Hey Guys What are the exact steps to a skin installation

How do I install icons and buttons for a vbulletin skin after having already installed the xml file? Do I need to do a complete reinstall? What are the exact steps to a skin installation?

I need exact instructions on uploading of smilies. I think that If I find out exactly where to upload this stuff onto the server ( meaning which file path) then I can get allot of this done on my own.
