one if you exclude action 20 from showing) but much lighter ones. If it doesn't work, answer the following (if its private info for you, answer in a pm):
1. How big is your forum? (users, posts, threads)
2. Are you on a shared server?
3. If you know how to navigate through phpmyadmin, how large is the moderatorlog table and the deletionlog table?

Thank you winduff :)
I'm glad it finally works for you. :)
A note to non-coders: Don't pay so much attention to the number of queries that a hack adds, but rather the type of them. I tried so hard to make this add only one query initially, and it turned out to be such a heavy one that it couldn't even be executed in winduff's installation! Now that there are 2 queries (if you want to display post edits, otherwise its still one) they are much lighter together than the previous one alone. ;)

Good job Lea...;)
While doing the tests I could "feel" the difference between this version and the old one...it's faster...you made a good job on the queries.
I would also suggest you to add an option: Show empty modlog table? (default: No)
I think this one deserves the nomination...;)

Wow, I didn't even realize how heavy the old version was until I updated to the new one. It cut my page load from 4.71432 seconds to 0.46639 seconds.
Lea Verou
08-13-2007, 05:06 PM
Yeah, version 1.0 was quite heavy.
This could be a lesson to some that the number of queries that a hack adds by itself doesn't always reflect how heavy the hack is. In this case, as was proven, 2 queries were far better than one. ;)

Firstly ensure that there is something to be shown. Eg make a moderator of yours perform an edit on one of your posts, or turn the option "Show self actions" to yes and perform a moderating action on your posts yourself.

Tell me one reason why someone would want to set that option to yes and I'll add it ;)
Thanks so much for the nomination!!! https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/
Because there are people like me who don't like dynamic sections on a page appearing. I like the structure of a page being always the same and the data to be dynamic, don't like a table appearing only when there's data...:)
It would also solve you lots of problems telling users of this hack that can't see the table to make sure there's data...if they enable the option to always display the table even with empty data and the table in usercp doesn't come up, the problem is in the template part, not the data collection part of the hack...useful for debugging...:)
I gave you 2 reasons...please provide us this other option...:)
Ciao!

Firstly ensure that there is something to be shown. Eg make a moderator of yours perform an edit on one of your posts, or turn the option "Show self actions" to yes and perform a moderating action on your posts yourself.
If none of this work, post a screenshot of your settings.
I dunno if it was because I was sleepy or what but it works as expected.
I was looking for it to appear as a menu option the left side as a selection and then a popup window.
Of course as I made more actions, it grew and I could see it plain as day.
Lesson: I shouldn't add mods and look at code when I'm sleepy.
Thanks this is AWESOME!

Its normal to be confused, as a 700x700 attachment limit doesn't allow much detail in the screenshots

question: I moderated a thread by closing the thread. I then moved the thread to a moderators only forum.
The mod actions then are no longer visible as you described. Is there a simple way to at least show up to the point that the thread was moved to the moderators forum, and that's where the trail ends? Or is that impossible?
This way users will see that the thread was moved, otherwise, once it is moved to a moderator forum there is no way for them to see that it got moved there anylonger.
Am I making sense or am I still sleepy?

HAHAHAHa.... me either
okay if I have a forum that is restricted to registered users, the thread is moved to the restricted forum, the log is emptied since the query no longer allows the member to see the log for the thread.
is it possible to allow it to see the moderation until the move point in the arrow?
the edits I made in the Authorized Personnel Only Forum. then moved it back, once i moved it back I could see all modlog.
I was wondering if it was possible to see just up to the arrow.

I'll try to think of a way, but not now, later.
For the time being, you can select not to apply forum permissions if you wish.
Hi,
nice Hack :D
Thx.
But one Question:
Why the TMS system (http://https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=152931) is used by Andreas so rarely or not by the Codern. It brings nevertheless only advantages with installing, since the Template changes is omitted
Sorry for Translation, its from Babelfish :D

Dunno, I prefer to write my own plugins for that in order to have more control over it, although from what I've seen I appreciate TMS a lot.
This hack does not require any manual template changes, so why are you asking this in this particular thread?
Hi,
Any Question:
I Edit a Thread from a Moderator, but he not become a Log of this Action.
To the TMS, which was one generally asks, which should not attack you . Separate it went around all Coder. You have also some Hacks, where one must change Templates, which degree is with updates vB depending upon number of installed Hacks much time-consuming.

I just don't have time to update the old ones.

Also, do these moderation actions appear normally in the moderator log (vBulletin's one) ?

Hi,
ok in German.

Hmm that's weird. If a mod becomes a user then he sees them normally again? If a user becomes a mod he stops seeing them?
If possible, try that with a test account and tell me what happened.
Hi,
so i installed the actually Version.
But the Same.
If a Posting or Thread from a Moderator, edit by Admin or Mod, the Moderator who write the Post/thread became no Log over this Action.
But new Problem,
i edit one of my Threads, but this Action are not displayed too.

Notice:
If for a usergroup, the "Show edited by note on edited messages?" setting is set to No, then the edits that this usergroup performs (given that its a moderator/admin usergroup) will not show in the User ModLog unless a reason is provided for the edit.
The reason that this behavior occurs is that vBulletin, in that case, does not store the edits in the editlog table unless they have a reason. My hack reads the post edits from the editlog table (because the moderatorlog table doesn't provide enough info in this case - which is a vB bug I reported and will be fixed in 3.6.9).
This is what caused MrD's problem.

This is indeed a great alternative to Mod Auto-PM and I like it much better, therefore installed!
I have a problem though, $template_hook[usercp_main_pos1] at the top of the template does nothing, but if I put $template_hook[usercp_main_pos6] at the very top it does.
No big problem as it does work this way... is there anything wrong with doing that?

What have you set for its position in the hack's settings? It chooses the template hook according to that setting.

Congrats on the MOTM nomination, I gave my 2cents hehe
aiight, sorry to bring this subject back to discussion, but it would be really great if there was a new column called "Discuss Action" or "Contact Moderator" or something like that so if the user has any problems or doubts about the moderation task, with one simple click they could send a PM with the general details at User Modlog table and the option to add some comment as in a textarea form.
How many votes do I need for this wish to become real? lol

Ι think that it already does inform users for hard deleted posts, if you provide a deletion reason.
Perhaps somebody else can confirm this.
PS: If you liked this mod, you can vote it for MOTM, although it will not win. The poll closes in a few hours. :)

Is there an alternative, more efficient way of doing this? I have had to disable the mod until a fix is found, and I would suggest that anyone with a big forum check their SQL performance when using this.
Ditto here... Same query.. Here's mine and I'm disabling this pronto. Took me a few hours to figure it out... but I'm seeing horrible locking issues!!!

I've been using this mod since 3.6 and all over 3.7 and 3.8....
I really wish to see it ported to 4.0
It's a great piece of work.

Anyone working on a 4.0 Port?

It doesn't work on 4.0, style, templates, hooks changed a lot from vB3 to 4.
Too bad as this mod is really great.

This has nothing to do with my hack. I don't use any mod_autopm() function nor do I include such a file.
