Avatar Gd/image Magick Quality

Hi. I am finding when i upload a avatar the image quality is poor. These images are perfect quality before uploaded but when i upload them, the quality is really poor. I no what the cause of this is, but how do i fix it. I need to set the image quality for GD and image magik. How and where do i set this?
