View Full Version : Repeating Sticky's througout Many Sub-Forums, where Editing one Edits All - Help!

I'm setting up a classified ad forum, with lets say 50 sub-forums for various categories of items for sale.

I have 3 instructional Stickey's that I'd like to post at the top of each of those 50 sub-forums, which will walk people through posting, editing, and deleting their own ads.

Is there an easy way to do this? Idealy I would like to have only one copy of that information with links from the other 49 sub-forums to that same information. That way if I make any modifications to the information, it would be updated througout the 50 sub-forums.

Surely there is some provision for this. Can anybody out there help show me the way?

Thanks!
Jeff

An Announcement might be the easiest way. You can set them through the AdminCP.

Kirk,

Thanks again for your help!

My concern though is that my 3 pages contain about 1500 - 2000 characters all together. I'm assuming that an announcement will put the full text there and take up the whole page (with 2000 characters). Is that correct? With a sticky it's just a link there at the top of the page, and if someone needs the info they can click on it, and if not, it can be easily overlooked.

Am I understanding the announcement feature correctly? Is there a better way, which is less intrusive for those who don't need to view the 2000 characters of instructions?

Thanks!
Jeff

No, an Announcement is displayed much like a Sticky, only it's located above the rest of the forum. You can see an example here on vB.org: https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/forumdisplay.php?f=194

Kirk,

I see. That did appear a lot different than I imagined. That may work! So I can post multiple announcements (like the three I mentioned - to break up the lengthy text) and have the same 3 announcements posted to 50 different sub-forums?

I just want to make sure that I'm understanding correctly. If that is true, than that may be exactly what I'm looking for.

Thanks again!
Jeff

Correct. When you add an Announcement through the AdminCP, you're given an option of which forum you'd like the Announcement displayed in. If you tell it to display the Announcement in the Parent Forum (Forum A), then all of Forum A's Child Forums (Forum B, C, and D) will have the Announcement as well.

Cool. So then if I have multiple announcements on the same forums, will they be sorted by the time stamp of when I submited them, just as the stickey's are?

Correct.

No problem.

It looks like if I post more than 1 announcement on a single forum, the only one that shows up is the one that is most recent.

Am I doing something wrong, or can you only list one per forum?

Thanks.

You should be able to have more than 1 announcement showing.

vBulletin Options -> Forum Display Options (forumdisplay) -> Group Announcements: Set to No
