View Full Version : An Interesting Experiment

On my board, my members always give me a hard time for enforcing the rules, such as banning people. I figured it would be interesting (and humerous, but more to that later) if I was to give them power to ban a user at random, for the amount of days they enter (3 to 30). I called the game Banning Roulette.

I thought it would be interesting to see who would be hypocritical and actually try to use this power to ban somebody. Not only that, but they would be banning somebody for no reason other than their own silly amusements.

So they go to the script, and submit the number of days they wish to play. Upon submitting, they see:Haha!! Fooled You!! You just banned yourself for (X) days LOL!And it actually bans them, with a similar reason message.

Anyway, I found it pretty darn funny. I managed to get my other administrator, 3 moderators, and over 100 users (about 200 visit per day), so that's a really high amount.

Most of them are pretty upset now. :D

Anyone performed anything similar? and, let me know if you guys want me to post the script. ;)

Hahaha, that's awesome. I'd be interested. How did you prevent word spreading about what was really going to happen when they banned someone? Or are they just not that kind of community.

Haha that's great Adrian. I would think it would be funny... If you release it I will definately be giving it a go on my forum.

That's actually hilarious, and possibly a bit sadistic. But please, so release this script! Although I won't try it now, I would love to try it when I get more members. Shows how people are seriously corrupted by power.

lmao that is a great joke to play on them

I just had a great idea that you could do with the script. Have it ban them, for only (X) minutes. But have it say Haha!! Fooled You!! You just banned yourself for (X) days LOL!

Then when it unbans them, and it says a message "April Fools!"

That would be the best april fools hack ever lol

If you release this, it would be a great April Fools joke! I have a feeling it would be a pretty 'silent' day in our Lounge since I'll be all the Post Wh*res would ban each other for fun only to find themselves banned. :)

But once someone bans themselves, then the word gets out. Maybe have a setting for a self ban and something else?

Maybe turn registration off for the day. They would have to reregister in order to go 'tattle' to the others.

The possibilities are endless with what you could add to this. But the first user that falls for it will let everyone else know so it will be useless for a while until they forget about it.

Ok, turn registration off then enable the mod :D hehehehe
Ban themselves for 1 hour maybe?

How will they tell the others? They are banned and can't use PMs.

I actually have my site set so that when you first register, you are in a usergroup that cannot use PMs. Then, you get promoted to a regular usergroup after at least a day. So, if my users get banned, they can create a new account, but not PM anyone. And, I could make that usergroup so all posts get moderated also, so they couldn't post about it.

Yeah, I like the idea of this mod. :D

If I used it I'd fix it at 24hrs.

That would be funny for my old site.

They loved drama. Still do actually.

Aye, your office is about 1/4 mile from my house.

(I haven't heard that word since high school though. I'll retort in kind by pointing out that our property values are doing better than yours, hoho)

If you could change it to a different button each time you used it that would work maybe. It's like the [you] hack, once they figure it out, then "the thrill is gone" as BB used to say.

I did something similar this year for April Fools. An "Enter Admin Panel" link mysteriously appeared at the top of the forum, luring unsuspecting members inside. It looks and interacts just like any normal, functional vBulletin ACP, of course all the important functions are disabled, though. All the menus are collapsed by default, except for one which contains a bolded link "Prune all Posts/Threads" - and each time the User clicked this, they got written to a "Naughty List" that was put up the day after April Fools. :p

This would not work on my forum. As most users have others emails or IM info. But it sounds like a grand idea.
